Orange County Choppers Business Plans

Orange County Choppers: from rags to riches through a TV hit. As Paul Teutul Sr states “we’re in a wave of opportunities". So, OCC takes an aggressive stance and wants to expand as much as possible. Next month they plan to open an 11,500-square-foot retail store in the Palisades Center in West Nyack, N.Y. This mall store will share its space with a restaurant partner, Rub BBQ, run by Paul Kirk, the self-styled "Kansas City Baron of Barbecue" – which has already made a mark in Manhattan with its West 23rd Street outpost. The Newburgh store will sell the OCC’s mass-produced line of motorcycles which will sell for $30,000 up to $65,000. By next winter they intend to move into a 100,000-square-foot world headquarters in Newburgh, N.Y. These headquarters will include a 32,000-square-foot store where they will sell motorcycles, parts, accessories and a new private line of apparel, including denim and leather jackets and assorted items from more than 70 licensees bearing the company’s logo ranging in price from $10 to $300. Other expansion plans include going global by offering a mass produced line of bikes through motorcycle dealers around the world. .

I’ll admit Econ was not my strong suit in college. So someone is going to have to explain the OCC business case (?).

    Well Ok,
…accessories and a new private line of apparel, including denim and leather jackets and assorted items…”

for a clothing store, the supply chain is easier than big ticket manufacturing. Asian cut & sew shops, some shipping. Basically, big margins, low overhead, so the down side is fairly minimal. It the same with NASCAR shirts, mugs, and key chains.

But, in a market where HD dealers can’t move product, to open a
store for “… OCC’s mass-produced line of motorcycles which will sell for $30,000 up to $65,000….”………….?????

When I read of O.C.C. expansion plans, to this extent, it was a surprise. The “whole chopper thing” is slowly waning. And as mentioned, it looks like a head on clash with H.D.. And plans to “mass produce’ bikes lead to the question of quallity control and the chance of a “recall.”
I wish O.C.C. well in their business venture. They are going to play in the area of a niche market, which depends upon expendable income, continual developemnt of its product to meet the pervailing winds of the niche market, fluid lines of credit and concurring interest rates, and, most important, the ability to keep your product within the news and exposure.

I have always said If You Can Not Say Something Nice About Some One Do Not Say Any Thing.
I guess that is all I have to say.

They are about 3 years behind the curve. Like watching a train wreck about to happen.

  5. 5 Marc Aug 22nd, 2007 at 11:58 am

I think Curt is 100% correct. The weak U.S. economy and the slowing of demand for “production” custom choppers as well as HD’s line-up of bikes is going to make this into a very difficult situation for them……fast.

  6. 6 Brad Aug 22nd, 2007 at 12:07 pm

I agree. It’s way too late. They made a lot of money with luck. They are going to lose it because all these plans are just an ego trip in a market which doesn’t like or need their bikes

  7. 7 emily Aug 22nd, 2007 at 10:50 pm

Good luck to The Three Stooges of the custom motorcycle world.
have not watched show in awhile but anytime they actually put an engine together IT DID NOT RUN and they had to get outside help to run it, mechanics they are not. This should be interesting to see develop.
At least they are spreading their money around in the community.

  8. 8 Bill Aug 24th, 2007 at 12:17 am

Good luck there going to need it. As an ex Harley dealer who sold out last year after 31 years in the buisness we saw the slowing US market and I think that OCC is to late.

    Rogue:

Sweetle….. & my comments have nothing to do with “being nice.” We’re only trying to work out the business case for a manufacturing venture that’s being proposed.

Trust me dude, i could have said a lot of impolite things about a TV show that manages to make the activity, that i’ve loved and taken pride in for more than 50 years, look like it’s only undertaken and followed by illiterate clowns.

And before someone tells me about all the money their making… le-me say this: Heidi Fleis also made a hell of a lot of money (doing all kinds of disgusting things with other people’s genitalia). So, NO… i’m not interested in following either of their “business plans”

    OCC……………..
last time i saw show, i actualy calculated how little time they showed working on bike…..20 minutes, mind u its a one hour show.

rest of the shit was mikey and the family.

as far as the production goes,i fully agreed with my other mates who commented that they are late and they are not mechanics…stuff like that.

You guys are the fools not the Occ guys. They are getting paid!! Call them what you will but they are a true American sucess story. Take a look at there ratings and tell me who’s behind the trends

  12. 12 scott Aug 26th, 2007 at 11:45 pm

Isn’t there a vast difference between television and reality? ratings in TV land don’t make you a smart business man or even a bike builder. Any monkey can put together a bike out of a box like they do. Trends? My God if their bikes are the future of motorcycling I’m getting the hell out of Dodge. The long and short of it.. being in the right place at the right time doesn’t necessarily make you smart or talented… just lucky.

