4 Men Arrested For Motorcycle Marriage Proposal Stunt On California Freeway

On January 27,2013 about 250 bikers blocked during 10 minutes the eastbound Interstate 10 in West Covina, California so that one of their friends could propose to his girlfriend. At one point, a bike sent up a cloud of pink smoke and the girlfriend accepted the proposal. But police was not amused…

The stunt was captured on video, went viral on the Internet, with the 24-year old groom – Hector Martinez – and his close friends bragging about their stunt. Mistake. He and 3 of his friends were all booked for investigation of misdemeanor public nuisance and participating in an unlawful assembly. Hector Martinez was booked for investigation of exhibition of speed, authorities said. Last year, 3 members of a rock band were each sentenced to probation and 35 days of community service for blocking a freeway to promote their music.

Marriage has always been a costly proposition, one way or the other…

    Cool story to read about.
I wouldn’t have wanted to be one of the people waiting in the traffic jam.

“no harm no foul seems cool to me” ??? Seriously stupid. It would be no harm if they were not blocking the freeway. what if there was an emergency behind them? What if there was no emergency but it was you on your way to work and I made you late with a stunt like this? Hey you got fired but no harm no foul. Asshats like that who can only entertain themselves by screwing with other people should go to jail. Somebody blocking the freeway gets run over by a truck. Now that seems pretty cool to me.

Hey Bob, I think they’re calling you for 4:30 dinner at the old folks home.

Like the other guys said, as long as no one got hurt I think it was great. A proposal the happy couple and all their friends will never forget.

Oh yeah, p.s. whoever counted 250 bikes their needs to get their eyes checked, that was about 100 bikes max.

    Congrats to the couple!

The Fast, Furious, & Stupid did a “Sideshow on the I-580 in front of the Oakland Colisium awhile back. Nobody got caught and it was a utube hit!

OK, but I don’t want to hear any crying from you when my friends and I block all the check out lanes at Wal-Mart after you get in line. Yeah, all my friends will reminisce for years about how cool it was to make you wait for years to come.

I think that was damn inconsiderate. There are plenty of other ways to impress your girl without needlessly inconveniencing other people. Reminds me of the time, I sat behind some asshole at a green light while he made out with his girlfriend. Everyone was honking at him. He could have just as easily pulled over to the side and made out with his girlfriend but he chose to inconvenience everyone else so they could share their moment.

Have you guys seen all the recent road rage and people that follow you and jump out with guns!!! and you really think its ok to pull stupid stunts like this! I pity the poor fool in the back that get hit by a car with a driver that was texting or on the phone!!! Good Luck!!!

For once, I agree with BobS.

Folks, this is a freeway. There are no Stop signs on the freeway where motorists are typically cruising at 65mph, or faster, as a rule.

So, to stop traffic suddenly and unexpectedly like this has potential grave repercussions starting miles down the road from the actual exhibition point of mass squid stupidity. It simply sets the stage for an unnecessary multiple vehicle pile-up complete with scores of traumatic injuries, including death(s), as well as multiple vehicles damaged all due to the dumbarsedness of a bunch of idiots on bikes.

I say Jail for a year for all involved.

Marriages may come and go, the civil disobedience rocks. All the comments from the safetycrats, nannycrats, and those with “cage derivative” thoughts, quit your damnable whining.

  15. 15 KD Apr 1st, 2013 at 5:40 am

For all of you complaining about the old folks and that they should quit whining: Give me a damn breack! Come back here and say that when you’re “older” and it’s your 16 year old daughter that was rear ended and put into the hospital because some other young punks wanted to be cool and remember something forever. They could have done a much safer and just as memorable proposal somewhere off of the interstate.

  16. 16 Reyn Mansson Apr 1st, 2013 at 8:53 am

I think it was a great stunt and maybe a small fine for some traffic code violation but hardly worth any real prosecution. We are such a police state anyway

Not sure if it’s playing in all markets but McDonalds is now testing a spicy chicken sandwich in the south and they are using an urban sport bike theme in the TV spot. Hey these kids are the future of our business. And the current mc biz and the AMA needs to take note. The AMA should be big behind freestyle stunting and it is not.

If “If” were a skiff, we’d be going for a boatride- old cajun saying used to illustrate those that use “If” to worry about things that didn’t happen i.e.: late and lost your job, daughter injured in crash that didn’t happen, are missing out on a lots of joie de vivre.

