Custom Builder Jesse James takes on the role of a modern-day daredevil in “Jesse James Is A Dead Man,” a new, original weekly series on Spike TV premiering on Sunday, May 31 (10:00 – 11:00 PM, ET/PT). Each episode follows James as he readies himself for a different death-defying (motorcycle only?) challenge he has always wanted to face and beat. Preparing for the risky challenge can often be as dangerous as the challenge itself as he endures a battery of tests to prepare. With CGI effects, viewers get a taste of the enormity of the stunt, revealing the physiological stress James’ body will endure. “Our goal was to create a new and distinctive series for Jesse that is unlike anything else on television,” said Sharon Levy, senior vice president of original series for Spike TV. Throughout the season, full episodes will be available on Spike after their on-air debut, along with exclusive behind-the-scenes footage and outtakes. The site will also feature an exclusive free 3-D online racing game that allows viewers to race Jesse in environments that mirror the episodes.

jESSE jAMES was here in the old west days. No motorcyles back then. Get your shit right.
Don’t know why some of you get so wound up over this. I think we can all agree that Jesse did get the TV bike stuff started with his show. but did that turn our industry one way or the other. Not so sure it had that big of impact. I was going to rallys long before Jesse was famous and there was always bikers wearing black Harley T-Shirts so he didn’t start that. Motorcycle T-Shirts have been around long before him. And guy’s like Arlen Ness, dave perowitz , Donny Smith, Cyril Huze and many many more were building custom bikes long before Jesse so he did not start that either. Any one that has been around this business long enough knows that if Jesse is in or out of this industry really don’t matter in the long run, now that being said, i think you do have to give him credit for what he has acomplished in his life, he went from nothing to being famous and very wealthy and that is not easy. That takes brains and talent So for that i do give him a lot of credit. His shows have always been entertaining and I am sure this one will be too.
Little known story. One segment of the 1st Chopper Mania tv show was shot by Hugh King in Daytona during bike week. I was there. Jesse & Cyril were displaying side by side on beach street. At the time all Jesse’s bikes on his display were painted orange. King needed more bikes. He shot on film some of Cyril’s bikes. They appear discreetly a few seconds during Jesse’s show Chopper Mania 1. intermissions. Builders friendship. (hope that none are upset that i reveal this story). There are a lot of good builders famous or unknown, starving, just making a decent living or making a lot of money. For bikers it should not matter. They all contribute to the custom scene in one way or the other. Moneywise, some succeed a little bit or a lot more because they have the intelligence to diversify their motorcycle passion in areas where it may be easier to make money. That’s fine with me. I notice that in a different way, but somewhat the same, both went the digital. route. Cyril as an internet publisher,, 1esse as a tv producer, but still around motorcycles. It helps the industry. Better have them. .
THE FATHERS: Perewitz, Ness, Kennedy, James, Huze, Smith, Simms, Simpson and a few others. It turned bad when the OCC clowns arrived in our living rooms…

JJ is a positive influence and YOUNG people seem to like him, which is sooo important if motorcycles are to survive.
I see too many negative tossers feeling sorry for themselves, making shallow sad comments.
Some, just cannot make a positive comment.If they were told to only make positive comments 90% of their conversation and thoughts would be deleted.
Imagine living and breathing in such a Toxic existance,are they ever happy unless complaining or pulling someone elses positive comments to bits.

Regardless of your love for Bikes ( not to be confused with jap bikes) most of you have a different agenda than the average rider.
Then there are guys like myself and Bobberiz. Two rambling old F**ks that are probably tired of seeing packs of “Wild Hogs” around every corner.. “Wild Hogs” are good for your business , not mine.
They raise my insurance rate’s because they don’t know how to ride. Personally I would rather be on the road with a few RIDERS (jap or what not) instead of way to many Sunshine Actors.

Jesse doesn’t HAVE to DO anything! The way the man can work metal is enough for me to respect him. I look forward to the show because he sure seems to be cool under pressure…………….something I strive for publicly and privately! peace
Jesse’s new show will not be exclusively motorcycles. There will be bikes but also airplanes, hotrods, off-roading, etc. Jesse is a huge brand and yes his show will promote that brand and WC, just as his earlier shows have. It will sell more bikes, parts and yes tee shirts. It will be good for Jesse and good for WCC and we can all hope it will give the biz and the sport of motorcycling a little juice too.
Jesse may not be everybody’s cup of tea but he is a talent and a star. And this program will be damn good.
OCC guys may be doofuses but you cannot deny they gave the business a boost and brought new riders into the fold. How many stick around now, who knows.
You don’t have to like Jesse’s bikes or OCC’s bikes or their personalities to acknowledge what they have achieved. And I think his West Coast Choppers makes some really nice bikes.

I think a lot of people in the industry would agree with me when I say OCC fucked a lot of stuff up in our industry. It did not do anything good bike sales wise besides help sell a shitload of t-shirts and crap. I contribute a lot of issues in our industry to them.
Occ is the Archie Bunker of motorcylcle comedies, but that is “OK” if you realise that.!!!!!!!!

