Fast Motorcycle Industry News

1- New rumors on Wall Street that private equity firms are eying Harley-Davidson as a takeover target. Last time such rumors surfaced was on March 16, 2010 when private equity firm KKR was named as being interested in buying the company. A growing confidence in a US recovery is feeding a frenzy of many unsubstantiated rumors creating spikes in the price of many companies. Harley stock (HOG) closed yesterday Thursday June 10, 2010 at $26.57.

2- Ex Billy Lane’s Choppers Inc. shop in Melbourne, Florida has been leased by the Parker Brothers (Marc & Shanon) where they will will build and sell custom motorcycles. You remember that the duo built the Bad Pod Motorcycle inspired by the “Dark Knight” Batman movie. While trying to sell this bike for $100,000 on eBay the auction had to be cancelled for copyright violation of a movie image belonging to the film studio. Those still interested to buy the Bad Pod can now buy one of the 5000 raffle tickets sold $20,00 each 3- Cash flow strapped Big Dog Motorcycles is building new bikes only when firm orders are received and recalls former workers as needed for temporary assignments. 4- Harley-Davidson cancelled its annual Kansas Plant Open House because of restructuring currently going on, with the site worrying it would not have the resources to put towards a quality event. The company will determine either later this year or next year if it will host an open house next year.

Rumors many times are created for different purposes.[ regardless of the company ] If it increases the price of a stock then bingo, Only / usually no one steps forward with any credibility.
The simple fact rumors are no more than what they suggest, Rumors untill something concrete surfaces.

I can’t imagine anyone buying Harley Davidson. The current line up is just too dated and it would take 100’s of millions for Harley to design and build a modern motorcycle. The younger buyers are not interested in the heavy cruiser and Harley current market – the baby boomers – are getting out of motorcycles. Harley is doomed and the current management should be fired for dumping Buell. Buell had just dumped the boat anchor Harley v-twin in favor of the Rotax motor. I am in my late 20’s and I would not be caught dead on any Harley and I know of no one in my age group that is interested in a Harley. We like to make fun of Harleys – mostly the moron who ride them with there loud exhaust. I guess that is the only way they can make themselves believe they have some kind of hot motorcycle. Make sound fast anyway.

Skipper, Skipper, Skipper – you will live to regret your naive and impetuous statement that “Harley is doomed” and maybe, just maybe, once you have scraped the egg from your face you will be a little wiser. The Motor Company’s death has been forecast many times over the past hundred plus years and, great American company that it is, it has survived and prospered. And will continue to do so. As for “making fun of Harleys”- grow up sonny boy, grow up.

Skippy, Harley doesn’t want their motorcycles being seen ridden by weenies like you anyway.

Make fun of Skippy all you want, but he brings up some points the MoCo needs to address. Many folks will gravitate to the Harley Cruisers as they age and want something slower and comfy for the long haul, but there seem to be less and young’uns caring much about Harleys like in the ’70s when I was his age. harley needs a more complete line or at least something competitive and I don’t mean another diatribe on cutting mfg costs 😉
