DashLink™ Docking Console for Apple iPhone and iPod touch

It was to be expected. The digital world finds its place in our motorcycles, at least some of them. Evidently, members of the industry have noticed how many of us use an iPhone or iTouch, the difficulty we have to prevent them from flying out of our pockets, and how ridiculous we look when fishing deep inside our saddlebags to find it.

Giving & receiving calls, keeping an address book is a very small part of what attracts us to these digital devices. Multiple useful applications are the reason why they are so appealing. So, we want them handy. Hence this new dashes used to cradle your iPod or iTouch, charge it when you ride, and to keep all your applications, from music to GPS navigation front of your eyes.

Keeping a docking station next to you on your bike let you do all things you would do at home or at the office. First, the DashLink docking station includes  a smart charging system with self-sensing on/off circuit to detect when a device is present (No device, no power, no worries]. That means your GPS Navigation Application can be run with the screen lit while playing iTunes. Second, you can continue to use Blue-tooth earphones or get,,  when available a Wi-Fi connection (check my Blog on an iPhone, for example.) Third, you can volume up/down control through stock Harley-davidson handlebar controls (FLH/FLT only.)

The DashLink is a complete replacement fuel tank console with integrated docking station. It fits Harley-Davidson FLHT/FLTR & FLHR models (vinyl liners adapters available tp conform to several iPhone and iTouch generations.). Sportsters and Dyna consoles coming soon. Available in Chrome, Gloss Black or Carbon Fiber Finish. Online at Hells Foundry or call  866.999.HELL (4355)

looks awesome, saw the proto type this summer, was a hard secret to keep! , wait till all the apps come out..smartlink to the obd, guage package, imagine a clean fairing without 30 pounds of stereo and guages on it…all on your phone. very smart derek!!!

Is that a reflection or is there a recessed area around the fill that might channel any over fill splash directly into the electronic gadget docking connection and could that be a problem for a non-observant Geeker?

  3. 3 Derik Oct 28th, 2010 at 9:31 am

The recessed area under the iPhone is designed to drain liquid (water or fuel). The device (iPhone or iPod touch) should be dismounted while fueling. Dismounting turns the charge circuit off so there is no power present.

I was wondering how long this was going to take. This is going to lead to a lot of options for aftermarket customization. Just think about it, you could eventually remove your entire dash and replace it with a iPhone. in addition to music, you could have apps regarding fuel flow, consumption, shifting points, ABS activation, suspension settings and more.

    Redman,
    You’re getting it.

The only place a phone should be mounted on a motorcycle-in front of the front wheel and then ran over. I have avoided too many morons in cages talking on phones and now I am seeing IDIOT on motorcycles talking on phones GET OVER IT PEOPLE YOU AREN’T THAT DAMM IMPORTANT

  7. 7 Greg Turley Oct 28th, 2010 at 12:28 pm

    m. Switzer. Nobody asked you to talk on the phone while riding!

  8. 8 Steve Oct 28th, 2010 at 12:46 pm

I had a chance to demo this for a few weeks and I can’t live without it. Can’t wait to get one.

    Thanks Derik,

The guys from “fit ear” that make the earphones that are molded to your ear are also adding a bluetooth capability to their product, this would be a good handsfree listening system along with all the music/communication etc that the iphone offers.

Very impressive. As others have mentioned, the possible system and subsystem monitoring of the bike itself as an app. is an exciting possibility. From a custom build perspective, anything that can be cleaned up and minimized, such as gauges, is huge. I look forward to seeing more. Great work Derek.

NO shots at you Redman BUT here lets have a few laughs and get a quick reality check…..OK

Dont they have Goldwings and euro & jap hi end white trash vehiciles that do that ?????????Like that piece of shit, i drive on bmw’s??? and what next a calorie and carb counter app for the geezeer glide riders?? or a porno site site or strip club locator app with a viagra timer built into the app??

WTF its a motorcycle right??? not a couch in your den or lap dance chair at Loli Pops !!!!! do you really need all that shit when your carving thru some canyon or some back road??

1550tc. I found one use you should like for this iPhone console. An application for spell checking. It exists. Just go to the Apple iTunes Store Applications website. In the search window, just enter “check spelling” (if you can spell 2 words in a row)

  14. 14 Shawn Oct 28th, 2010 at 1:24 pm

I like it. The only issue I see is that it’s open to the weather. It would be nice if there was a waterproof dock for it. That way you could still use some of the functionality of the phone, but still know that if you get caught in the rain…. you won’t ruin your phone. (Living in the NW, you tend to think like this). 🙂

@1550tc…. Maybe you should be out riding your bike and not commenting on an internet blog if your such a non-tech badd ass. 🙂

  15. 15 Derik Oct 28th, 2010 at 1:50 pm

    @ Darin,
    Thanks.

    @Shawn,
There is currently no weatherproof dock for iPhone. We have explored cases to allow access to the screen, but are still working on a seal between the device and the 30 pin charge connector.
If you learn of or know of a case, please pass it along as it’s something we’re interested in.

