nice parts, but death to the fakers
Original Design and patented rocker covers was by Lawayne Matthies’s Xzotic cycle products in Dallas, Texas. He had conversions for Evos that made them look like a panhead, Knucklehead or Indian, He sold a ton of these before selling the designs and patent design to Custom Chrome. He then began selling his Mystery designs trike Independent rear suspension kit and bodies. Again, he patented the design and many features. Having known him and working on a number of proto design projects it was always a great adventure with plenty of rough bumps along the way. Very little in drawings or sketches. He would just start telling you what he wanted and leave you to your own interpretation. Comes back the next and not what he had in mind so you argue and do it again. Great guy who left us to soon. Glad I had the pleasure of knowing so long.

I’m conflicted. I’m all in on customizing modifying and tinkering. It just seems odd to make a new bike look old, a slow bike sound fast, an uncomfortable bike less comfortable, etc.

My Shovelhead was repainted along her life to have a ’65 Panhead paint scheme and Pan badges. I hate it, great paint scheme but if I wanted a Pan, I would have bought a Pan. Be proud of what your bike is and don’t try and make it something it isn’t. I changed the badges back to ’70 Shovel and it looks a little better, but the paint scheme on the tanks is going to drive me crazy till I change it. Never liked those Xzotic pieces either, I get the engineering and appreciate that, but fake is fake. Good luck.
I guess you all would piss and moan about putting Shovel jugs and heads on an old Panhead -something I detest ’cause I love Pans but, I digress. The only justification is performance and we could argue the merits of that vs. Pan purity for days, otherwise, to each his own.

I guess we better make sure we never buy a Heritage soft tail or a new springer anything as we hate fake motorcycles. Come on guys not everyone has the skill to ride a classic and some of us did and don’t want to do that again.

I wish Cyril would do a story on Conquest Customs. They specialize in Victory so we’ll probably not hear anything now for 50 years until some other company resurects (Easter ref!) the brand. But…customization that’s all about faster bikes. More powerful motors, better brakes, better suspension…seriously cool shit that isn’t copying anything else. As I said, I get customizing a motorcycle. But the above is what speaks to me.
Architect – I agree. I love and have owned many different harley engines and was proud to own all of them. Why would I want to make it look like something else and who are these trying to impress really? Improving performance and personalizing for riding style I understand. This makes no sense to me. But then again, the same company sells a fake kicker too.
i think you guys are wrong in this case. if the sportster ironhead look of the upper right picture, eliminates the 3 piece evo style rocker cover, than its a functional update not just a retro cover .