Jesse puts the REAL biker into the youth of today. The elders already know better and soon the youth will be the elders who know better and the new youth will have their “Jesse” of our industry long after we are all gone. The “biker” will never die, it may evolutionize and turn into different forms with new erotic styles of bikes, but bikers will always be here.
He isnt here to bring the “biker inside” out to everyone. His main targets ,I feel, is the youth of America. They are the ones who will oneday be building and oneday be riding bikes. I say Rock On Jesse, keep it up. Fuck the rest and let the nay sayers stay jealous.

i have known jesse since he was a teenager. he has always done things his way. i used to give him bent pipe so he could make his own headers for bike projects. he is a self made man from the time he was young. its called personal fortitude which many of us have and what makes a person who they are. all his success was earned, not given to him. he was a poor kid who dug his way from the gutter to be the person he is today. my hat is off to jesse and i wish him all the success in the world. congratulations old buddy.

All they did was sell T shirts and memorabilia. They didn’t put any butts on seats that wouldn’t have gotten there anyway, perhaps not counting the giveaway bikes. Their magic was bringing the WWF audience to normal motorcycle venues to wait in line for autographs on overpriced apparel.
Jesse is a very talented and driven individual. The OCC bunch- well, we just have to realize that it’s a comedy show with a bunch of folks who just happen to build one off bikes. Emphasis on comedy show.
That being said, Paul Sr. pulled himself outta the gutter also. He built a million dollar ironworking business and now also has a multi million dollar tee shirt, oops, er, um, bike business.
Man am I gonna get blasted for this but, whatever happened to “Live and let Live”? JJ is doin’ his thing, Paul Sr. is doin’ his thing, all of us are doin’ our thing. Live and let live, guys and gals. Right?

If what these guys do didn’t have an impact on “The Industry” no one would give a rosy rat’s ass what they did and “live & let live” would be cool.
HOWEVER, if what they do does have an effect, then it does have an impact.
On the one hand, they impact you builders who have to make a living selling to the public.
On the other they impact some on like me who has to put up with the general public who associate me with the moronics portrayed by some of these people (and you all know who they are).
Even worse ….. are antics which draws more morons into the sport.
Because, the general public starts to initiate policy to further squash an activity that has been central to my life for decades.
So, what icons “of the sport” or “of the industry” do in the public eye has direct bearing on all of us
in a bunch of non trivial ways.
The issue is how does what they (JJ, OCC, NEss…..etc.) do in the public eye effect us all.
It aint about friendship it’s about perception.

Early in my motorcycle career I was fortunate enough to have Arlen Ness share some insight with me …… his advice to me was …. “At the end of the day you are what the public perceives you to be.” I have kept those words of wisdom in the forefront of my pea sized brain for many years now. With that wisdom in mind I have always avoided the “raising hell, drinking until up punk on national TV persona” that seems to be what the TV Producers, as well as most Americans, want to believe about anyone who rides a motorcycle. I have turned down four (4) different offers to participate in TV programs now. I refused the offers primarily because I will not abuse my children verbally on TV, or at any other time for that matter, I don’t need to jump up and down, throw tools or threaten the first born of any employees, on national TV, to accomplish a bike build. I was therefore told I “could not be worked with” by the producers! OH WELL!
The bottom line is, in my humble opinion: “One must be true to themselves” and “At the end of the day you are what the public perceives you to be.”

Here is what I think is funny, people come on here and blast the posers for buying big over indulgent bikes and having this be a “fad” and they also blast the media and TV shows for giving builders a bad reputation.
The same people who blast the posers and media are also concerned about what the guys do on TV because it leaves a perception with the public and this could in turn hurt builders and/or shops sell their products/services.
In my opinion, these shows, good or bad, is what brought more of the general public and the posers into motorcycles and in turn their money. Yeah a lot of it was in merchandise but there was also a lot in ground up custom builds, customizing bikes, maintenance and parts.(And the demand was evident by all the new shops that opened and at least survived for a couple years.)
Let’s not kid ourselves; the average joe wrench head didn’t bring in extra money and flood the industry with money. They are the ones who fix it or build it themselves in their garage, living room, porch, etc and know everything about the bike from front to back.
These same people who are complaining about the posers and TV shows are also complaining now that they are not making any or as much money as they used to and that the industry is heading south real fast.
So what do these people complaining want? Do you want the “posers” to stick around and spend money as well as have TV shows help give publicity to the industry(any publicity is good publicity right)?
I also was given some good advice handed down to me by one Jeff Nicklus That I also took to heart, and will remember for the rest of my life,……… his advice to me was …. “At the end of the day you are what the public perceives you to be.”

Simply because we (the biker and builder community) dont’ necessaryly constitute a homogeneous group.

Bad publicity createes bad public perception that puts all sorts-a policy and financial pressure on those of us who don’t reap any benefit from that publicity. (insurance, laws, regstration…. etc.).

I’m so glad to see Jesse James on TV again. Builder-celebrities to so much to boost the popularity of all things motorcycle, and that can only benefit all of us “in the industry”. (Did you all know Jesse is also going to be on the next Celebrity Apprentice with the Donald?) The Discovery Channel did so much to boost the popularity of motorcycles, customs, and the talented builders who were on the show. Our industry took a big hit when all those shows- Biker Build Off, Corbin’s Ride on, Build or Bust, Monster Garage, yes even American Chopper and American Thunder were being aired around the clock.. Thanks to Spike, and any other network that wants to keep our industry in the eyes and the minds of the public. It can only help us all sell more of what we sell.
