Big Rallies like Sturgis are full of charity events and I want to mention this one called “Kids & Chrome” because I think it was very creatively conceived with the sponsoring of Schwinn Bicycles, of the Legendary Buffalo Chip and the participation of Pee Wee Herman (Paul Reubens) and of Lorenzo Lamas (Lamas Cycles). Schwinn had donated 60 new bicycles and helmets to the Kids & Chrome Foundation to benefit the Black Hills Children Home Society.
These bicycles arrived unassembled in boxes at the Buffalo Chip warehouse. and were assembled by professional builders who volunteered for the task. In addition 4 custom builders customized 4 adult size bicycles on the Pee-Wee Herman fictional comic character, with Paul Reubens picking one to use on his new New-York Broadway Show to debut November 11th, one to auction immediately on eBay, and 2 others auctioned later.
I must say that these 4 custom motorcycles were of exceptional quality, incorporated amazing “Pee-wee” ideas and involved a lot of fabrication work. Front of the crowd, each builder had to “explain” his work to Paul Rubens who chose the one built by frame and motorcycle builder Steve “Brew” Garn and named “Pee-Wee America” because inspired by the famous motorcycle of the Easy Rider movie.
I agreed with this choice and Paul Rubens added that his career was launched by the publicist of Dennis Hopper with who he was friend, and that the bike was also a tribute to the actor who passed a few weeks ago. Two tickets to the opening nights of the Pee-Wee Herman Show at the Broodway Sondheim Theater on November 11th & 12th were also auctioned for $1800 & $1500. All the children bicycles and proceeds of the Kids And Chrome Charity go to help battered and abused children of the Black Hills. Ted Sands from Performance Machine was the master of pee-wee-ceremony.
