Bright Idea. Stainless Steel Gas Tank.

Of course I worked on steel and aluminum gas tanks, but never on a stainless steel one. So, I am very interested to try this new one. Big advantage, like with aluminum, is that you will never get rust inside your gas tank (no rust remover, no messy sealer to apply before you paint it) and also the possibility to create special effects like keeping it as it (lightly polished natural look), but also painting part of it (the same way you paint a steel gas tank), but keeping some places of the stainless steel unpainted. And yes, you can clear coat directly on stainless. For now, there is only one model available. Overall length : 22.24”, Tunnel length : 19.21, Seat pocket length : 3.03”, Tunnel width : 3.48”, Overall width : 14.00, Height : 9.3”. The tank is mounted to the frame using the supplied brackets and rubber grommets fitting recessed inside the gas tank to isolate it from vibrations and to give a nice flush look to your mounting sustem. You need to order through a Dealer because Kustomwerks doesn’t sell direct retail.

Cyril, check this guy out in Scotland too ( We’d been intro’d to him a few months ago and his tanks are all stainless and hand made. Pretty sweet and can’t wait to get our hands on one. Unfortunately you can only call or snail mail him as he doesn’t take emails.

Wow that’s a nice piece — it would be nice to fabricate a fuel and oil tank from SS. Welding SS can be tricky, and you want to make sure you set your TIG torch up with a real efficient gas lens to maximize shield gas coverage, and minimize weld discolorization and reduce clean up time. Also by using an insulated backing tape the inside of the weld would be as smooth and clean as the outside. . .

When tig welding the stainless tank run a argon purge line inside the tank. That will prevent any oxidation from occuring. If the fit up is good there should be no clean up.
