Harley-Davidson Upset By Potential US Tariffs On Imported Steel And Aluminum And Possible Retaliatory Measures From Other Nations

Harley-Davidson needed to make an official statement in reaction to the potential steel and aluminum tariffs proposed by President Trump. Michael Pflughoeft, one of Harley-Davidson spokesman made yesterday the following statement.

“Import tariffs on steel and aluminum will drive up costs for all products made with these raw materials, regardless of their origin. Additionally, a punitive, retaliatory tariff on Harley-Davidson motorcycles in any market would have a significant impact on our sales, our dealers, their suppliers and our customers in those markets.”

A tariff being a tax, one doesn’t have to be an economist to understand that the increased cost of materials is always passed to the consumer. Something that Jean-Claude Juncker, European Commission President, reminded POTUS while threatening retaliatory tariffs on a list of other major US major brands.

Harley-Davidson is already in a difficult situation with missed global sales objectives since 2008 and struggling to remain relevant in a more and more Millennial-driven market. With a retataliatory 25% tariff on imported Harleys to Europe (50% of global sales) Harley’s market would collapse on this continent. Polaris is not so concerned because 50% of its sales are made to Canada but this country, like Mexico, would be exempted of tariffs, so with no retaliation possible.

Gee . Will ya look at that all you deluded MAGA wags thinking a trade war would actually benefit the US . Your very own American Idol speaking out against the blatant stupidity of such an action . As has the now former US Economic Advisor and everyone else with half a brain .Golly . Real economic consequences . Real damage to US industry . Real potential devastation to the value of the US dollar . Real impact on jobs . But hey ! Y’all just keep believing in and supporting the lies . To quote one of your own . ” Lets see how that works out —– For YOU ! “

political issues bombard us from a myriad of other sources, wish it was NOT HERE TOO?

granted it’s reality, yet I come here to get away from the other stuff. I WELCOME THE TARIFFS, A TRADE WAR! we have been a world-wide patsy for too long. did you know other countries (euro & Asian) penalize businesses that relocate for cheaper costs? and Germany, Japan, many have very aggressive tariffs…wow, Harley will be forced to ADAPT. other potential victims…US Bourbon? LEVI’s? last time I checked, Bourbon sales highest since records were kept, extremely popular throughout the US! and LEVI’s still #1 in the US!

as far as all the whiners go, adapt & overcome…how the strong have survived since the dawn of time. how is Jesse, Billy Lane still relevant? they moved on & found other niches. GOD BLESS THEM BOTH!!!!

OCC? perfect example…same old stuff = same old results. in the dumpster they are!

again, adapt & overcome – have done it my whole life, self made and relied on me to make change, so can everyone else.

The proposed steel and aluminum tariffs are NOT targeted tariffs like what the EU is foolishly threatening. Trump made a point of not wanting a trade war like they propose, but if that’s what an arrogant EU wants, let’s strap on and have at it. Maybe the last President bowed to Brussels, but those days are over.

  10. 10 Patrick Mar 8th, 2018 at 10:55 am

He was supposed to help Harley? POTUS will never admit he is wrong even when he knows he is.

President Donald Trump signaled on Thursday he was intent on slapping new tariffs on steel and aluminum despite lingering legal questions and steep resistance from members of his own party and major US allies.

The move was widely expected to set off a trade battle that Trump insists the US can win — but which even some of his closest advisers worry could seriously damage a growing American economy.

  11. 11 evo80 Mar 8th, 2018 at 11:02 am

Okay hd you only want tariffs when it threatens your company go figure, remember it may happen to you again.

  12. 12 Boots Mar 8th, 2018 at 11:31 am

What is Harley upset about? The tariffs are on steel and aluminum imported into the United States. Aren’t Harleys, made in America, made of American steel and Aluminum? Is my Harley made from Chinese or Pakistani steel? Have I been living a “made in American” Lie?

  13. 13 PR Mar 8th, 2018 at 11:35 am

Patrick-Woody’s: Canada and Mexico will only be exempt if NAFTA is renegotiated. That is a big deal as they supply 25% of imported US. Again, that is a big deal. Look at the steel and tariff issues with Obama and Bush. Really nothing new here except headlines.

