Harley-Davidson Celebrates Republic Of China Taiwan Centennial With 100 Motorcycles Featuring Chinese Characters

You could call my article the Hog meets with the Dragon…

For the 1st time in its history Harley-Davidson is producing 100 bikes featuring Chinese characters on paint and chrome meaning “Harley” and “Peace”. The occasion? The celebration of the Republic Of China (Taiwan) 100th Anniversary.

The ROC was established in 1911, replacing the Qing Dynasty and ending over 2,000 years of imperial rule in China to become the oldest surviving republic in East Asia. Selling Harley-Davidson motorcycles in China is still at the take off stage, but the Milwaukee company doesn’t miss an opportunity to promote culture fusion between West and East. The 100 limited edition Harleys have a special serial number that symbolizes its uniqueness celebration

With so many HD parts and clothes made in the PRC and the desire to move into that market, I find it odd they are openly celebrating the RoC centennial. I am wondering if they spin it a bit different in the PRC, One china and all that. Besides, as the RoC was established in 1912, not 1911, it seems just plain odd.

Most big businesses dealing with both go out of their way to tiptoe around the regional politics. I would be interested in seeing the original HD press release.

This right here just goes to show people that the shot callers at HD don’t think that their core base customers care if HD uses American parts or Chinese parts to build these bikes. I for one do care and the closer HD gets to China, the further away my loyalty to their brand becomes. It is a damn shame that companies in this country put their short term profits above our countries economy. A large percentage of the problems we have today with our economy are a direct cause of companies using parts made in China and Taiwan to assemble their product here and claim they are American. I personally think our country should tax the shit out of any and all items entering this country from other countries. This would accomplish two things. It would help raise needed tax money plus it would encourage companies to come back to the states and manufacture their products here, and it would also encourage companies like HD to purchase their parts from American manufactures instead of buying those Chinese and Taiwan parts, which by the way generates more tax money from the workers jobs that would create as well. But then the same result could happen with out any government help if people would just stop buying all this Chinese crap to begin with. But for some reason most people either don’t care about their children’s futures and their ability to have good paying jobs in that future or they just don’t understand that when you buy a product made in other countries because it is cheaper you are taking an Americans job and soon that job will be your if we don’t wake up. I belief it was President Reagan that said no one believes it is a recession until their brother in law is out of work, it is a depression when they are out of work, and it will only be a recovery when the politicians that caused this are out of work. People please wake up we need to vote out all of our politicians
every one of them or at minimum 90% of them are corrupt and the balance are just plain blind to our problems as a nation. But if we all send a very strong message with our votes things will change and they will change very fast. We need to remember these polititions are our survents not the other way around.
And as for HD and their china deal. I hope the chinese buy a lot of bikes because I will not buy another one until they really are American bikes again if they ever will be.

Jeff; I am just curious as to what you think of your good governor Rick Perry and his plan to give illegals access to free college in your home state? He has also stated he does not beleive Texas needs to build any fence or wall to stop the flow of illegals coming in thru Texas even though more come thru Texas than any other state. I wonder if that position is a sign of him beleiving he needs the mexican vote to win or if he really is that stupid. I know you never shy away from giving an honest opinion. I personally beleive all these politition need to go, we should vote them all out and start over, let those bastards know that we have all had enough of this bullshit of selling our futures to the highest bidders.

No surprise especially in Taiwan. HD has been having accessories made in Taiwan for 20 plus years. There are some very very wealthy factory owners in Taiwan that are so because of the HD business they receive. You will most likely see many of these special edition bikes purchased and sitting in their lobbies or office.

    JMO,

As you know, and as you can see with the pictures of the Governor at Desperado on our website, the Governor is a friend of mine so I am slightly one sided in this. I truly believe that Rick Perry is the second coming, if there is such a thing, of Ronald Reagan. In my opinion Mitt Romney is nothing more than “Obama Lite”. Perry is a straight shooter that is pro American …. He is a man’s man and not afraid to stand for what he believes and damn sure will not be bending at the waste or kissing the feet of other world leaders.

