sturgissturgisbisThe magic of riding the Black Hills. Incredible roads like Needles Highway, Canyon Road, Spearfish Canyon, the Wildlife Loop, etc… The amazing monuments and breathtaking destinations: Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, The Badlands, Custer and Bear Butte State Parks, Devil’s Tower National Monument…

And of course the madness of downtown Sturgis, the bike shows, the races, the demo rides of all types of bikes, the vendors, the music concerts and the wild parties… And let’s not forget the legendary hospitality of the South Dakotans. Well, if you are going I may see you there. Or stay tuned. I will try to share daily with you as much as I can.

Sturgis, and S.D. sure has changed their tune from the 70′ and 80′ when they did everything they could do to keep us from coming- including providing one port-a-potty in City Park, that we burned in 80′ which they closed the next year. They would advertise in police mags. for off- duty cops to come or to spend your vacation harassing the low life bikers- they could do whatever they wanted to do to the outlaw scum. Even called up the National Guard to intimidate us. The AMA started it when in the early 70′ declared Sturgis off limits to the so called “1%”ers. Most of us at that time were independents, the big clubs went to Deadwood. The word got out that we were not wanted- which made us want to go even more, so we spread the word, and look what happened, they couldn’t stop us no matter what they tried..Brotherhood is a very strong bond that holds us all together.

    That’s odd J.H.

My account of the “fire” at the city park was the burning of a Japanese motorcycle followed up by Chaos and mayhem.

I’m not disputing that a”porta-potty” wasn’t burned, but I remember the “Jap bike” being burned as a way of “making a statement” and sticks out in my mind more so than a crapper being set on fire.

I guess we all see and remember things differently than others.

    On a lighter note:

I went to the Montgomery-Gentry concert (free) at easyriders last night and wasn’t very impressed. Too many people and the sound equipment didn’t sound up to par. But hey, it was free, so I should remind myself to “quit MY bitchen”!

Oh yeah, since this segment is about “riding the hills”….

I don’t hear about people talking about taking the “back road” from Keystone to Hill City by way of the 1880 train (not taking the train, but following the course (back road). I encourage anyone who hasn’t taken this road to do so and enjoy the “laid back” mentality (because it’s so curvy that you have to go REALLY slow) and the absolute beautiful scenery!

If you liked the “old Keystone to Hill City hwy” ride Knucklehead to Panhead, you should start in Hill City, come back to Keystone. Keep going on through old Keystone to the “old Keystone to Rockerville hwy”, turn at “Neck Yoke Road”. It’ll let you off on Hwy 16 straight across the road from Reptile Gardens. Also a very nice ride.
