Permanent Harley-Davidson Rally Point To Be Completed For The 2015 Sturgis Rally. Sturgis 2nd Street Renamed Harley-Davidson Way.

Building on the 75-year agreement that makes Harley-Davidson the rally’s official motorcycle, Harley-Davidson broke ground to start construction of The Harley-Davidson Rally Point, the city’s new permanent year-round space for riders. The Rally Point, at the corner of Main Street and 2nd Street, (renamed Harley-Davidson Way) will include a stage for events, concerts and weddings.

An elevated area for riders to take pictures on their motorcycles with the iconic Sturgis sign as the backdrop is also part of the plan. The 11,000 sq. ft. plaza, in addition to being a destination for riders to gather during the rally, will also be open to visitors and locals for the remainder of the year. The plaza, with a price tag of about $2.3 million, will be paid with funds raised from sponsors such as Harley-Davidson and vendors adjacent to Second Street during the annual Sturgis motorcycle rally.

1Rally-Point-Fireplace“Sturgis is a mecca for riders around the world. The Harley-Davidson Rally Point establishes a new site in downtown Sturgis for people to gather year round,” said Bill Davidson, great-grandson of Harley-Davidson founder William A. Davidson and vice president of the Harley-Davidson Museum. “The renaming of 2nd Street to Harley-Davidson Way honors the legacy of our company’s founders along with all the extraordinary men and women who ride our motorcycles.”

careyhartbilldavidsonTo ensure the new multi-purpose space builds on the legacy of the brand and is pure Harley-Davidson, 74 bricks from the company’s Milwaukee headquarters, a building that once housed the company’s factory dating back more than 100 years, and one brick from the Harley-Davidson Museum will be integrated into The Rally Point’s final construction.

As part of the ceremonial groundbreaking, the bricks traveled 900 miles from Milwaukee on Harley-Davidson motorcycles and were delivered to Mayor Carstensen by members of the Harley Owners Group. Carey Hart, motocross star and 2015 Grand Marshall of the Sturgis City of Riders Mayor’s Ride, received the bricks with Mayor Carstensen. (bottom picture. Carey Hart, Bill Davidson)

Looks like H-D is desperate for attention! I quit buying their crap in the early 90’s when their ego got to big for their quality. I really like the recent century of innovation B.S. they spewed. Don’t get me wrong I appreciate them keeping the v-twin relevant, but BNG (bold new graphics) and doodads to bolt on doesn’t make for innovation.

I don’t know if my future grand children will believe me when I tell them what Sturgis was like before it became a theme park.

They should rename it “Selfie Plaza” 🙂

Hahahahahaha……ha…… Looks like HD is very worried and is trying to nail down “owning” Sturgis.
Not really the way to do this, MoCo. Why not just put out a good product? Like you used to, somewhere in the mid-Evo era. The twin cam is actually an excellent format that has deteriorated since first being brought out. Quit trying to continually make the product cheaper and moving manufacturing facilities overseas and explaining layoffs with lame excuses. I have 3 HD’s and I feel like if I could I’d like to dump 2 of them and get a Victory Magnum. But in the past few years HD resale value has gone in the toilet. I’d keep the old shovelhead.

This is an awesome asset for Sturgis that will be available year round for everyone to enjoy. A brilliant business move by Harley Davidson.

Sturgis has always been for sale. The price increases with Sturgis’s ego.

All of the top executives in a leadership role with the Motor Company rode through ice and snow from Milwaukee to Sturgis to hand-delivered bricks from Juneau Avenue that will be built into the new plaza. I wonder if any of the executives in a leadership role with Polaris/Indian/Victory even ride or participate in motorcycling past showing up and clocking into work each day. Hmm.

@Sturgis Pride- Steve Menneto VP of Polaris motorcycles got his Iron Butt Patch in 2011. So to answer your question…Yes.

@Sturgis Pride: You appear to be confused. “Harley Owners Group” or H.O.G. is a company run club/ organization that consists of registered Harley owners. It is NOT “All of the top executives in a leadership role with the Motor Company”.

Although it is kinda amusing to think of Keith Wandell attempting a 900 mile ride in the winter. He himself admits that he had little to no riding experience before becoming CEO of Harley-Davidson.

I like it ………… for me i prefer Cheyenne Crossing or the Moonshine Gulch Saloon in Rochford, its a lil cooler up there 🙂

Really, Harley, really, No REALLY ???
C’mon, Just 2 articles down you talk about laying off workers at the KC plant,
in a cost savings move & that’s the way of world business today …
My question to you is how many of the jobs could you have saved if:
    1. Did not set up a monument to yourself in a town which holds a rally
you did not create, but still try to claim (corporate sponsorship) as your own
with a stupid monument to self aggrandizement
    2. have your CEO give back a 1/4th of his corporate multi-million dollar bonus
to the people who actually earned it for him

Yes, i know that H-D has & is the leader in heavyweight motorcycles
But you gotta ask yourself (& anyone thinking about buying)
Is this the kind of stuff that i want to support with my money ????
As my old buddy Al would say, “Just a thought”?
(P.S. I’ll get to Sturgis again someday soon, but I will NEVER go to that plaza !!!!)