Tariff needs to extend to all imported goods made from steel or aluminum as well as imported steel and aluminum.

That would build US industry and bring back real manufacturing jobs

Can not just go part way.

Apparently Boomer feels a man who bankrupts his businesses multiple times (and is known for not paying his debts to subcontractors) is a great businessman whom we should all implicitly trust.

Alas, as long as there are Boomers in the country, God help us all. These people will just keep voting for the likes of Trump and continue to extol his “business sense” while he bankrupts one last business enterprise — the American economy.

Tariffs should have been imposed many years ago and more specifically by the past administration of late. CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME, not in China, Europe, Mexico, Canada, nor Russia! Let the dynamics of the tariffs play out and manage accordingly. Canada and Mexico will get concessions yet to be determined.

Show some respect to the President and Commander in Chief of our fine country. Be a responsible citizen, Man Up for your family and for your country!

  34. 34 2Wheels Mar 8th, 2018 at 5:14 pm

I think a lot of people are forgetting that Bush W imposed tariffs on imported steel back in 2002, and we saw exactly what is being predicted by economists today. Domestic steel suppliers raised their prices to match the imported steel, and they were able to do this because the domestic supply is not sufficient to match the demand (Microeconomics 101). OEM’s in the US, including H-D, were hit hard by “steel surcharges” from their suppliers which drove up the cost of goods, reduced margins, and created a barrier to exports. This hurt H-D’s bottom line and their export volumes… I was employed there at the time and saw this directly. This is without retaliatory tariffs from the EU; that would make the situation much worse for H-D and Polaris.

I think if people could get past their left vs. right bullshit (see: Boomer & BobS, sorry guys but you’re easy examples…) and look at the actual science of Economics and Trade the answers are right there in front of us. Protectionism in a global economy results in shrinking the economy of the protectionist state. MAGA…

As witnessed above, It’s amazing just how stupid many trump supporters are. Even Cohen, trumps top financial advisor quit over this. There are many of trumps repubs congress that have told him this is stupid and will hurt employment and cost AMERICAN jobs. If he does it, it will put us in a trade war with our ALLIES! Hopefully he will realize what will mean for Harley and other steel and alum users in the USA like the CAR COMPANIES. If he does enact a tariff as described, I can’t wait for some of the geniuses above to discover they can’t afford the vehicle/car they wanted because the tariff was passed along.

so here’s a worthy question amidst all this banter?

what does it really matter – tell me, point blank…how many of you are…were…actually contemplating the purchase of a new Harley? c’mon now, people.

and there are more than enough “previously loved low mileage units” in circulation for all of us “industry folks” to ride, repair, resell, and profit from for many years to come.

as the dealers turn their backs on units 10+ years old? custom shops/indys will prosper. and now is the single best time to be a consumer…name your price!

love me some capitalism, reality, and America. bring on the tariffs!

Like it or not, the bill is signed and we will see how all this shakes out. Looks like there are some loop-holes built in though. With the most recent fact that North Korea wants to have a sit-down with Trump directly….maybe, just maybe, this is all a public ploy designed by Trump and his team to show the world he means business and not f**king around. The “Rocket Boy” might be actually be afraid and wants to settle the squabble with US so he can go back and eat and drink his way to a early death, in peace. Dunno…food for thought though.

  44. 44 Septic the Sceptic Mar 9th, 2018 at 12:45 am

@ Aaron! Trump (the CEO) has a fiduciary duty to get the best value for money for his shareholders and unfortunately that means going OS for now. Trump (the POTUS) has the duty to do what’s best for the country and the people. Which is what he’s doing.

