New Euro Standard For Guard Rails To Protect Motorcyclists.

bikerbarrierVery good initiative.  The Federation of European Motorcyclists’ Associations (FEMA) just set a European-wide standard for roadside barriers which will take into account bikers’ safety.  Crash-barrier standards have always included impact tests for autobobiles but not motorcycles. The new standard would require road barriers to protect motorcyclists, for example with an additional lower guardrail to prevent riders colliding with upright supporting posts. The standard should be established as early as summer 2010. FEMA has been campaigning for 20 years for this and is feeling very confident about a positive outcome.

Now that would be a real safety improvement. While no one wants to crash, this would give us a better chance of survival. Kudos!

Michigan has just installed miles of cables with post every 10 ft, This type of guard rail system is a death trap for motorcycles.

Alabama is installing “cookie cutter ” guardrails in the median along I 65n and I 85n….They need to be outlawed.

There are some valid reasons for existing guardrail design: Drainage, Snow removal/buildup etc. And it cost manufacturers 1000’s to get new products crash tested. However with the increasing amount of motorcyclists, I think we’ll see more and more of these.

This save Bikers , Governments should do more for the security of all riders.

It’d be interesting to see the cost of this guardrail compaired to the traditional types. And if there’s a patent on it. If so, then it’s proprietary and a “Sole Source” letter is needed in order to get FHWA participating funding which is usually how most State highways and Interstates are paid for.

    Marco,

    RE:
“… Governments should do more for the security of all riders …”

You men like the “motor cycle Role Cage” that was proposed.

Or the “motorcycle Safety belts” ….. ya that was a great idea (NOT!).

Let’s try having the government –do less– for a change.

    Nicker,
I´m from Portugal, and in European Union all bikers try for many years that the every diferent States
and Governments, stablish “norms, standards” for savety barriers.
Hope the Motorcyclists don´t have to pay more “taxs” for this.
Sorry for my poor vocabulary, i don´t know about “motorcycle savety belts” or “motorcycle role cage”
but seems wrong ideas. But “hairbeggs” are a good idea for protection of bikers.
About Governments I have serious doubts about everything what they do for people in the world,
they and big companys around the world rules everything.Hope Obama and UE open their eyes and start move one for a better World.
