Billy Lane To Start A Custom Motorcycle Project While Still Behind Bars

On August 14, 2009 Billy Lane was sentenced to 6 years in Prison regarding the vehicular homicide case in connection with a September 4, 2006 crash that left Gerald Morelock dead. Upon his release from prison (to happen sooner than 2015 because Billy will be credited 2 days per month against jail time for good behavior), he will be in probation for 3 years, will have his drivers license suspended for life (pending appeal), and will also have to undergo random drug and alcohol testing.

Billy is a talented builder and living around motorcycles is all his life. So, I was not surprised to learn that Billy, with jail direction approval, is starting a motorcycle project while still behind bars. Billy will have no issue sourcing the parts and material he needs via his connections in the custom motorcycle industry. More info about this build coming very soon.

For information, some Choppers Inc. parts are again for sale on eBay and Billy, with the help of his sister, intends to release new parts to be also sold on eBay while still doing time at the Avon Park Work Camp in Avon Park, Florida.

Bag the flaps on those pockets.

  2. 2 Danny Jan 17th, 2012 at 6:42 pm

No surprise. No better way to do time. It’s long, long, long.

  3. 3 Jose Jan 17th, 2012 at 6:45 pm

No driver license for the rest of his life! OMG. For a builder, a professional death sentence.

  4. 4 Shifter Jan 17th, 2012 at 6:46 pm

Building, beautiful. Behind bars, so sad.

  5. 5 rebel Jan 17th, 2012 at 6:53 pm

Justice isn’t blind, it’s random. He’s doin’ the time and will be fully supported in what ever he’s involved with. Go Billy !

  6. 6 colemanfu Jan 17th, 2012 at 9:16 pm

I feel sorry for the family of the dude he killed. Feed him beans – I bet he violates in the first 6 months.

  7. 7 18bravo Jan 17th, 2012 at 9:35 pm

It’s a shame we live in a country where “Billy will have no issue to find a sponsor and source the parts and material he needs via his connections in the custom motorcycle industry.”
Really? Can’t these sponsors find talented young builders who HAVEN’T killed someone? I understand it may be an easy way to get publicity, but one of the main lessons I’ve taught my kids is this:
The easy way is seldom the right way.

If I were to find out who they were they wouldn’t get a dime of my money. Ever.

  8. 8 Luis Jan 17th, 2012 at 9:47 pm

This wasn’t his 1st DUI. I hope it’s his last. Let’s not forget the victim. I wonder if his family took Billy to the cleaners in a wrongful death suit.

  9. 9 Septic the Sceptic Jan 18th, 2012 at 4:56 am

Billy will get out and you’ll all crowd around him, slapping his back and forcing beers onto him, and when he refuses, you’ll hit the blogosphere telling all and sundry what a douche he is for not drinking with you.

  10. 10 Brett Jan 18th, 2012 at 7:10 am

Billy is doing his time & then like all, as long as he has learned his lesson, deserves a 2nd chance.

As for the family of Gerald Morelock, they stood up for Billy in court & asked the judge to NOT give him jail time. I have no idea what money was exchanged in suits, but the Morelocks & Billy are on very good terms.

Doesn’t matter what anyone feels about his sentence, it was handed down from a judge & far more then an NFL player got for almost the same exact thing. Once he is out his debt to society has been paid & there is no reason he shouldn’t be able to make a living.

2 days a month off his sentence…that is 144 days or basically 1/2 a year, so he will be out after 5 1/2 years of a 6 year sentence. So he still has about 2 1/2 years to go.

As for his drinking, I was able to hang out in Sturgis with Billy in 2007 while his court hearings were still on going…..he was done drinking then. So we are talking he is going on 6 years sober now. When he gets out it will be around 9 years. I doubt he will have a problem staying away from the booze.

Indian Larry dead, Jesse James all over tabloids for cheating & Billy Lane in prison……maybe everyone & the Discovery channel should just stop building people up to be some Superstars…..the Chopper fad of the early 2000’s has ruined many lives including people who tried to buy bikes from builders…Mid-West Choppers & Big Bear Choppers……

Time to move on. If you don’t like Billy, fine. Don’t buy his shirts & parts.

  11. 11 Jeff Jan 18th, 2012 at 7:52 am

Right on Brett, I could no have said it better.