Giving Illegal’s free college tuition in Texas …. WRONG. First these are children of illegal aliens who were brought to this country by no fault of their own. Secondly, these students must be working toward American citizenship, with no criminal history and be enrolled in school. Finally the law ALLOWS these kids to attend state institutions of higher learning at the “in state tuition rates” …. there is no free ride for these kids to attend college; it simply allows them to enroll and pay in state tuition rates …. only. This law passed in Texas with only 4 resending votes in Congress which was way more than a 2/3rds majority needed to override a Veto if the Governor had chosen to do so.

I believe that this law stemmed from the idea that these kids are better off for Texas if they are learning something other than becoming Gang Bangers in the Latino communities … and I agree.

As for the Governor saying he does not believe we need to build a fence at the border …. As Ron Paul has alluded to, a fence can work in two directions, one to keep people out and one to keep people in. I believe the Governors position is that he believes we should have Federal boots on the ground in Texas to work the border instead of Texas paying the tab for the Feds lack of law enforcement. Personally I don’t believe in a fence either … too easy to go over or under especially when we have roughly 1200 miles of border in Texas. I would rather see us develop hunting season for illegal’s crossing the border …. send a few bodies floating downstream and the illegals might think twice about crossing into this country. That should get some crap going!

One more thing, while I am on the subject, then I have to get back to the shop as we are getting ready to head to Panama City Beach next week for Thunder Beach (you coming?). I believe that we are way too easy of those we catch coming into this country illegally, it is nothing more than a catch and release system, with no penalty. That should change! If we catch them we should place them in a “work camp” for a period of time until they work off the cost of us catching and housing them. We do that to our own citizens who break our laws by making those individuals work in prison, so why not the illegal’s? That should get the bleeding heart liberals going!

    Ok there you have it!

    Over & Out,

    Jeff

Thanks for the good info on the tuition issue Jeff.

As for the Peoples Republic of Harley Davidson; One more reason I will never buy another HD.

As for the border; declare it a military training zone for 5 miles on either side. Then let our military have fun. Big signs that say enter at your own risk. About one week later we will have no border crossing problems.

WOW fear and loathing Texas style. Jeff, Bill and the rest of the american taliban patrolling the border, sounds like great idea – NOT
If you believe HD could ever be 100% us built then you also believe in fairies at the bottom of the garden (or a man in the sky who cares about you), its called a global economy where countries trade with each other – wingnuts! – thats why HD’s are exported, because they use some imported parts. WOW

Sad to see this. I get it that Harley wants a piece of that China consumer pie but it’s a shame they go to such lengths to celebrate a COMMUNIST/Socialist country that oppresses it’s people and lacks the same basic freedoms we have here.

Anyone want to wager that before long there is an HD factory in China ?? It is inevitable folks !! HD like any public company must constantly pursue more sales and higher profits. Does not matter what they did last week ,only what they will do this week. That is the share holders mentality and HD MUST tow that line or fail

  21. 21 rob Sep 24th, 2011 at 10:48 am

    F China!

  22. 22 Doc Robinson Sep 24th, 2011 at 5:12 pm

You say that Rob but have you ever considered how many Chinese made you own. Among them my be things like computers, hard drives, cameras, camera cards, video cameras, camera accessories, TVs, air conditioners, cell phones, H-D t-shirts, jackets and other clothing, power tools, many of which are Japanese brands but are made in China, knives, hunting equipment – the list is indeed long for most people. And the Chinese made cars and motorcycles are selling in ever growing numbers in the good ol’ USA, soon to be known world wide as ‘Little China’ the way things are going, including the fact that China owns trillions of US debt. A US trillion by the way, has 12 zeroes. That’s 1,000,000,000,000. That’s a MILLION MILLION, which I bring up as many people do not seem to know that the US trillion is different to other countries. In these other countries, a billion (bi meaning two) has twice as many zeros as a million, and a trillion (tri meaning three) has three times as many zeros as a million, etc. But the American system is way more scary. Think about it next time the term trillion slides of a politicians lips, Democrat or Republican, and the term slides off way too often.

