I am not sure I can explain very well how those who don’t need a mobility scooter can find it trendy to ride one at the maximum speed of 8 mph. But I know the name of the person responsible for such an unexpected “fashion statement.” He is an English engineer named Andrew Wylie. I understand his marketing approach: yes mobility scooter users would like their vehicle to be more attractive to them and to those around them. So, he decided to produce theme mobility scooters (for example the classic Jeep & Land Rover), and luck striking, after a report on his business in the UK Chronicle, MTV and video clip producers started to call to get their own custom versions.
And now, because there is no business like show business, many “able” people call to get their custom pimped out disability scooter! Even English pop star Robbie Williams (top right picture) is using one to film his new music video “Going Crazy.” His “Harley-Davidson” scooter model (cost is £5,000.) looks a lot like the one the MOD’s were riding in 70’s London. Andrew just wanted to bring something different to the mobility scooter market. He got much more, discovering like me that in big cities, especially if you are not handicapped, young and old can get a lot of fun circling around pedestrians, playing with street bumps and jumping kerbs at 8 mph. No driver license required…
Only in England…
Very, very cool. Trip…………..Out!
Quadraphenia redux.
8 mph down a narrow hallway is pretty damn fast! Taking a right or left turn down one of these hallways at full speed will tip one of these things too.
God help you if you nail another patient. No wrath like a nurse scorned.
Some wild man in Sweden put a small motorcycle engine in a mobility scooter. He does tricks, jumps, etc etc. It looked like he could do a good 40 mph. Even though it looked like a stock mobilty scooter, with a big honking exhaust pipe, he still got pulled over all the time. Its on Reddit for those interested.
the british ‘mods and rockers’ got old too so they will move to these.
where as in america bikers go from choppers to baggers.
things like these are embarassingly fun. you have so much fun on them but you look like the biggest dork doing it . lol
There was an injured motocrosser who worked at the Greeves factory in the 60’s in the U.K. who ended up in a wheelchair. So he put a 250cc motocross motor in it and used it legally on the road.It would go 50 mph forwards AND backwards.
Being in a scooter would love something more fashionable and bikerish.
@Terence; that was Bert Greeves, the owner of the company! ‘Mobility scooters’ used to be called ‘Invacars’, and lots of moto mfr’s built them, but with tiny motors. Brough Superior built the ultimate ‘invacar’ – a thundering big OHV v-twin and sidecar for a customer with no legs – it had an electric starter ca.1932.