  12. 12 Tim Jan 18th, 2012 at 8:29 am

I agree with Brett, ran into Billy at Cincy during this deal and he stopped drinking. The Billy I seen had changed very remorseful. He called me later to talk and I could tell he was different. Which of us have not made a very, very stupid mistake and not had to pay the price?? I know It could have been me a 100 times, I just was lucky. I don’t drink today. I see the change in Billy’s life. For you all who want to criticize him you can, most the people who just want to complain about people are just those who either are jealous or envious. Those will do more harm then good. I stand with Billy and wish him nothing but the best. He has paid his price and has done it with more dignity and class then most free men. He has help teach inmates to weld and work on vehicles and shared his knowledge. I don’t think if positions were reversed I would have had that much class. To the ones who do not know him and bitch we all see what you are made of. Those of us who know Billy we know what he is made of and I am proud to call him friend.

  13. 13 Oldude Jan 18th, 2012 at 8:38 am

Gerald Morelock is still dead and dead is dead. I don’t feel any compassion for Billy. Met him at a rally in Mississippi and he was an ass!

  14. 14 bigalyts Jan 18th, 2012 at 8:43 am

Missed cyrill and all the Lovers & Haters on the b log! Was not able to access the Web! However Billy will be the Finest example of having good, talented and non-violent 1/2 Citixens in our Penal System! There is a great example using Billy lane. Watch what hjappens……he will have to Build the PRICK (Warden) a free Chopper!!!!!

  15. 15 chopmonster66 Jan 18th, 2012 at 9:02 am

Nicely said Brett and Tim , every man deserves a second chance, Bill stood up and faced what he had coming and is doing his time , and helping those in there to learn a new skill (welding and fabricating and hopefully help change their lives for the better also. and for all you nay sayers .their are very few people in this world that have not done something they are not proud of or broke the law in some form, Billy screwed up and is paying the price, and will have to live with his actions for the rest of his life, and that can not be easy to do.wish him all the best in the future .

ps .Cyril, do you know if we can donate some cool old stuff to his project ? i have a few things i think he would like.

  16. 16 Rob Jan 18th, 2012 at 10:52 am

More props on Brett and Tim’s words. Being a big-name builder didn’t put the drink in his hand, though. Some folks just go that way until they have a reason not to.

As far as being called a douche for not accepting beers (which made me laugh, don’t get me wrong), nobody really gives a rat’s bald behind if folks drink or. I’ve never found it to be a condition of friendship or company with anybody I’ve ridden with or hung out with.

  17. 17 John Green Jan 18th, 2012 at 11:51 am

Looking forward to Cyril telling us more about what the build is for and who the owner is going to be.
I have some information but don’t want to say something wrong.
Cyril tell the rest of the story please.

  18. 18 Jason Jan 18th, 2012 at 11:55 am

I bet a tribute bike to Morelock? Then auction with the proceeds to benefit his family? A charity cause? Alcohol education?

  19. 19 Kirk Perry Jan 18th, 2012 at 12:00 pm

Alcohol Education? Yeah, here’s some education. Alcohol is processed as poison by your liver.

Why hasn’t a solo-cannabis user caused accidents or killed people? We wonder.

  20. 20 peggy Jan 18th, 2012 at 12:15 pm

What a slap in the face if he does a tribute bike to Morelock. Billy is where he belongs, tell me, if you were in jail and you wanted to build a bike, would you be able to do it?? I think not

  21. 21 Brett Jan 18th, 2012 at 12:37 pm

Again Peggy…..say what you will, but the Morelock family is on good terms with William D. Lane. The bike is for the Run To The Wall for war Veterans. & it isn’t so much being in prison & the warden allowing him to do a tribute bike.

Billy Lane is in a WORK CAMP. That means the prisoners do work & Billy is also a teacher there to give prisoners skills. See there was a time people actually were taught a skill while in prison to give them a way to be a productive member of society when they got out so then there was some hope they wouldn’t be back in prison after 2 months of being released. Sorry, but we can’t just keep throwing people in prison for life. It doesn’t work.

Yes Billy is where he belongs & he even admits it. However, he will be getting out & deserves to move on as best he can. You have no idea what it’s like when he closes his eyes at night & thinks about the death he caused. So please save me your holier then thou attitude.

