2015 US Motorcycle Retail Sales Up 6% Through September

HD-Dealership1The Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC) reported US retail motorcycle sales for the 3rd quarter 2015. Number of sold motorcycles include those reported by all MIC member manufacturers: BMW, Can-Am, Ducati, Harley-Davidson, Honda, Kawasaki, KTM, the Piaggio Group, Suzuki, Triumph, Victory,, and Yamaha. So, it includes On and Off-Highway motorcycles, Dual and Scooters. Total for year 2015 through September is 413,128 units, 18,488 more than were sold for same period 2014. Sales for last September were 6% higher than same month last year. All categories of motorcycles have higher sales except Scooters whose sales saw a decline for September and from January (see chart below)

    Good news is good news. But it means that the Harley’s 3rd quarter results are even worse than thought. Overall the number of units sold increases, but Harley sells less and less in percentage of the overall market. HD has a BIG problem.