    Derik,

Not only talking directly to ECM/ Power Commander stuff, but when removed the bike cannot start, no way around it, total security from casual theft. A “x to the nth” place alpha numeric number sequence generated by the end user and the device. Seems that you would also have to get involved with the Apple Developers program and the “Made for iPhone/iPod” aftermarket program. Which also means working with some type of proto / hardware manufacturer. Especially those connector folks like Griffin.

But, you probably are already doing that.

  17. 17 Derik Oct 28th, 2010 at 3:00 pm

    @ Laurence
We are Apple MFi (Made For iPhone | Made For iPod) program participants and this an MFi Approved Product Plan.
We are using Genuine Apple 30 pin connectors on a circuit board designed here.
Security and Power Tuning are two good examples of the integration we are working towards.

Remember guys you still have to be able to connect to a cell tower and have ATT service available. Then while your riding down that twisting two lane road you can try and focus on that 3.7″ screen sitting between your legs. but wait you dont have service if your in the mountains or out in the desert.
Maybe I should design a new dash that you could hook your book reader (ipad, nook, kindle)up to so you can Read your New Fucking Book while riding down the road at 70 Plus MPH !!!

    I agree with 1550tc………….

  20. 20 Redman Oct 29th, 2010 at 9:03 am

I think a lot of the cruiser guys are missing the point here. Don’t get me wrong, I love choppers, bobbers, and even old Indians. They need to be stripped of all the superfluous OEM crap. (who needs turn signals, right?) The possibilities here lean more towards performance machines on the track. I see this as more of a Ducati or Aprilia kind of modification.

  21. 21 1550tc Oct 29th, 2010 at 9:25 am

David its called a head up HUD display like on the f18’s ……… GM had that on the vette?? so did bmw i think??

In all honesty this is a very nice and well thought out product.

Shawn these hi tech gadgets just make life easier in my line of work so I can travel and ride lots………….Speaking of I phone and apps for it for you guys that travel lots and are on flights, tripcase is a must have app,

    http://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/tripcase/id309620151?mt=8

Cyril you should develop a Sturgis or a rally app so you can find guys Nicklaus LOL

  22. 22 Cyril Huze Oct 29th, 2010 at 9:34 am

1550tc. There are already several iPhone/iPad Applications to locate your friends via the device GPS, but only if they accept to be traced. During Daytona & Sturgis, I know exactly where they are. They text me or I text them.

  23. 23 Odlamn Oct 29th, 2010 at 12:36 pm

Now I have to watch out for motorcyclists looking at their gas tank?!!!? This is not HUD. Head Up Display appears in your wind screen. I prefer to not use one. This is more like head down & eyes off road. The road is where we die with this kind of product. This is technology out of place. No Zen here. This goes against “keep the rubber side down”.

Total distraction from the riding experience. If you need to be in touch for business or situations, then drive your car or stay at home / office.

Keep riding the beautiful thing it was meant to be. Simple pleasure.

Sorry to be a dud on this, but focus on what you’re doing…especially if it is at speed and in traffic. Just MHO. Enjoy.

    O.

    @ Odlamn
Zen, Really? Dont’ think the touring crowd adhere’s to the “Travel Lightly Through Life” philosophy.
    Kum-ba-ya
    Feng Shui
You can sit backwards and ride. So what. Stand up too.
Give the rider some credit for basic intelligence.
Looks like a cool phone charger. I like it.

  25. 25 Steve Oct 29th, 2010 at 2:34 pm

The entire time I was using this I wasn’t distracted by it. The only temptation to look was because it looked cool on my bike. Really just plug it in, start playing music and go. If I didn’t like a song I would just lower the volume using the stock controls on the bars hence keeping both hands in control of the bike and eyes on the road.

  26. 26 T Bone Oct 29th, 2010 at 4:42 pm

My shovels engine is the only music I need when riding.

  27. 27 Iron Horse Oct 29th, 2010 at 8:02 pm

    Right on T-Bone…….my sentiments exactly.

  28. 28 1550tc Nov 2nd, 2010 at 12:41 am

    Cyril

There are already several iPhone/iPad Applications to locate your friends via the device GPS, but only if they accept to be traced.

What is that the Elin Nordegren, the ex-wife of professional golfer Tiger Woods app??

  29. 29 Wiz Nov 2nd, 2010 at 5:34 am

Anybody remember Peter Fondue in the beginning of the movie “Easyrider” taking off his watch, looking at it, and THROWING it away? Kinda making a statement I’d say. I rest my case. Wiz

  30. 30 Steve Nov 2nd, 2010 at 3:05 pm

The sounds of the open road and the rubblings of my engine are why I have a Harley. On my 1300 mile ride to Sturgus having some rock’n tunes just adds to my ride. Don’t care about the time or even day. Just give me the open road , some tunes, and I’m free.
