In 2013 Europe Will Have Its First Annual Motorcycle Land Speed Trials In Italy

Ruedi Steck, a dedicated multiple Land Speed Record racer at the legendary Salt Flats of Bonneville/Utah, just announced it. He  will organize the first European Motorcycle Land Speed Record Trials to be held on Easter Weekend 2013. at the famous Nardo Race Track in Southern Italy.

For years, Ruedi and his team of Swiss Performance, like many European racers have traveled to the Bonneville Salts for the BUB Speed Trials. Fast rising travel and transportation costs, US immigration red tape and import procedures, track‘s elevation (1.286 meters above sea level) and the ever changing salt track condition have never stopped racers to break new records.

But all Bonneville racers do agree on one fact: they would be faster on a solid track, tarmac or concrete…

Now the time has come. The Italian Nardo test track has been a high-speed record facility for decades, testing ground for car manufacturers and developers of all types. Built by Fiat in 1975, the facility has recently been acquired by Porsche. It is the “„Area 51″ of the European automotive Industry! For the first time, Ruedi Steck and his team have now opened this high-tech top-secret facility to FIM-sanctioned motorcycle land speed racing. No matter if privateer, dealer, customizer, manufacturer or tuner, all will be able to race and beak records officialized by an FIM homologated, timing team!

The first event is set from March 29th to April 1st 2013. (March 29t-30 will be technical inspection and briefing. March 31-April 1 is racing.) Paricipation for the 1st year is limited to 50 participants. Nardo is a banked 12 km long /4 km diameter round track offering 6 lanes (2 for trucks) on which the fastest is banked for a neutral speed of 240 km / 149 mph. The current Top Speed on this track is held by a Koenigsegg  sportscar, driven by Loris Bicocchi to a top speed of 387.87 km/h (241.01 mph). Traction on the lanes is expected to be perfect.     CLOCKWISE OR COUNTER CLOCKWISE…..OR DO YOU RUN ONE DIRECTION AND HAVE TO BACK UP THE RUN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION? WEIRD

    The problem at Nardo that the bikes will face will be the same situation that’s kept Koenigsegg from usurping the Bugatti Veyron’s record ( which was set on VW’s test track BTW )

    That being having to be on a constant turn as well as dealing with the additional G Forces from the banking in the constant turn that will add extra drag as well as weight to the bikes .

    Having read in detail Koenigsegg’s comments on their exploits at Nardo I’m kind of betting this Euro BUB week won’t go so well ;-)

    This is great news, and personally, I am glad to see Swiss Performance doing all the leg work to get this speed trials event planned. Guess I’ll have to keep an eye on airfares next year. Can’t wait to see who is on the entry list of 50 riders.

    There are tons of WW2 airfields in Europe, some quite long…. With no turns, no banking, no guard rail to hit if you blow a tire ….
    In the US we have the Texas mile, Mojave mile, one even in Fiorida, we had Maxton AFB. Why not try and use a runway ?

    There are plenty of those in Europe for sure

    It’ll be interesting, no doubt, athough there have already been lots of top speed events in Europe, including the events at Elvington in Yorkshire, where speeds of over 240mph have been recorded over the mile by seeral riders.
