Late-Model Indian Motorcycles Recalled For Fire Risk Due To Excessive Exhaust Temperature

indian-springfield-red-studio-1The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)filed on June 17 a report regarding elevated exhaust temperatures on late model Indian motorcycles that may result in an increased risk of fire. In the event of an engine misfire, unburned fuel may pass through parts of the exhaust system, raising the exhaust temperatures.

The number of motorcycles potentially affected is 18,367. They are models 2014-2016, Chief Classic, Dark Horse, Chieftain, Roadmaster, Vintage and Chieftain Dark Horse motorcycles manufactured from April 15, 2013, to June 16, 2015. Indian will notify owners, and dealers will update the engine control module (ECM) software, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in July 2016. Owners may contact Indian customer service at 1-877-204-3697. Indian’s number for this recall is I-16-02.

When are they going to start recalling Harley’s for excessive heat? My wife has a 2015 Freewheeler that burns her legs whenever she rides! She wears thick jeans and boots. I have taken the bike back to the dealer several times only to be told that it’s running fine. They offered to install a new exhaust and tuner for over $2500. So she spent over $25,000 for a bike she can’t ride comfortably. What a pile of crap!

    Nice one Hillbilly Jim !!!!
But none of the brands are perfect & they all have recalls
At least this one seems easy enough to fix
Aftermarket exhaust & a fuel mgmt system would do it I think
& yes, it is the EPA’s fault !!!! “Expletive” Them !!!!