He made a huge mistake, owned up to it & is now paying for it. When the debt is paid, he deserves to becomes a productive member of society again. As I said, if you don’t like that, then ignore him & move on.

  22. 22 Jason Hallman Jan 18th, 2012 at 12:51 pm

Why all the vehemence still over a matter that is closed. It was closed in civil court as well as criminal court. Get over it. Billy is serving his sentence without complaint.

  23. 23 Kirk Perry Jan 18th, 2012 at 12:58 pm

“See there was a time people actually were taught a skill while in prison to give them a way to be a productive member of society when they got out so then there was some hope they wouldn’t be back in prison after 2 months of being released.” 🙂
    •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
Maybe back in the 30’s, when convicts made their own leather sole shoes.

All convicts walk out of prison slow-minded. Even the vic’s that have access to a weight-pile. They may be able to bench-press 300 lbs., but they have no endurance. So, in other-words, all convicts are released weak and dim. Been there, only for a lousy 3-1/2 yrs., but enough experience to know how the system works. You’re in a hole.

A real bad example, is that one successful bike builder from prison will influence other convicts to think they can get out of jail and build bikes, and then reality hits them hard when they hit the streets. Even a few coins in their open-hand seem like a strange oddity to see. Then what? They “hang around the ramps” of life until they meet up with the easy-money crowd and then what?….back to the slam. 🙂 Repeat till death.

You want to teach something in prisons? Try construction projects…. oops!… Union flap.

  24. 24 Englishman Jan 18th, 2012 at 1:00 pm

I support Billy 100% and look forward to the bike he produces. It’ll be interesting to see what he has up his sleeve.

I am always taken aback by the pure hate that always pours out when Billy is mentioned.

It’s very similar in tone to emails I get from irate cops because we give sub discounts to military and prisoners, but not law enforcement.

I often wonder what has happened in these people’s lives that make them so defensive.

  25. 25 Kirk Perry Jan 18th, 2012 at 1:23 pm

Let’s not leave out everybody else in prison that may not want to return. Here’s what we used as a “parole yourself vehicle”.
If you have family that hasn’t already dis-owned you, then ask them to help you find secured employment. Find out in advance who your parole officer is going to be. Yes, they already know, based on which city/state you select to be released to.
Have your future employer contact that parole officer and make sure a relationship is established. The employer will work with the parole agent to insure that you stay working, and that if you change jobs, you must give a two-week notice, and again (while on parole) the parole agent must make contact with your new future employer.
You need to present this “package” (with no loose ends? to your caseworker/parole board and know you’ve done the best you can.
But, never, ever, fool yourself into thinking that you’ll be paroled at your fist hearing. You almost always get a one-year (bullet) or 18-month set-off.
Work on your plan. Hand it to them on a platter.

  26. 26 Mark Pavlica Jan 18th, 2012 at 3:48 pm

Public service announcement, prisoners have been building bikes in prison long before Billy was born. I just sold a transmission to a customer that was starting that same type of program in Colorado last year so if any one thinks Billy is getting a special treatment because of his status get over it.

  27. 27 me Jan 18th, 2012 at 5:35 pm

Since this wasn’t his first DUI, he had his second chance and what did he do with it…he killed someone. Has any one asked Gerald Morelock what he thinks about this. Oh wait he’s dead.

  28. 28 Kirk Perry Jan 18th, 2012 at 5:36 pm

The last little gem, I’m obligated to impart is:
Once you leave the slam, and your neighborhood “novelty” status wears off, and before your tip-back to crimey habs (habits) be on the radar-lookout for the thin thread of extended help from someone. The first step-up. From there on in, there will always be a thin-thread of support to follow.

Note: It has nothing to do with you, and all to do with the theory of relativity and nothing to do with religion other than whatever God suits you individually. But it’s no theory, it’s a real thing and as close to miracle (the support thread thing) as you get to witness (repeatedly).

However, your mind must be in a receptive mode in order to “pick-up” on the thin thread. You need to dust off that lunch kit (or food service hair net) and have a solid work routine (ethic) established and THEN you get offered a step up.

