New Ownership For World’s First Indian Motorcycle Dealer

Mark Moses, founder and general manager of the award-winning Indian Motorcycle Charlotte announced two new owners of the World’s First Indian dealership. Tim Sutherland, owner & general manager of Coastal Indian Motorcycle of Myrtle Beach SC and Lloyd Greer, founder and owner of Lloyd’z Motorworkz of Pine Bush, NY signed the new ownership agreement today, marking an exciting, historic milestone for Indian® motorcycle zealots worldwide. Indian Motorcycle Charlotte opened its doors in October 2008 as the first Indian dealer in the world, with a variety of Kings Mountain-built machines. Located about 25 miles from the factory at I-85 Exit 22, the unique building has won numerous architectural design awards. The business has been a Dealernews Top 100 dealer every year since 2010, the first year it was eligible. In addition, Indian Motorcycle Charlotte has won awards for a wide variety of merchandising, advertising and promotion programs.

Very well-known in the American motorcycle industry, both Tim and Lloyd bring exceptional skills and expertise to Indian Motorcycle Charlotte. Mark Moses said “We are absolutely thrilled to have these two icons of our industry become owners of what we started here over ten years ago. Indian Motorcycle Charlotte is already the world’s leading Indian dealer and these two professionals bring their enormous experience, expertise and legendary success in world-class operations as well as jaw-dropping custom Indian® motorcycles with gobs of horsepower. We plan to be known as the ”World’s First, Finest, & Fastest Indian Motorcycle Dealer™”.

Tim Sutherland added “we are very excited to become owners of Indian motorcycle’s flagship dealership. Mark Moses has an impressive reputation in the industry and we see tremendous synergies within this group. Frankly, we expect dramatic growth in the next decade as the world’s premier source for Indian motorcycles.” Sutherland established Coastal Victory in 2004 and developed a national and international reputation for creating award-winning custom Victory Motorcycles (Hot Vic) over the
last 14 years. Coastal was the #3 Victory dealer in the world when Polaris discontinued the brand. Now, Coastal Indian offers the “1901 Customs™” line, showcasing his team’s passionate design and build talents. Coastal Indian recently won Hot Bike magazine’s national custom competition and his Indian Chief-based creation toured as the Hot Bike National Grand Champion.

They are not the first. Indian Motorcycle of Grand Rapids opened in January of 1999. Was a dealer for Gilroy and King’s Mountain before Polaris acquired Indian. Polaris has them as their oldest ‘Legacy’ dealer.

    WTF?
This heritage business is silly when they sell the history and then ignore it.
In the sixties I hung out at a shop in San Diego where new Indians were sold until 1954 and still sold used Indians.
I’m sure there were Indian dealers back in the nineteen-oughts!.

It’s “adjustable history” when they want the company to go back to 1901, it does. When they want it to only include Polaris years, it does. Kind of like a 117″ tape measure, you just pull out what ya need 😉

How can anyone read that ad copy and not realize Indian is doomed? Next thing Polaris will claim to have built Ceasar’s chariot.

I could not be more excited to be working with a pair of the brightest, driven and creative guys in the Indian world today. Each one brings years of experience and expertise and are also some of the most humble and approachable guys in the industry. Their long term view of the brand and industry is inspiring and I am humbled to along on the ride.

The article overlooked a few words about Lloyd Greer. Here ya go:

Lloyd Greer has been building high performance speed machines from an early age and is widely rumored to have gasoline in his blood. From his point of view “we are bringing together three unique and powerful personalities, and our intent is to take these great talents and build something bigger, better and of course, faster. We are all committed to delivering great customer service and plan to capitalize on the Charlotte-NASCAR aura to reflect our bias on performance”. Greer has been building extreme high-performance cars and motorcycles for over two decades with a worldwide customer list. His purpose-built motorcycles have achieved land speed records and destroyed competition at the drag strip. He never met an engine he couldn’t improve and Lloydz Motorworkz continues to offer hundreds of hi-performance Victory parts as well as a growing number of performance options for Indian motorcycles.

The highest quality premium brand, smart guys and dependable performance. The bar has been raised…

Nowhere Larry. After all these years, still loving the brand and can’t imagine being anywhere else. Tim and Lloyd have their shit together and I will do my best to help where I can. Fun and fast times ahead…

best wishes to indian. i agree with the confusion over the history thing. being i was an indian rider as a kid, i think its a bit dishonest to say indian is from 1901 and then this dealer is a first. but i do wish them well. put that chief motor in a scout type bike with mid controls and i might buy one.

The building was a point of pride and a hopeful lifeline during the KM evolution of the Gilroy machines. It was seen by a lot of Gilroy owners, myself included, as a tangible sign that the Powerplus motor was going to live on.

Not my first mistake. Pity too, because the Gilroy and KM models were big motorcycles with lots of leg. I would own a Polaris Indian today except, like HD’s, they are too small to get comfortable on.

What isn’t? My much maligned and underrated Cross Country.

Best wishes for a great business and profitability every year. Not many know the sheer unrelenting pressure of taking the responsibility of running your own business, with the welfare of your family, your employees, and their families all at stake everyday.

To hell with the history opinions. The only history that matters now is the one you make every day, by keeping the doors open with more cash coming in than goes out.

This gives me a reason to buy another Indian after totaling my ‘15 Chieftain. I can leave it and get all the Lloyd’s goodies added and dyno’d Hopefully they will offer “no freight or set up fees” like coastal does, which had me going to them if I decided to go back w Indian. All 3 owners are good people and I look forward to returning to Indian and a great power plant built by Lloyd’s
