 At the end of the 90’s beginning of the 00’s, the epicenter of custom bike building shifted from the USA to Europe, imposing – thanks to its German, Austrian and Swiss builders – a large quantity of drag style inspired creations. And now, members of the custom motorcycle industry are looking at fresh building ideas coming from young builders in Asia. Customs built from Japanese and Indian brands, but also more and more crafted from our 2 American big brands, Harley and Indian, old and new models. For reasons unknown or purely accidental, Greater Jakarta in Indonesia, – the second largest urban agglomeration in the world with a population of 31 million – is where a concentration of young talents can be found. Particularity, the preferred styles in this region of the globe seem to be the low Chopper and Cafe Racer. Styles somewhat more appropriate to confront the crazy Asian street traffic congestion, and well adapted to locals morphology.

Thrive Motorcycles belongs to this small elite of Asian group of builders making a worldwide statement by celebrating Harley’s race heritage and attitude with different lines and details rarely seen on customs of well known builders. This project is based on a 2000 Sportster XL 1200 Evo motor directly imported from the USA. So many Sportsters have been customized that the challenge for duo Indra Pratama and Barata Dwiputra was to build a bike looking different, pushing its racing attitude to the edge but without in any way compromising reliability…

Because of distance and cost, Asian builders are rarely present in the US and Europe participating to bike shows. But the great one-day Japanese show of Yokohama is a fabulous source of inspiration for those working in this region of the globe. There, Thrive Motorcycles saw great samples of the best Japanese chops and came back to their shop convinced that they could create their own timeless style. And it tool them 2 years to complete this creation… Frame wizard Andi at Brodonolo Custom Garage in Central Java was ordered the bike foundation. Then Thrive got started with the all-aluminum bodywork. It includes a one-off tail-end/rear fender, the unusual finned gas tank, the cute mini fairing, the oil tank and the electric box.

Forks were chopped to look thin and add a sense of cleanliness. For the same reason, the 21” front wheel is brakeless. In front, this Sportster rolls on Avon Speedmaster and in the rear on classic ribbed Firestone on a 18” wheel. Rear braking is a chain conversion from a Softail adapted to the one-off frame. A chain tensioner was installed and made, like often on custom bikes, with a skateboard wheel. For a very neat look, cabling is internal running through the bars equipped with Mooneyes grips. The shop fabricated its own shifter/pegs. Running lights/turn signals are recessed inside rear frame tubes. Frame is black powder coated, with body work spray painted in Sapphire Blue and Silver.