  45. 45 Boomer Mar 9th, 2018 at 2:26 am

Aaron; something like 50k factories and 30 million jobs left the USA. We simply don’t make stuff here like we use to. Bringing them back and finally securing the borders is what MAGA is all about. When we don’t have foreigners from the rest of the planet stealing their way into our country in the dead of night or overstaying their visa’s; our jobs go to us and our wages increase in a normal free-market way. Our quality of life in general improves. Did you know hourly wages have been stagnant since the 70’s? It’s time to move that needle on the dial. Then the Trump’s and your boss can make their products right here in the USA (again). Merit-driven immigration is key. Stopping all welfare payments to illegals is critical. They must go home. It’s time. We can’t afford to support the poor and lazy. We have a debt to pay down and a deficit to balance. The Republican Party is NOW the party of the working men and women. The Dem party is the party of illegal aliens, fringe groups, and freaky college commies.

  46. 46 coma Mar 9th, 2018 at 8:26 am

Sorry for H-D, but that person in the oval office will only listen when his fan base (bikers for Trump, haha!) is in danger to understand what’s going on, and they’ll have a much easier time of getting the message if a household name like H-D is on the tariff.

  47. 47 Calif Phil Mar 9th, 2018 at 8:56 am

If Harley bought their steel/aluminum from American producers, they would not be upset about this.
I don’t care if I have to pay more 1 cent more for a 6 pack or 25 million more for my next airliner. The USA needs a strong steel and aluminum production. What are we going to build ships with when China goes to war with us? Ask them to pretty please sell us some steel. America first! Thank you President Trump for putting our country first.

  48. 48 NewYorkMyke Mar 9th, 2018 at 9:05 am

So the world is going to retaliate for American tariffs by targeting Harley-Davidson! I couldn’t be prouder: I hear so many say Harley gets parts from other countries, Harley’s aren’t the only mc made in America & it’s true that some parts cannot be made in America but nothing symbolizes America more than Harley-Davidson, that’s why I began riding Harley’s in the 60s & why I’ve been selling Harley’s for the last 25 years! Fact is it’s critical to this country that we protect our steel & aluminum business which has been under attack for decades. Would you like our military to source parts from Asia & Europe? Targeting us may cost more or it may not but it won’t jeopardize the security of the country or the safety & effectivness of our military if they target us, but nothing says we’re American more than when we stand up & take these hits! I think I speak for many of us who bleed orange & black & are proud to stand for the Red, White & Blue!

    VIVA BOSS HAWG!

Funny how the simplest solutions can solve a vast array of supposedly complex issues.

There was a time when ‘MADE IN THE USA’ [MITUSA] meant what it said.

And MITUSA meant it was among the best in the world. I grew up in the UK and in Holland. I remember vividly my grandfather’s proudest possession was his pale blue Ford Ranchero. Being an Englishman of some standing and a rabid patriot, he nonetheless appreciated what MADE AMERICA GREAT and that was the vehicles they made in America, by Americans, from American materials…

Btw – making quality goods from cheap steel (aluminium, etc), is just a paradox, it is nothing else…

PS – How about we keep politics out of motorcycling; just a thought…

    Gentlemen

It’s not only steel and aluminum that the Chinese transship through other countries and dump prices with. In my industry it has been a race to the bottom for many years with foams, fabrics, threads, etc….

Now bear in mind that Americans have gotten much bigger with many being obese (last survey here shows that 70% of Volusia County/Daytona, FL is deemed to be obese…Take a look at yourself when you stand, can you see your goods without tilting your head forward and sucking it in ? haha) but around 40% go shopping hoping to buy the cheapest mattress they can….and that is OK with me because we will kindly direct you to another store….sort of like Winn-Dixie or Publix here in FL and those that live here know this. I shop Publix!

We have great customers that value their sleep and, in turn, send us great referrals. We are a sleep shop, not just a mattress store, however, we do carry limited value (not cheap) priced mattress sets, but when a buyer is a larger person and shopping for the most used piece of furniture in the home, one needs to remind them that cheap isn’t good and good isn’t cheap. Our customers appreciate the transparency and knowledge we present to them along with our numerous selections to choose from.

Yes quality and service comes at a higher price. Suffice it to say, WE DO NOT SELL MATTRESS SETS MADE IN CHINA AND NEVER WILL ! So with this rant over with…thank the consumer and that would be you! Now you will pay for racing to the bottom with higher prices across the board for most all goods to MAGA!

