Shot on March 15, 2017 on the I-880 southbound in Milpitasin California, this terrifying accident is a reminder to all automobilists to check your blind spot before attempting any maneuver. Even more true when lane splitting is authorized like in California. The biker survived. But, please be always aware of your surroundings.

Wow. It happens so fast.
Anticipate the worst…
WHY THE HELL DO YOU HAVE TO PLAY THE VIDEO AT FULL VOLUME?
Wow…
Stupid is as stupid does.
Git Real
It should also be a warning to us as riders, just because you can lane split doesn’t mean someone won’t pull in front of you, be cautious, watch the cars closely, heck this has happened to me in my truck in a turning lane where some idiot doesn’t check behind them, just expect that nobody is checking their six as everyone is only interested in what gets them where they want to go all others be damned .
Glad he’s ok.
yeah, glad he’s alive
the terribly typical blind spot accident : (
& i don’t know rules over there but some might find interesting, worth noting and thinking about…
in Queensland Australia… lane splitting is legal but many rules under the legislation.
Only allowed to do when traffic is stopped or almost stopped and maximum bike speed of 30kph (18mph) yes, seems a bit slow but it’s a little safer.
If caught riding/ breaking rules of legislation it’s a $360 fine and loss of 3 license points… pretty stiff penalty though lots of guys here risk it by speeding etc…this can make other riders almost as dangerous as the cars in traffic… can’t trust anyone! I’m not against so called speeding or hooning/ wheelies and all that stuff but there is a time and a place, ride to the conditions & stay safe people…
Lane splitting may be legal in some places, but it is stupid in all places.
Crappy music!
Excessive rate of speed by the biker. Even though I feel the car cut him off if the biker had been traveling at a reasonable speed he could have easily made it around the car.
As someone who’s been lane-splitting in California for the past 11 years, it is my opinion that this was 100% the rider’s fault. When there is a fast moving lane, next to a slow moving lane, the chances of a car hopping over without warning are extremely high. He didn’t have an escape plan, and got a lesson in the Laws of physics.
He already paid the price for riding foolishly. Writing down silly laws and robbing him won’t help anybody.
If you think lane-splitting is stupid, then go get in your cage. This is a motorcycle blog.
he shudda just stayed behind the rap music guy in the HOV lane..that lane was moving along pretty good..lane splitting shud only be done when all lanes are creeping in my opinion
I agree. Shoulda stayed behind HOV ride. He was moving pretty good, but we don’t know all the facts. It’s a tough call…
I know that part of the 880 S well as I used to commute to San Jose from Union City for work and I would not lane split unless the traffic was a parking lot (which is always around 8AM weekdays) even then I would think twice and probably stay in the diamond lane. The road is always busy and the surface is quite uneven in places, it’s just not the road to split lanes on. Just because you can lane split does not mean you should.
I’m back in Sydney now and we can lane split when the trafic is stopped but the cagers are an agressive bunch of dopes down under and I would not trust them for a second. I have seen too many drivers either move the car over so you can’t get through or open the car door on you so as to cause you to crash into them.
This has NOTHING to do with lane splitting.
But it has everything to do with a VERY bad riding strategy.
When you decide to squirt through spaces where your not expected you can expect to get smacked.
Correctly adjusted, a side mirror should be ste to see cars in the drivers left side blind spot, not down the white line.
The rider would have to be expecting a driver to look in the mirror at just the right time to see him just as he’s crossing back in front of the camera car.
Absolutely stupid…. this is a break-in biker….PERIOD.
-nicker-
I would never go that fast when traffic in the next lane is going that slow – it’s just begging for shit like this to happen. Also, when the bike pulls into the diamond lane, he should have gone for the left side of the lane to give him a little margin for error.
Couldn’t see if the Pontiac used its signal, but it was changing lanes when there really wasn’t room to do it safely, even if the bike wasn’t there.
Still, thank God this rider was wearing his helmet, otherwise he would’ve been fucked up!
