The plea hearing of this Wednesday morning at 8.45 am ended up with the Judge giving Billy Lane’s attorneys and the State prosecutor at least 1 more week to iron out the details of the written version of the verbal agreement. Attorneys will notify the court of their progress during a docket hearing set for 9 a.m. April 14, and possibly enter the plea that day. If not, the case will be set for trial.
The two parties are trying to come to an agreement on mitigating facts that the defense believes applies to Billy’s case. “Mitigators” are, in legalese, facts related to the defendant’s background that might entitle him or her to have sentencing guidelines lowered (photo Florida Today).
