Motorcycle Engine Catastrophic Failure Prevention

JimsEngine destruction rarely happens suddenly. An early warning can potentially save thousands of dollars in repair costs.

JIMS® new Damage Control Engine Failure Detection System provides an early warning of catastrophic engine failure by detecting ferrous debris within an engine’s oiling system.

Using state of the art technology, the special drain plug monitors ferrous particles in the motor oil.  When the amount of particles in the oil reach a level that could indicate impending trouble, the LED warning light illuminates in the handlebar clamp alerting you to investigate the trouble.

The system includes a complete wiring harness, drain plug sensor, and your choice of black anodize or chrome handlebar LED & clamp housing finishes for 1” or 1-1/4” handlebars.  The MSRP is $195.25 for black kits and $208.00 for chrome.  JIMS Damage Control kit installs easily with no cutting or splicing on 1993 to present FLH Touring models and 1991 to present Dyna Glides.  For more information contact Jims USA or sales@jimsusa.com or call (805)482-6913.

I wonder if they actually did any testing to correlate the light going on with impending engine failure? Seems like regular oil changes and listening for new/unusual noises would be just as good or better than adding this gizmo.

Would be bought by someone who has had engine work done, but doesn’t fuss over their own oil changes or servicing; bit of a fear factor gizmo but I can see it selling

So many new age riders (like most car drivers as well) lack the ability to be aware of one’s machine and its mechanical sounds and feel, added distractions like stereo, crazy lighting, phones and other devices, I can see this as a very smart addition to their bike.

200 bucks vs a many thousand dollar engine build up is pretty cheap insurance for an untuned ear…it depends on the customer/end user I guess..

Like a ‘Check Engine’ for motorcycles … hope this device finds its way into more bikes in the future!

Considering that bikes are touting GPS and LEDs and boom box bags this little guy seems like a winner. It could justify its cost in one event.

OTOH the real benefit is in the peace of mind it can provide when not lit up.

    I’ll take two please.

Hat’s off to companies with innovation.

Our Super Magnetic oil plugs and Black Holes for the oil filter have been applauded for years by customers wanting to see for themselves any collection or accumulation of fine metal fines on our High Temperature Super magnets bathed in the ENGINE, TRANSMISSION and FINAL DRIVE or PRIMARY CHAIN CASE.

Products that help the owners care for their machines and raise consciousness of inner workings are great.

    Cheers,

For years I have attached a small powerful magnet to the bottom outside of my oil filter at every change. Then when the old filter comes off I would drain it, cut in two on my band saw and take a look at the metal frags on the inside of the filter at the magnet location and at the drain plug. This nifty little gizmotron is going to eliminate all that messy fun. Shucks.

Congrats JIMS ! But, I think the cheap China plastic in the Cam Chain Tensioners, is a bigger problem ! The plastic fragments have seized more oil pumps, than anything, that starts a chain reaction to disaster ! Got a Plastic magnet ?

Hey Emmett, Don’t stop with the messy fun ! The JIMS Gizmo won’t pick-up aluminum, brass, plastic, etc. It could set off all sorts of false alarms. And, what do you do, when that ring of red lites comes on, stop, pullover, change your oil on the side of the road ? Is it like the reserve on your fuel tank, can I make it home ?
I believe Magnet Man has a Great product ! The H-D drain plug magnets are useless. I think every repair shop, should cut open your dirty oil filter, show you, what”s inside, not just tell you , “it looked OK”, those little bits of orange or white plastic, is your Cam Chain Tensioner, imploding ! Have you ever found anything BAD ?

This Device is an aid in most types of metals that reduce Engine Life. When the light goes of , yes it is like a Check Engine light. You dot rush home when the Check Engine Light goes on in your Vehicle! At the most you pull over to check the Fluid Levels, THEN when you get time you take it to a Mechanic. If you want 99% of Accuracy in your engines Oil for $25 you do an Oil Analysis and $25 for the Primary and the results take 2-3 days and you will be surprised as the different metals in your Vehicle. this Test also tell you when the different metals have become dangerous. This test would be safe to have done every 10,000 miles. All Marine Engine Surveyors have them performed and all Airplanes have their Fluids analyzed. This Process is like having the best Engine Mechanic that can find Problems before they happen, and pay him $50 for that privilege of having him read your Motor. Bottom line is that Gizmo is worth installing for $200 out the door?

Am guessing it can only tell if there is steel floating in your oil. Dough it can detect plastic or bronze particles
Dough they blew up a motor to find out if it works.

As far as the magnet it doesn’t really do any good and can’t tell you if certain parts of the motor is failing.

Either way it none of them will tell you the cam shoes are falling a part

I think it’s a pretty smart thing actually. If you can prevent engine failure due to metal residue, why not grab the extra insurance? I’m sure there will be cheaper versions soon too.

@ Emmett …. The magnet on the oil filter is a trick passed on by guys even older than me. I am going to stick with it …. Oh, and cheap too!! I have been using the same magnet for 20 years now.

Most large aircraft engines have chip detectors. Should be standard equipment on HD’s. ..Z
