Yesterday evening November 19 at 7.30 p.m. at the Port Of Los Angeles, in the presence of top Indian executives, of members of the press and of select VIP’s, 5 Roland Sands Design (RSD) built custom Indian Scout Sixty Hooligan bikes were revealed. It was followed by a live demonstration of the 5 Scout Sixty racing, tires howling, barreling bat-to-bar, pitching sideways into corners….Hooligan racing is a throwback to post-war era where riders took virtually any available motorcycle to race in the spirit of seeking adrenaline and camaraderie.
The 5 Hooligan Scout Sixty will race indoors on a short track at the Las Vegas Orleans Hotel & Casino on the evening of Saturday November 21 and are presented in partnership with Roland Sands Design (RSD) and AMA Pro Flat Track in conjunction with the “Superprestigio of the Americas” race. The world-class team of Indian Scout racers includes tRoland Sands himself, Red Bull/KTM stunt rider Aaron Colton, plus some surprise guest riders. Fans will be able to enjoy live streaming of the event on Fans Choice TV.
Hooligan racing is traced back to the 1930s, at a time when legendary Indian Motorcycle dealer Clarence “Pappy” Hoel began organizing regional hill climb events and flat track motorcycle races in and around Sturgis, South Dakota. Hoel was a founding member of the Jackpine Gypsies Motorcycle Club and he and the Gypsies are credited with starting the now world famous Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in 1938.
Today the flat track Hooligan racing category is rapidly gaining popularity with riders of all ages and experience levels because it brings the fun back into a less structured environment where any rider can race virtually any motorcycle. Framers or custom race chassis machines are not allowed in the class. It’s designed to allow racers to lightly modify existing street bikes for racing.
“The Scout is a great machine upon which to base a custom bike with modern rider friendly performance. The engine and chassis are rock solid and don’t need a lot of work, so DIY customizers can focus on the aesthetic modifications,” said Roland Sands. “It has been a blast designing and building these custom Indian Scout Hooligan bikes and after a quick test run at the local flat track I feel we have a competitive bike that will rip on the track.” (photography @ Barry Hathaway / Indian Motorcycle for Cyril Huze Post)
The factory Indian Scout Sixty
great job Roland
Great stuff. Go Indian.
Excited to see Indian doing flat track racing. Looks to me like the Scout is the hit bike of the year.
This Scout is getting extremely appealing to me. I may end up getting one if the lady agrees.
More personality than a Sportster and of course than a Street. Indian doing great. The Chief was some kind of disappointment but the Scout looks like 100% fun.
Personality is obviously extremely subjective.
Major PR thrust by Polaris Industries; entertaining, too…
Great lookin’ racer. LOVE the paint scheme and the wheels! Would be great to see a limited RSD version of the production Scout, kinda like Victory did with Ness.
Have Scout. Will race.
I like the Victory concept bike better than the scout.
It was a great event last night!
The new Scout is a hit, It can be easily modified/customized to make it your own bike.
Indian has a hit in there hands!
At $8,999 its affordable for an entry level rider, or a great starting point for that custom bike and it has the horsepower power around the track.
Watch Out Motorcycle industry, Indian is back with a full lineup!
Beautiful powerful bike
Wow, here I thought RSD was going to put out multiple piles of dogshit resembling the “unfinished” Scout posted earlier–I stand humbly corrected, these are incredible. They look ready for AMA.
Super Cool…!!!
RE:
“…traced back to the 1930s…”
Getting motorcycling (and hopefully motorcycle-people) back to its roots is certainly a positive sign that the culture is slowly moving away from the contemporary “guitar-hero” road warrior model.
Might even help clean up our public image, escalating insurance rates, and draconian legislation.
-nicker-
Not a real big fan of RSD or his work
but I have to give credit where credit is due,
those bikes looks awesome !!!!
Very Nice !!!!
The racers look great, the Polaris looks better (than the stock indian)but with pre production parts that are not going to make production, the Indians feel cheap and look worse in person, kind of like the mr.potato head of bikes (plastic stuck together) compared to the harleys and triumphs,
Meh. Another RSD dirtbike flattracker something or other.
Polaris is going Grand National Flat Track racing in the near future but it won’t be with this configuration.
Kawasaki has been the dominate bike in the ” twins ” GNC1 racing for several rears of late and in GNC1 singles it has been predominately Honda 450.
This is big for Indian and great for the sport, well done Roland.
It will be very, very cool to see HD and Indian going at it next Summer at the Springfield Mile. Add in Triumph, Ducati, Kawasaki, and even Yamaha (again).
Nice bike for shorter folks.
I like ’em. Yeah it sorta looks like other RSD bikes, but it does mirror his design style.
RSD has finally found his niche. Roland, stick with the flat track style. These bikes are top shelf. The true flat track design is awesome XR750/ Trackmaster Triumph etc. but it is very long in tooth. We the enthusiasts need some need some new input for the Flat Tracker. YOUR THE MAN! ..Z
More great RSD and Indian!
Street version, yuck, track version, well alright.
fuji..xr 750 has won the championship last few years..the 650 kaw (780) is a very potent motor but we just dont race on hard pack (blue groove miles) where the bike excels..we also ride cushions and slick tracks..where the xr has an advantage….the indian is nice and its nice to see other manufacturers involved..
The new Scout 60 is a great bike and Roland shows what you can do with it. Awesome job Indian AND Roland!
A 1. Re Read what I said.
Harley has not won the “TWINS ” title for several years . Fact ! 2011 was their last year of winning the twins title . http://www.amaproracing.com/ft/events/standings.cfm
In fact this year the title was won by Bryan Smith with four mile wins and one half mile on a Kawasaki by 28 points. The national flat track champion Jared Messed won one half mile
Take the time to research.
Another fact the majority of flat track twins GNC 1 and GNC 2 are Kawasaki
some Kawasaki’s in both classes are 650 cc some 700 cc and competitive several at 740 cc there may be a 750 out there but who knows. These bikes are rocket ships and inexpensive in comparison to . . . . .
A 1 CYCLES http://www.amaproracing.com/ft/events/standings.cfm . chk the last four years of flat track twins champion. the last year HD won twins championship was 2011.
nice bikes , BUT what really irritates me : if one has DESIGN in the logo , then why is that double ugly RADIATOR – the first thing i would redesign on that bike – left untouched & still looks like the annoying piece of plastic it is . just take a look at the new triumphs , straight from the factory . they have radiators & you – almost – don’t even notice them !