Most important to you “striver’s”, the only way you’ll make it “happen”, is to gravitate to a position with your employer (by having a first in and last to leave attitude), where you can work at one job (competently), but be allowed to also work at another mini-career job on your off-hours. All which keep you occupied, upwardly mobile and out of trouble.
    I’m here to tell you. 🙂 You-Can-Do-iT!

  29. 29 DJ Jan 18th, 2012 at 5:39 pm

Wow! What a bunch of ass holes! You show me someone on here that, at some point or for a period of time, was not a drunk or stoned out of his mind and I will show someone who was never a biker. I often wonder how the hell I never killed someone or myself. I am thankful to be alive and have since sobered up.. But come on- lets drop the hypocritical act. Folks.. This life you love came from the hardest partying and fastest living possible, so if you Johny-Do-Rights want to black list Billy then go ahead, but don’t forget where this all came from.

  30. 30 zyon Jan 18th, 2012 at 5:55 pm

It doesn’t matter what the family thinks about Billy… the family did not press criminal charges against him: the State did. So, what the family wants, is a moot point.

Billy killed a man, was convicted of doing so and was sentenced to prison.

Why in the hell does he get to live the same life he lived while out on the streets? Put the man in a cell and let him think about his choices for 6 years. Don’;t give him space owned and funded by the State so he can run a motorcycle shop. Let him wait until he gets out to start his life again… the guy he killed never gets to start his life.

I wish Billy the best of luck. He lives with what he has done every day he wakes up.
I know I did a lot of stupid things that I learned from, I am glad to see he has something productive to do with his downtime. A great builder whatever BS he might catch.

  34. 34 Mikkala Jan 18th, 2012 at 7:23 pm

To all of the haters. Billy has made a mistake and is paying for it. He is human just like all of the haters are!! None of us are without flaws and faults, but he has to live with what he did everyday when he closes his eyes, what do you have to live with, all of the wrong you all did? When I met Billy it was shortly after this had happened and he was honest, upfront and told me everything and he was truely sorry for what he had done!!!! He is a wonderful man if you know him, not what the public thinks he is. Unless you know him personally, you can’t speak about him or what he stands for as a man!!

    Mikkala

  35. 35 Knucklehead Jan 18th, 2012 at 9:55 pm

I have never understood the you can’t drive the rest of your life thing. When he is done he has paid his due’s.

  36. 36 Eric Maurer (Evobuilder) Jan 18th, 2012 at 11:00 pm

we live in a country that allows any man, or woman, to pay their debt to society for wrongs committed. Billy is paying his dues, when freed, he, and only he, will decide what path to choose going forward. All of these armchair chopper freaks can speculate all they want, Billy’s future has nothng to do with anything other than himself and his choices. So everyone that is speculating can shut it…. and let a man decide his own future.

I, for one, respect Billy for paying his debt and what he does once the debt is paid, is 100% completely up to him. Best of luck Bill…. if you need anything once you are out, feel free to give me a ring.

  37. 37 RUB Jan 19th, 2012 at 1:13 am

Eric , your right , Billy made the decision not to go to trial , against his Lawyers advise , and took the plea deal from the state . I give him much respect for that . When his time is up , let him be . Billy was on a wild ride that ended badly for all involved . And I am not a Billy Lane fan .

  39. 39 Rogue Jan 19th, 2012 at 7:26 am

I have waited to see the comments before I ad mine and it has been pretty much what I have expected.
I will not dwell on Billy’s court case because I have already done that in previous posts other than saying the negative comments seem to be from people who do not have al the facts.
This post is about a member of the motorcycle lifestyle being part of a build off while he is in prison. I for one think it is a good thing.
There are a lot of motorcycle people in prisons around the country. Over the years there have been bike shows behind the walls. There are other institutions around the country that have similar programs to teach inmates how to work on vehicles including motorcycles. The system has these programs for multiple reasons and a couple of them are to keep inmates occupied and also in hopes that some of them will learn something that will help them when they are released. Some programs work and others do not just as not all the people being released will use what they were taught.
Billy is doing the best he can under the circumstances and I am sure he will be fine. He has never left motorcycling he just hasn’t been doing any building. He has been working and helping others while in the system and has earned the right to participate in the build.
I for one am in favor of helping a fellow motorcyclist (biker) if I can and I see this not only helping Billy but also other inmates as well.
Hopefully others will support that. I see and hear all this stuff about bro this and bro that and I feel that the true brotherhood that many of us enjoy takes the bad with the good and we should be there for both of them.

