Fast Motorcycle Industry News

1- NFL Motorcycle Helmets. Andy Brogden is persistent. He banged on the doors of the National Football League for three years until he got a five-year, exclusive contract to produce motorcycle and kids’ bicycle helmets (half and three-quarters) emblazoned with the NFL team logos. The NFL promised to order 45,000 units at a time and have the helmets in stores 60 days after that. So, the merchandise is expected to arrive in stores this spring. The helmets will be available in stores carrying motorcycle apparel, on the official NFL website, in football stadiums and on TV and at Toys R Us for kids helmets. The bad news. These helmets will be produced in China to keep the retail price as low as possible. China? The NFL should check very closely that the yellow Packers helmet is a true Packers yellow, and that the burgundy Redskins helmet is Redskins burgundy…

2-Breakfast With Buell At Daytona Bike Week. Erik Buell will be the featured guest at Hall Of Fame annual Breakfast at Daytona fundraiser set for the Friday of Bike Week, March 11, at an all-new location inside the Daytona 500 Club in the infield of Daytona International Speedway. Buell, a Hall of Famer, will take the stage to talk about motorcycles, his years running his company and what the future holds for one of America’s most free-thinking bike builders. The event also includes a silent auction of unique items related to the Hall of Fame, and an autograph session with Buell and other Motorcycle Hall of Famers.

3- Harley-Davidson, Inc. Declares Dividend. Harley-Davidson, Inc. (NYSE: HOG) announced today that its Board of Directors approved a cash dividend of $0.10 per share for the first quarter of 2011. The dividend is payable March 4, 2011 to the holders of record of the Company’s common stock on February 22, 2011.

4- Harley-Davidson New Models Launch. It looks like it is the last year that Harley-Davidsons new models launch will be in Jul. I hear that starting in year 2012 HD will delay launch to mid to late August. To coincide with Sturgis Bike Week or after? To follow…

5- Can-Am Vehivles Recall. TBombardier Recreational Products Inc., maker of three-wheel motorcycles and four-wheel all-terrain vehicles under the Can-Am brand name, is recalling certain Spyder RT SM5 models of its three-wheel motorcycles from the 2011 model year to fix a possible problem with their transmissions. When the rider is downshifting, it is possible to inadvertently engage reverse without depressing the reverse button. The potentially dangerous condition stems from a defective reverse actuator cable, the company said in documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. If the transmission shifts into reverse while the vehicle is moving forward, the rear wheel could lock and cause the engine to stall. If this happens while vehicle is stopped or moving forward slowly, the vehicle could back up unexpectedly, possibly causing a crash.

6- Harley-Davidson At The 70th Daytona Bike Week.  Harley-Davidson will be there in 2 locations. At the Speedway with 75 demo bikes and at the Riverfront Park on Beach Street focusing on custom Harleys, accessories and clothing. On Beach Street, motorcycle owners are invited to enter their Harley-Davidson motorcycles in an all-new H-D1 Custom Bike Showcase presented by Best Western. Winners will be selected by random daily drawings for a total of eight winners who each receive two nights lodging at a Best Western hotel and an H-D gift card. Also a Women’s Area daily and the 4th Annual Harley-Davidson MDA Women’s Ride Daytona, Tuesday, March 8. Harley-Davidson will also be present at Black Bike Week on Mary McLeod Bethune Boulevard in Daytona Beach March 10-12.

Aw gee, imagine my disappointment that I won’t see the newest paint schemes from Harley until the first weekend in August instead of the last weekend in July.

The Pros & Cons of a California Motorcycle Carbon Tax – for limited mileage, emissions exempt kit bikes (based on year/model of replication).
Australian Library of Parliament – Nov. 19, 2010
    ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
Carbon taxes have been said to have the following advantages:

    *
They put a limit on the costs of emissions reduction.
    *
    They can be implemented quickly.
    *
They are predictable in their costs. Relatively stable price signals can help business and consumers plan energy spending and provide greater certainty for investments in energy efficiency that have large initial costs.
    *
They are a permanent incentive to reduce emissions. The price of pollutants does not change, as with the operation of a market-based emission trading system.
    *
They are not susceptible to ‘strategic behaviour’ by firms and non-government organisations that distort any market for trading emissions—such as purchasing a large number of permits and reselling them later at a profit or viewing auction permits in a cap-and-trade system as a right to pollute.
    *
They are economically efficient in that they are transparent, simple and can have a wide coverage.
    *
They can be implemented across a wide variety of economies and therefore are a suitable instrument for coordinated international action on reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
    *
They are a revenue source. They could result in other taxes being reduced, or the proceeds of the carbon tax could be redirected to those most affected to ensure that the introduction of a carbon tax remains revenue neutral.

For these reasons a number of prominent economists support the introduction of such taxes. However, carbon taxes as a means of controlling greenhouse gas emissions also have some disadvantages:

    * There are no guarantees that emissions will decline if consumption of the goods and services that produce carbon emissions remains unresponsive to price increases.
    * The level at which the tax is set to produce the best outcomes cannot be known in advance. Thus the tax may have to go through several changes before having the desired effect. This makes it politically vulnerable.
    * Where such taxes have been implemented (mainly in Europe) lobby groups have been successful in gaining exemptions for highly affected industries. This reduces the effectiveness of these taxes.
    * If the tax is set at too high a level, activities that are particularly vulnerable to it may relocate to a location that does not have such imposts.
    * To date it has not received much support as the internationally preferred method of controlling greenhouse gas emissions. To date the international community appears to prefer the cap-and-trade approach.
    * They are potentially regressive, with the impact of a flat carbon tax potentially highest on the lowest income households. This effect is offset by the higher consumption of wealthier households, that is, as they consume relatively more energy than low income households they may be paying a higher rate of tax.
    * It is a tax, and therefore politically unpopular by its very nature.
