This year the Horse Backstreet Choppers Sturgis Bike Show has a new venue, “The Full Throttle Saloon”. On August 3rd the magazine will recognize all hard-core, garage-built backstreet choppers, and owners/builders will have a chance to win an Evil Engineering Belt Drive or Baker Drivetrain 6 speed transmission and thousands of dollars in other door prizes. You have no excuse to not participate because this year there is no registration or entry fee. Guest judges are Billy Lane of Choppers Inc., Paul Cox of Paul Cox Industries, Bill Dodge of Bling’s Cycles, Eric Gorges of Voodoo Choppers, Athena “Chickie” Ransom of Vagabond Choppers, Keino Sasaki of Keino Cycles, Chuck Palumbo of C P Kustoms, Roadside Marty and Jeff Cochran of Sucker Punch Sally’s. I think if someone claims to be a custom chopper builder, they need to show proof that they built and SOLD at least 3 “custom” bikes in the year prior, and maybe prove that these bikes are still on the road too. If these “contest” organizers use that as a formula, then I think we/they could get at least one or two more good judges.
The industry is starting to take a bad turn because of the bullshitters and con-artists claiming to build custom bikes, and it’s the really good reputable “real” custom builders who are being screwed.
