I love Harley-Davidson dealers with a true custom department. UK based Shaw Harley-Davidson is one of them with a division called Shaw Speed & Custom producing road legal custom motorcycles evidently based on recent Harley factory chassis. Dealer Principal & Sales Director Steve Willis was very proud to show me this new creation, a 2009 XL 883L turned into a hardtail and featuring a pair of 21″ wheels, enough to make it look really custom. The fellow who commissioned it is a 28 year old ex sport bike rider who was ready to cross over to the Harley world but wanted something different that a grey beard would probably not ride…
Hardtailing the rear fender rails, adopting the 21″ skinny tire size in front & rear, picking up some cool accessories, powdercoating a few parts and air brushing some simple graphics and stripes is something that many can afford. Proof that you don’t need to spend a fortune in fabrication labor to turn a factory Harley Sportster into something very desirable for our youth. Can the HD-1 Harley department propose something like that?

That’s a nice clean bike. They must have lengthened the rear end to accept the 21″ wheel. I don’t know how this or any other custom bike can be street legal without mirrors or turning signals/lights. I thought Europe had more strict requirements than USA.Just wondering.
I like the look, but not the neon pinstriping.
If you look closely at the back end it has the stock swing arm and there are turn signals under the tail of the exhaust. I’m young, from the UK and mirrors are at your discretion. I think the fluorescent pin striking is nice touch and gives it more of a youth appeal. I generally ride sports bike but would definitely consider one of these as a second bike!!! Thumbs up!

Nice sporty though…. as for the comments about signals, mirrors, etc. who cares. Its a custom, you want legal buy a stock bike.
Turning lights are not a legal requirement in Texas

Eric, I only mentioned it because the article stated “road legal”, but Crag88 from UK says mrirrors are not required.

If he’s going from an ass-in-the-air sport bike to a hardtail, my guess is he won’t be putting a lot of miles on it, either.
Shaw Speed and Custom make some very, very nice bikes, which is why i’ve asked them to build me a Softail. Can’t wait.

Shot, Years ago my ‘ol lady ‘an me were ridin’ from Austin,Texas to Sturgis on a custom Shovelhead trike [we were gone a month, put on about 3,000 miles, went all over hell] through Kansas. Hand signaled and were pullin’ off the interstate when this Super-Trooper hit his lights. Said “We didn’t signal our turn!” I told him “We used our hand! Turn signals aren’t required in Texas!” He assholy replied ” YOU AIN’T IN TEXAS NOW BOY!!!” I knew there was no line of cummunication available ‘an took the ticket. Wiz

in mmy eyes ss&c have proved to the world that for under 10k you can ride a custom bike and get as many looks and awards as a £60k custom bike!

I don’t think I could ride a rigid w/ the seat from a 48. The 48 is hard enough on the spine as it is.