  24. 24 mcyclhound Sep 25th, 2011 at 1:54 am

why am I not surprised that most of the posters on this list do not seem to know the difference between The Republic of China (Taiwan) a Capitalist nation and U.S. Ally that is where the last (supposedly) Democratic government of China retreated to in order to escape the Communist Army of the Peoples Republic of China (Mainland China) in 1949. The Republic Of China (now only in control of the island of Formosa – and lesser islands such as Quemoy and Matsu — these islands are now known as Taiwan. The 100th anniversary is for the founding of the Republic of China — remember the Flying Tigers of WWII ? They were (mostly) American pilots released from American armed services to Fly for the R.O.C. against the Japanese who had invaded China in 1937. To Quote Bugs Bunny “What a bunch of Maroons” Do us all a favor , Don’t Vote .

  25. 25 roscoe Sep 25th, 2011 at 9:46 am

Some of us do know the difference between ROC and Com. China.
It doesnt ease the fact that they are celebrating Taiwan.
After years of all the “Japcrap” , “buy American” comments from the HD faithful, I knew somebody would post something to justify this.
    HA!

    Double standards.

I lost a really good gig because I asked Harley-Davidson “What percentage of Harley-Davidson motorcycles are made in the USA?”

It was about eight years ago. I was doing an interview with Harley’s PR spokesperson for a biker rag article I was writing. The Q&A started out friendly and mundane. It made an ugly turn though the moment I asked: “What percentage of Harley motorcycles are made in the USA?” She dodged the question quickly. I asked again and she got very angry and came at me with a “how dare you even ask” attitude. She even went after me personally and said “Do you even know how to ride?”. Her conduct totally blew me away. She terminated the interview and refused to answered the question.

An hour later I got a call from the magazine editor saying that the Harley PR gal just called him and said that the magazine would essentially be blackballed by Harley if they ever worked with me again. That’s illegal so I lawyered-up. After some back-and-forth I agreed to drop any further legal action in return that Harley simply answer my question. Their response: “51% of Harley-Davidson motorcycles are made in the USA.” The bare legal minimum required by law for a company to be able to say that their product is made in the USA.

Though Harley recanted their spokesperson’s threat to my editor in writing he never hired me again. That was a real blow to me because I really needed the money at the time. I will say that to this day I don’t blame Harley. Their response ended up being swift and amicable. They also made the PR woman call me and grind her teeth as she ate her words.

My love for motorcycles (including my old Harley) still borderlines on a mystical obsession some might characterize as all-consuming and unhealthy. The passion lies with the ride, the wrenches and my brothers though. Not Harley. It’s just an automotive corporation like Chevy or Ford… despite what their commercials say.

I can’t speak for everyone but as for me I do lump China in with Taiwan as well as Mexico and every other nation manufacturing items and selling them with in our borders. They are all hurting our economy. The truth be known Americans buy the biggest percentage of all goods consumed by all manufactures world wide but the trade off is not even close to free trade ,China and these other countries do not allow our companies to sell endless amount of goods in China, Taiwan or Mexico as we allow them to do. These countries limit the amounts so that the trade is totally one sided. The reason this practice continues is we as Americans allow our politicians to be lobbied by the Chinese and those politicians are being paid very well for selling us down the river. It is illegal for a politician to take money for a vote but China as well as Taiwan and Mexico and on and on will pay these asshole politicians millions of dollars to give lectures. That is a bribe whether we want to admit it or not and I personally think all those politicians that have given those million dollar lectures should be prosecuted for treason. Screw China and those other countries. If you worry about our future buy American it is really that simple. HD should be ashamed of the fact they use so much non-American parts to build a so called American motorcycle that is touted as being the ultimate American bike. HD is big on selling the legend, maybe they should give a copy of Rosetta Stone’s learn to speak Chinese with every purchase because at the rate things are going we Americans will need to speak Chinese before long.
