French Bikers Protest Over New Laws Aimed At Lowering Air Pollution In Paris

ppTo reduce pollution in the French Capital, a planned law to be effective in 2016 would forbid two-wheeled motorized vehicles registered before 2000 to enter the city of Paris. Yesterday, Sunday February 8, 2015 thousand of bikers swarmed the city streets to protest against this plan to show government officials that are failing to take into account and understand the unique properties of their vehicles: low fuel consumption, reduced size, mobility and shorter journey times, making motorcycles and scooters a solution to the traffic congestion and of value in the fight against pollution.

Planned restrictions by Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo’s city hall include bans on • Passenger cars registered before 31 December 1996 inclusive • Vans and light trucks registered before 30 September 1997. • Coaches, buses and trucks registered before 30 September 2001 inclusive. • And two-wheeled motorized vehicles registered before 2000. Other big cities in Europe wishing have excluded 2-wheel vehicles in their measures to lower air pollution.

Nobody wants their city to look like Bejing but good on the french motorcyclists for forcing the pols to do their homework. An ineffective solution is no solution.

I’ve been to Paris, beautiful city, if they want cleaner air, they should start by limiting diesel cars in the city, I’ve never seen so many stinky diesel cars in one place!

    Sounds like the Japanese solution.
Legislate old technology off the road.
Wouldn’t be surprised to see that tried here in the not so distant future.
Lets hope we have the balls to fight back.

What about cars, buses, and trucks made before 2000? Are they already banned in Paris? They are much bigger polluters than bikes. A handful of buses likely put out more pollution that all the bikes in the city combined during the course of a year.

Unless maybe this isn’t really about pollution at all…

all but one of my vehicles would be screwed if they tried that here… and the other not by much

    Interesting perspective.
One way to control people is to limit their ability to get around.

For another perspective try reading the article and not just the headline…

It is mandated that there is but only one approved comment that one may speak upon noting yet another expansion of government into one’s life. That of course would be “Thank you sir, may I have another”. Prepare yourself to repeat this phrase several times per day for many years to come. Any other response is verboten, per the Federal Dept. of Approved Words, Phrases, and Oral & Written Communication.

Thanks to “Animal House” for this important and useful phrase.