GREAT PLAN , GREAT PROPOSAL, AND DONE VERY WELL AS A UNIT! WE A RE ALL INDIVIDUALS..THATS WHY WE RIDE, BUT TO SEE A UNITY LIKE THAT ITS IMPRESSIVE.AND ALL THE COMPLAINERS..THEY WERE ON THE FREEWAY STOPPED FOR ABOUT 2 MINUTES…RELAX YOUR STARBUCKS WONT GET COLD.

  18. 18 Sid Apr 1st, 2013 at 9:30 am

Whining? That’s more b.s. than this ‘very romantic’ way of proposing. Don’t fool yourself if you think this shit doesn’t put a spot light on everything motorcycle for the wrong reasons.

Way too light of a sentence for the danger envoked by this Romeo

  19. 19 Tom Ryan Apr 1st, 2013 at 10:49 am

The craziest of things seem to happen in the wink of an eye. It would have been a very bad situation if a semi was haulin’ ass and lost his brakes at that precise time.

Last summer construction on hwy WA state. Traffic stopped. Car rammed my car from behind. Texting driver. Cop arrived and had to jumpout of way of 3 more rear end collisons.

  22. 22 TodT Apr 1st, 2013 at 1:51 pm

    One word, stupid.

  23. 23 Will Apr 1st, 2013 at 2:30 pm

Was it cool. Yeah, it was. But this is not the point.

Was it irresponsible. Yeah, it was. And this is the point. It’s not about the inconveniencing others, it’s about endangering others. That’s what this stunt did. And although nothing bad happened, the very real possibility of something bad happening was present during the stunt.

For anyone supporting them: How would you feel if people not part of the proposal had been injured during this act? Don’t avoid this question by stating no one was, it’s a hypothetical question.

  24. 24 BobS Apr 1st, 2013 at 2:53 pm

It’s not just the danger, it IS the inconvienence. Hey, you’re on your way home from work, it’s been a long day and the freeway comes to a dead stop because the Bloods and the Crips needed a neutral territory to work out a treaty so they blocked the interstate and did their business there. Are you pissed? Or a bunch of hombres with lowriders deciddes to parade up and down the highway you and your buds are going for a ride on and your 70mph blast through the twisties is now a 15mph putt because traffic can’t get around them. That’s just darn cute right? As soon as one person’s “freedom” becomes all about denying someone else theirs…they become assholes, not brothers.

  25. 25 Blackmax Apr 1st, 2013 at 6:06 pm

Is this about “If it’s too loud, you’re too old” type thing
Not to me, it was just plain dumb !!!!
It’s all cool till you hear the sounds of crashing/crunching metal behind you.
Then to post it !!!! They’ll never find me !!
    Yeah, right, Dumazz !!!!!!

  26. 26 Squid Squisher Apr 2nd, 2013 at 12:36 am

Just watching these idiots makes my blood boil. If I was stuck behind these assholes, I would be fighting an incredible urge not to run them over. Totally inconsiderate! Would it have made that much of a difference if they just pulled over the side carried out this stupid ritual? I guess it was more romantic to annoy people?

  27. 27 Darryl Briggs Apr 2nd, 2013 at 12:51 am

    I’m with the naysayers.

Incredibly irresponsible, stupid, and inconsiderate. “no harm, no foul?” Well I guess it’s ok to play Russian Roulette if it doesn’t land on the round right? No harm, no foul.

Anyway, I don’t have an opinion on what they should get fine wise. I’ll leave that up to the powers that be.

  28. 28 Will Apr 2nd, 2013 at 2:42 pm

    BobS:

Both of your recent examples, and I’ll reiterate, are about endangering others. Although there is the byproduct of inconvenience in your examples, the root problem is still the real possibility of endangering others.

Let me put it another way so hopefully you’ll understand: Inconveniencing me, although I don’t like it, only affects my convenience. Endangering me puts my life on the line and now we have a real problem.

I do understand what you’re saying BobS. However, you need to look at the root of the problem, not the byproduct of it.

This will be my last post on this news post.

Study your Walden Pond and you’ll note the key to something being Civil Disobedience is being willing to pay the penalties. Without that key component it’s just breaking the law.

NOW YOU KNOW WHERE THEY GET THE WORD MURDERCYCLES. and PUNKS!

  31. 31 David Apr 3rd, 2013 at 10:32 pm

Maybe doing yard work for everyone they held up in traffic for a month(each person) while the home owners sat in the shade and drank cold beer would be a good punishment.