I FOR ONE WELCOME THE TARIFFS AND FAIR, IF NOT BALANCED TRADE! Again, It’s simple! Buy American and MAGA!

Of course you could just tell your manufacturers IF ITS NOT MADE ENTIRELY FROM USA RAW MATERIALS YOU ALL (That means everyone) WILL STOP BUYING THEIR PRODUCTS.

Name 1 single good reason why any person would ever buy a French car!
    Its called “PATRIOTISM”
I think that’s a word the USA has always held dear.

  65. 65 Xenu Mar 9th, 2018 at 5:46 pm

“Name 1 single good reason why any person would ever buy a French car!”
#1 If they’re French, that would be patriotic.
    Yes.

  66. 66 Xenu Mar 9th, 2018 at 5:51 pm

Oh, the word patriot comes from a French word, “patriote”

    Hi Boss Hawg,
I bought a mattress recently and would never buy Chinese, WHY ?
Because they do not have regulatory bodies that will stop them from using toxic or carcinogenic materials. They are a Military Dictatorship ! Do they give a Shiite about Western countries ..NO.
The Same applies to allot of products made there.
They dump lower quality steel on our market and when we looked at putting quality tests on imports China threatened our Food exports there. We are basically one huge farm. So that was a huge threat.
They buy our baby formula in China, why ? because their own is often of a very bad quality.. NO regulations.
Whilst driving in piles for a Highway overpass recently the piles collapsed … Guess why !!

Are you sure, Bill? Or is that just inconvenient? Pretty sure someone in the aluminum can business could do the breakdown on what % or aluminum (including recycled) comes from where, and what the tariffs would affect. Energy, labor, insurance, transportation also figure into price of a current can, how much would they go up per 6-pack?

  73. 73 BOSS HAWG Mar 10th, 2018 at 9:19 am

@ Kafkaesque….. By what you have written, you know nothing about my business or my suppliers. You buy all from Amazon! However, let me know when you do learn and know the facts and maybe I will give you a courtesy response to some of the ignorant blabber you have written.

@ Number6…..I did not think for one moment you would join me.

    TARIFFS ARE ON! ENJOY!

Beautiful day here and as the DW above has stated, I am headed to the “77th Bike Week so I can personally dispel the myths” and look for the Ghostbusters.

Well, if nothing else, this thread has proven TDS is real. Only someone with Trump Derangement Syndrome could believe the Clown News Network or MSNBC that all of President Trump’s business deals ended in bankruptcy when in REALITY only a tiny fraction did. People with TDS don’t live in the real world; rather they live in a world of fantasy and make believe like Hollyweird. If I see someone has TDS I stay far away from them. They could be the next mass murderer. Most of the killers are of the far left ilk with major delusions. Never turn your back to those with TDS.

I don’t think there will be any retaliation. It’s all talk. These countries will adjust to keep trading with us. India has already offered to knock their 100% tarrif on bikes down to 50%. We need to be able to produce raw materials in this country. Harley will figure it out. The European bike industry does not want a trade war with us because we are a big market for them.

  76. 76 Roberto Mar 11th, 2018 at 8:53 am

I guess the previous administration’s policy of don’t piss off any other country at all costs is gone.

Hillbilly Jime with a website link that goes nowhere; no one forced you to read through this particular thread. You could have easily passed over it without getting your knickers in a bunch. Silencing others is anti-first Amendment. They do that in dictatorships and communist countries. I can’t stand some of the things said by many on the left but I will fight to the death for their right to say them. That freedom and our 2A Rights are what separate us from being subjects rather than the citizens we are.

  83. 83 Charles Mar 12th, 2018 at 8:06 am

Harley announced the new plant in India before all of this Tariff stuff. There’s gonna be a whole lot of Indian Harley’s running around when they close the York plant when they can’t maintain market share and the stock dumps. If a Harley was made with 90% US parts, we wouldn’t be having this conversation. That new high-tech plant they build in India with robotic assembly like Detroit will be 4 times more efficient than York and will be expandable. So if India is gonna lower the tariffs 50% on motorcycles delivered to US…
If a manufacturer is destined to make something overseas because of their particular situation, it will happen again. Lose 500 jobs in one place and look, 500 new steel jobs in Pittsburgh, Pa. just announced. Market share has fluctuated since the beginning of time. What percentage of a Harley that was built in 1960 was US parts? vs 2018?

