Harley-Davidson 2nd Quarter Results. Worldwide Sales Down 1.9%. US Sales Down 5.2%. EMEA Region + 8.2%.

harleystockupdateThis Thursday morning Harley-Davidson Inc. (HOG) reported second-quarter earnings of $280.4 million. On a per-share basis, the Milwaukee-based company said it had net income of $1.55 per share. Harley-Davidson shares have increased 11 percent since the beginning of the year, while the Standard & Poor’s 500 index has increased 6 percent. The stock has decreased 12 percent in the last 12 months. Harley-Davidson worldwide retail motorcycle sales in the second quarter were down 1.9 percent on weak U.S. industry results. Harley-Davidson retail motorcycle sales in the U.S. were down 5.2 percent compared to the year-ago quarter, with the overall U.S. industry down 8.6 percent for the same period. Harley-Davidson U.S. market share for the quarter was 49.5 percent, an increase of 2.0 points over the same period in 2015. International retail sales increased by 4.3 percent over the prior year quarter

Results1Given market softness in the U.S., the continued competitive environment and global economic uncertainty, the company is taking the precautionary step of lowering its full-year shipment guidance. The company now expects to ship 264,000 to 269,000 motorcycles to dealers worldwide in 2016. This action is consistent with the company’s long-standing commitment to manage supply in line with demand.

Results2“While our investments to grow product awareness and ridership globally are beginning to take hold in a number of markets, current conditions in the U.S. and economic headwinds in other parts of the world combine to raise caution for us as we continue to focus our strategy to drive demand and deliver strong returns to shareholders,” said Levatich.

As anticipated Harley has difficulties in the US & Canada. Did you say Indian?

  2. 2 Drake Jul 28th, 2016 at 8:45 am

In 10 years Harley and Polaris will share the US market 25/25%. The remaining 50% to foreign brands.

  3. 3 Eddie Jul 28th, 2016 at 8:58 am

Attributing Harley’s woes to Indian is ridiculous. Harley’s sales were down in the US 5.2% while the overall US market was down 8.2%. The entire motorcycle market is down. Maybe you want to attribute that to Indian too.

  4. 4 BobS Jul 28th, 2016 at 9:27 am

If Harley keeps sliding at 5% and Victory/ Indian keep gaining at 23% it’ll only take 5 years.

I agree with BobS. The Kool-Aid drinkers want to deny it, but Indian is a force to be reckoned with. The “market softness” mentioned in the story isn’t affecting them. Harley continues to ship bikes to dealerships that some poor dude has to push out front every morning, and push back in every evening. Meanwhile Indian cannot keep up with demand for certain models like the Scout.

They are holding their own but things like spare parts prices are now ridiculous.I reckon they are going to drop their prices. China will fill that niche in fact they already are.

The Low Rider S, which is the only bike I would buy now is good value.
Thing is they have a much better finish than the opposition and I am sure that costs but they are going to have to drop prices and that will make a huge difference to market share.

Trump is a fraud, the Madoff of politics. Not fit to be President.

No one can expect to do well in an economy that has preformed as poorly as this on has.
If we ran my personal finances the way this administration has been running the country we’d have been locked up for fraud long ago….. Patrick le-me suggest you read D’Sousa’s book or see his movies about Obama, Hillary, and the DNC…. The first movie got him locked up for 2 years. If that’s any criterion the second movie should get him life…

Rebel: Lol As much as MOCO wouldn’t mind shifting the blame of their lower sales onto Washington I think they are more than aware the problem resides in Milwaukee.

Polaris is like a rat nibbling away at HD……….as for politics….very sad with these 2 …..Nov 8th get your cash out of the market and wait it out

Obama is looking so good, and is honest and sane 🙂

Iam waiting for the democrats to give Hillary a Macy’s/Sax 5th Ave Credit Card to get some clothes

  15. 15 tundra Jul 29th, 2016 at 12:56 pm

I wonder what the new Milwaukee Eight will do for sales……

  16. 16 richards Jul 29th, 2016 at 1:06 pm

HD…112 years of continuous MC manufacturing and sales. 50% of the TOTAL big bike market. I’ve ridden lot of different marques and Harley does it best for me. For those who have a different preference…Good for you. Ride what YOU like to ride. However the constant whining about Harley and the prognostications about their demise, from people who don’t know what their talking about is getting very old. Enough said!

  17. 17 Jerrman Jul 29th, 2016 at 3:52 pm

Gee, and I thought I was reading a great motorcycle blog. When I want to hear about someone who has absolutely zero experience to run a country, but has the resources to scam working people, investors and intimidate with lawsuits, I’ll watch Fox “news.” (not gonna happen). I think I’ll just go for a ride until all this blows over.

BTW, despite the doomsayers about HD, yes, they’ve shown some vulnerability, but they still have the majority of the big bike market, they have owners who tattoo HD on their bodies and their exhaust sound gets the juices going like no other. IMO, a little (or a lot) of competition is good for everyone, the manufacturers and the buyers.

    Couldn’t agree more, richards…

  19. 19 Zenaldo Jul 31st, 2016 at 10:53 am

Past records show a significant bump in sales when a new motor platform is unveiled..guess we’ll see next month.. The MoCo is patiently waiting…

  20. 20 Blackmax Aug 1st, 2016 at 4:09 pm

    Agree with Zenaldo !!
When the new engines come out (110 for regular line, 120 for CVO’s)
You will see a sales bump !
But again, Polaris is making their presence felt, slowly but surely !

And somebody please tell me when did this turn into a political page ???
To hell with them both !!!
They are both liars & megalomaniacs !!!
can somebody find 2 other people to run for the job, Please !!!!
America is screwed, no matter which one wins !!!

Trump is a faker, the Bernie Madoff of politics, a complete fraud who thinks he is god and with absolutely no knowledge of the world. He is very dangerous, will destroy our economy and can take us to WWIII. Save yourself. Vote Clinton.

Coming back from a trip in 3 european countries Unanimously they are very worried by the crazyness of Americans who could elect Trump. I told them that his supporters are rednecks, by definition uneducated losers with no judgment. They asked me how many rednecks they are in thre US. Too many…Save America, vote for H. Clinton.

Harley is an aging motorcycle ridden by mostly older men. They are certainly better built than a decade ago but still low tech, higher maintenance, and overpriced. Harley is dying slowly because they are little different than they were 40 years ago. One of the surprises that Harley owners have found is that their bikes were not as valuable as they thought they were. Two year old Harleys don’t bring the price that owners thought they would, except at Harley dealers when buying a new bike. Harley Davidson, not bad but generally overrated and less reliable than the Japanese bikes. Ride what you like, but younger riders no longer want a motorcycle with 1940’s technology, stogy looks, and lower performance.
