Inspired by early 20th-century board-track racers, the Sons of Speed races hearken back to a stripped down, wide-open approach to motorcycle riding. The inaugural races are set to be held at New Smyrna Speedway’s half-mile banked racetrack 3939 Florida 44, New Smyrna Beach, FL 32168 on Saturday October 15, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets purchase ($11.54 to $264.74) at Event Brite. 25150119685
Imagined by Billy Lane, the event was originally set to debut during the recent 75th Daytona Bike week but had to be postponed. Racers will use stripped-down bikes with pre-1925 American V-Twin engines cradled in rigid frames with no transmissions and no brakes. Most racers are customizing the bikes’ body parts and accessories, gas and oil tanks, front ends, exhausts, bars, etc.
Racers who confirmed their participation to the inaugural event are.
Billy Lane, riding a 1913 Mack or a 1913 Indian
Rick Petko (Discovery Channel’s American Chopper), riding a 1920 Indian
Xavier Muriel (Buckcherry), riding a 1919 Harley-Davidson
Jay Allen (motorcycle racer/promoter and proprietor, Broken Spoke Saloons), riding a 1913 Thor
Buzz Kanter (publisher, American Iron Magazine), riding a 1915 Harley-Davidson
Shelley Rossmeyer-Pepe (GM, Bruce Rossmeyer’s Harley-Davidson), riding a 1915 Harley-Davidson
Warren Lane (Atomic Metalsmith), riding a 1919 Indian