  84. 84 Dirtfertaters Mar 12th, 2018 at 8:17 am

H-D needs to get a little better at business and learn how to communicate with a new consumer. There is a piece of the story missing here. I know of 2 US Steel plants that are immediately opening back up and bringing thousands of US jobs back. One in Lorain, Ohio and one in Granite City, Ill. Those people lost their jobs because of all of the steel coming in from China.

  85. 85 hark Mar 12th, 2018 at 8:49 am

If its made in America why is steel a big deal! And if Harley steel does come from Canada there would be no tariffs.

The Soros crowd is back. Do you guys get paid by the hour or response?

  87. 87 BOSS HAWG Mar 12th, 2018 at 12:44 pm

Tariffs you say ? Bring ’em on!

FACT: PT Sunhere Buana International’s exports of mattress uncovered innerspring units from China failed to respond to Leggett & Platt (LP makes around 95% of all domestic steel innerspring units) petition for dumping steel prices made to the Dept. of Commerce.

Subsequently the Dept Of Commerce (DOC) spanked their asses for dumping their Chinese steel prices! The DOC assigned a rate of 234.51% (tariff) to the manufacturer’s exports from China, but applied to the importers! It is the highest rate on record and the rates are intended to address unfair pricing tactics of foreign producers that have had an adverse effect on domestic steel manufacturers in the form of jobs and or financial losses.

To the Domestic Steel Producers GAME ON, let’s all MAGA!

Maybe this is another myth Franz Kafka’s fictional world poser here wishes to debunk?

All the bikers or claim to be bikers (see a previous post)don’t have the sense to read their owners manual to change their brake fluid but they know how the world’s economy works, Want a simple cost per vehicle go to Kevin Cameron article on cycle world I’m sure he put more thought into his article about a industry he understands than all the keyboard bickering going on here

  89. 89 Felix Mar 12th, 2018 at 10:15 pm

A lot of Testosterone shone in the replies. A few soy boys. Probably not even motorcycle riders. Keep America great !.

  90. 90 Tim Mar 13th, 2018 at 4:21 am

True American, Harley Davidson motor cycle owners are not going to complain about the higher cost of a there favorite motorcycle. especially when they are getting the best quality steel and aluminum parts on their M/C I have gotten new parts for my 2003 HD in the past few years and found that the steel and aluminum parts are imported and not the quality they once were. Harley should stop complaining about putting more money in their pockets or getting less and just concentrate on putting out a fine American made motorcycle. The customers will buy them more. (I know that other parts of the M/C are also imported. Be American 100%.

  91. 91 Jarrod Mar 15th, 2018 at 9:58 am

The EU doesn’t have anything against Harley-Davidson. The EU is targeting Trump. They chose a company with a low pain threshold in a state that Trump won by only 270k votes in the last election. Harley sells about 45k units in Europe per annum, or about 1/5th of total sales, but unlike the Asian units that are manufactured overseas these are exported from the US. So the overall impact would be large, and the pain would be felt in home manufacturing facilities. HD’s private response to the White House was likely stronger than its anemic press release. While the company had to say something, I also imagine the White House asked them not to make it too strong because an iconic company in Wisconsin going ape in the press is exactly what the EU wants.

  92. 92 Boomer Mar 15th, 2018 at 4:44 pm

Jarrod; I bet you nailed it. It’s a shame so much of our everyday lives is affected by politics. More so now, it seems, than at any other time I personally can remember.

We truly are in a cold civil war right now which could go hot at any time with the right fuel. Spring is around the corner; hopefully we can get back to building, wrenching, and ridin’; at least for a time.

Anyone notice the connection between products that the European Union is threatening with tariffs?
Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Assembled in Wisconsin, Speaker Paul Ryan’s state.
Levi jeans. From California, Rep. Kevin McCarthy’s state.
Kentucky Bourbon. Home of Mitch McConnell.
    Coincidence? I think not.
