Avon Tyres will introduce 13 new 15” to 21” sizes in the popular Cobra tire line designed for the power cruiser, touring and custom market. With all sizes scheduled for availability by the end of September, each new Cobra AV71 and AV72 size will soon replace the corresponding size in the Venom tire line.

The ultra quiet Cobra incorporates sport tire technology for nimble handling, incredible stability and long life making it perfect for touring. No quality 30 inchers?
Before I give my observations of three of the more popular motorcycle tire brands let me say that I don’t have an endorsement deal with Avon.
I have extensive experience with Dunlop, Metzler and Avon tyres. Since I first mounted the Avon Venom 90/90-21 on the front and the Avon Storm II Ultra 170/60-17 on the rear of my Deuce I’ve noticed an improvement in handling and comfort over the other tires. Plus the Avon’s last about as long as the other tires.
Avon motorcycle tires are the ‘cat’s whiskers’ – hisssss….
Seriously though – the Venom used to be one of the best tires around (for American type bikes); bar none.
Pirelli, Metzeler, Michelin, Bridgestone and Continental are good (in some instances very good) – but none (in my experience) suit heavy, high torque, motorcycles better than Avon (by and large); plus Avon covers all the rational sizes (eg the reason you will NOT find motorcycle tires > 23″).
It makes sense to rationalize the the Cobra and Venom into one range – trust the “new” Corba’s will retain the venom…
If you have an American motorcycle (viz cruiser/heavy-tourer) or an American-type custom, then Avon(s) are like ordering a bottle of Merlot in a restaurant – you will never go wrong.
The handful of ground up customs I have built have all used Avon’s and was in fact put together to accommodate Avon sizes. The only alternative I will consider is Michelin – I have them on a ’05 CVO Fat Boy and a ’06 CVO V-Rod. In both cases the bikes took an a complete new character and could be ridden hard without fear (the V-Rod in particular). I would say, before you spend money on ANY aftermarket piece on your American style cruiser/tourer, UPGRADE THE TIRES FIRST.
Forget helmet-legislation, there should rather be TIRE-LEGISLATION, it will reduce accident-rates more significantly…
Tires are possibly the first safety item you must have and with brakes and brains operating life is much more likely to last a bit longer.
Put Cobras on the Fat Bob, got rid of the crazy aquaplaning of the original Dunlop’s with the Russian tractor style tread pattern………..
Had Road Runners on Bonnies way back and they were very good in the rain as well
