Short History. In 1621, the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians shared an autumn harvest feast that is acknowledged today as one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies.
For more than two centuries, days of thanksgiving were celebrated by individual colonies and states.
It wasn’t until 1863, in the midst of the Civil War, that President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day to be held each November.
Recently I received a parrot as a gift.
The parrot had a bad attitude and an even worse vocabulary.
Every word out of the bird’s mouth was rude, obnoxious and laced with profanity.
I tried and tried to change the bird’s attitude by consistently
saying only polite words, playing soft music and anything else I could
think of to “clean up” the bird’s vocabulary.
Finally, I was fed up and I yelled at the parrot.
The parrot yelled back.
I shook the parrot and the parrot got angrier and even more rude.
So, in desperation, I threw up my hands, grabbed the bird and
put him in the freezer.
For a few minutes the parrot squawked and kicked and screamed.
Then suddenly there was total quiet. Not a peep was heard for over a minute.
Fearing that I’d hurt the parrot, I quickly opened the door to the freezer.
The parrot calmly stepped out onto my outstretched arms and said
“I believe I may have offended you with my rude language and
action s.
I’m sincerely remorseful for my inappropriate transgressions and
I fully intend to do everything I can to correct my rude and
unforgivable behavior.”
I was stunned at the change in the bird’s attitude.
As I was about to ask the parrot what had made such a dramatic change in his behavior, the bird continued,
“May I ask what the turkey did?”
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
Actually, from the history I can find, Thanksgiving has little to do with Indians and pilgrims. There was a feast between the two which was simply a meeting. The practice wasnt repeated until several years later when the pilgrims had a similar feast to proclaim victory over the indians who had essentially become seen as a nuisance.
However in 1789 George Washington wrote the first Thanksgiving Proclamation. “Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the Providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor; and whereas both houses of congress have, by their joint commitee, requested me to recommend to the people of the United states a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observrd by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness:”
……wait a minute, I thought we weren’t a Christian nation?
God Bless and happy Turkeyday to you Cyril….Martin