LISTEN UP YOU NAY SAYER ASSHOLE JERKS ,

Billy is more of a man than most you shitsticks here. Just ask your ol lady’s why they liked him and groped him….ha ha ha

Now…Billy committed the crime and is doing the time. The victim’s family is fine, after all two wrongs do not make a right.

I for one am looking forward to Billy’s educational and rehabilitative program being mirrored at several other institutions statewide and nationwide because if their is one thing most hard core felons like it’s damn motorcycles and babes.

Now let’s see what he builds for the troops.

I can see by the responses that most of these green peace bleeding heart liberals did not know Billy personally . I do and he is a stand up guy. He is a man doing his time for his mistake and not whining about it ! Do any of these tree hugger’s know that the man on the bicycle was highly intoxicated as well and that is why he rolled out of the parking lot right in front of Billy’s truck ? Well either way I am not sure the accident could have been avoided . If anyone should be upset it is the family not you witch hunters ! Go back to your Orange County Choppers TV Show and leave Billy alone !

  42. 42 Badams Jan 19th, 2012 at 7:05 pm

Been acquaintances with Billy PRE biker, all the way back to the Florida State student days. Humble beginnings, good guy from South Florida……the weight of it all crushed what he built. The question is what paradigms he has gone through during this time away, and what his creative influences will be post time served.

  43. 43 Bud Jan 19th, 2012 at 7:43 pm

Billy Lane is holed up about 20 miles from my house. A good friend works there. He tells me Billy is the only guy out there who knows what the f### he is doing, when it comes to fab work. Let’s not forget that Mr. Moreland was also shit faced. If you have not rode half in breeze, then cast the 1st stone.

  44. 44 Jay Jan 19th, 2012 at 7:51 pm

Rob. What you say is factually incorrect. Morelock was not on a bicycle, but on a moped and was in his own lane when hit by Billy. If Morelock was drinking, it is irrelevant. Also, Billy tried to physically resist having his blood sample taken when they checked his level of alcohol. Check the police reports and expertise before trying to look like you know anything about the case.

Frankly, I could care less about Billy Lane. Not a fan but not a hater. I do care that someone lost their life. I also could care less about Big Bear Choppers. I do care that people have been ripped off.

With that being said, the hypocrisy among those that post here is what has my attention. So Billy Lane kills someone and when a poster says something negative about him being able to do a build behind bars, the flame-throwers arrive? Some of these same folks are on the Big Bear Choppers post ready to hang the Alsop’s for being bad business people and ripping people off. Ummmm — killing someone is far worse a crime than stealing. Just sayin…

Again, I’m not supporting or hating on either situation or the individuals — just hating on the hypocrisy. That being said, I can’t stand up for Mr Lane here no matter how good the deed is. While it can be agreed he is in a work camp, this opportunity would never be given to you or I if we were in a work camp. More hypocrisy at play… You or I would be assigned work duty at a work camp vs. getting to do what we want — build a bike. I’m all for standing behind a brother but this whole situation just screams “f%$k you” to the general population.

Kinda like politics — it all depends which side you’re on…

2 days per month for good behaviour? That sounds quite low for a State Prison sentence; remember it’s protected by the Constitution’s prohibition against Cruel and Unusual Punishment and upheld by the Supreme Court. It’s mandatory.

My understanding is Florida is 30 days granted the day you enter jail, followed by about 10 days per month served. It varies because if you take classes or do work you earn more. He probably would be released, full sentence served, even if he never is granted parole, after about 4 1/2 years, and it could be sooner.

Let GOD judge each one of use and each one of us shall start judging it self and not others. he was already judged for what he did and is paying the price, nobody gets judged 2 for the same crime.

Sure, Billy was in the wrong for driving drunk. How many of you read the real reports that prove the guy he killed was driving drunk too. Or read that Billy has spent time with the family of the man he killed and has made peace with them. For the rest of his life, he will pass the scene of the accident and re-live it over and over. That plus the 6 years in prison sounds like more than enough punishment to me. I am 100% sure he will change his ways. I can’t imagine he will stay away from alcohol, but I’m damn sure he won’t drink and drive again.