  13. 13 Nicker Aug 27th, 2007 at 1:38 am

    Yo, wake….

    RE:
“…You guys are the fools not the Occ guys…”

No, i doube any of us have smashed a perfectly good SUV trying to rearrange the inside of their shop. Or would any of us take a customers product (a guitar) and smash it up to demonstrate our qualifications as custom builders.

    RE:
    “…They are getting paid!!…”

Apparently you didn’t get my previous point. Try reading it again.

    RE:
    “…Call them what you will…”

    OK, ho w about “Pointless”

    RE:
    “…they are a true American success story…”

Only if you also consider Heidi Fleis a success.
Sorry dude, Trading Rim-jobs for money isn’t my idea of a “success story” regardless of how much money is involved.

    RE:
“…Take a look at there [their] ratings and tell me who’s behind the trends…”

Look around you, “the trend” has been increasingly populated by Beer-morons, since the first screening of “Easy Rider.”

If you can’t reconcle these issues, then one of us is in the wrong blog… (it could be me…?)… i’m sure i’ll hear about it one way or another.

  14. 14 Wake up fools Aug 27th, 2007 at 8:32 am

    Nicker,
    Are you stupid?
“trading rim jobs for money”.thats exactly what they do. get over yourself. if the public did not like them they wouldnt be successful. Why must people like you allways knock everything down. You know better then everyone else. Its sound like pure jealousy. the only thing that needs to be reconciled is you with yourself
    good luck

  15. 15 Patrick Aug 27th, 2007 at 8:47 am

“Wake Up Fools”, you are the fool. The success of OCC is not with bikers. OCC is a reality show for non bikers. When OCC will talk to real bikers to sell their junk bikes and parts, nobody is going to listen. The motorcycle industry has no or little respect for them. So, they will fail

  16. 16 Rodney Adkins Aug 27th, 2007 at 9:22 am

    To all,

If you knew what I know you’d pay close attention to the OCC they are about to get really paid.

  17. 17 Nicker Aug 28th, 2007 at 1:12 am

    Hay Wake up;

Are you sure rim-jobs “for money is exactly what they do”….????

But then, that could explain a lot.

Seriously, you need to get a friend to explain rim-jobs.

Talk about “stupid,” Dude, I about puked i was laughing so hard.

    -the nicker-

  18. 18 Nicker is a fool Aug 28th, 2007 at 9:14 am

    Nicker,
I’m sure you have many friends who know about rim jobs. Its clear you have a working knowledge. Have you been selling them for a while now? Its know wonder your puking…is it hard to get that taste out of your mouth? Now I’m laughing….

  19. 19 Nicker Aug 29th, 2007 at 1:59 am

    Ha…:-)
So, some one finally clued you in, did they….?…:-)

Let me explain something very simple to you:
“Knowing” about stuff is what life is all about. That way you don’t have to actually try it to “know” it’s not a good idea. You got that?

In the immortal words of Dean Wormer (Animal House) “Fat, Drunk & Stupid is no way to go through life son.”

Smarten up boy! Make your Mother proud!

    -BTW- Rodney

Is that “…about to get really paid…”
    all about some celebrity backing…???

    Just wondering

  21. 21 Rodney Adkins Aug 29th, 2007 at 8:43 am

No they are about to go mainstream with a product that has drawn lots of interest (hint: Cyril was the first to write about it) and sales are going through the roof. Just ask Jay Leno.

  22. 22 madpuppy Aug 29th, 2007 at 9:32 am

    I must agree with Rogue!.

  23. 23 Nicker Aug 29th, 2007 at 11:40 pm

    Rodney

    New product, Cool..!
    And Cyril already mentioned it….?
Guess i flunked that pop quiz.
    Wonder what it could be.

    I don’t know why you’re all bitchin,I think it’s a great series.
Got my bike lience and my first harley because of the series.
Can’t wait till they come to europe with their line of bikes.
I oouldn’t wish a better family more success in the world then the Teutels
They have brought so much joy and inspiration to all that they touch.
maybe you whiners should begin with a honda 50,and work youself up to real men.
Get rid of the tour de france helmets.

    Long live the american dream,.

    long live occ.

  25. 25 jaul ego Jan 29th, 2010 at 2:40 am

    1. I watch the show because of the boys–Mikey and paul jr.

    2. The bikes they produce are crap–meaning the average person could put together a Kit bike.

    3. I really don’t see how OCC clothes have become a fashion statement.

    4. The luckiest bike shop in the world.

    5. I honestly wonder how Paul Senior really made his money? I have a feeling he didn’t
just fall into it. Yea, I know about the oldest boy and the other family business–I just
    doubt it’s legit?
