Breaking News. Erik Buell Sells 49.2% Of Erik Buell Racing Inc For 25 Million

EBR1EBR2It looks like now as it was a very good operation for Erik Buell that 3 years ago Harley-Davidson shut down the former Buell Motorcycle Company. After Harley severed its ties with Erik Buell, he started the Erik Buell Racing inc. firm, launching the EBR’s 1190RS flagship model, a limited-edition high-power sports motorcycle. In a very sweet deal for Erik, Bain Capital backed Hero MotoCorp Ltd is buying 48.2% stake in Erik Buell Racing Inc (EBR) for 25 million. 15 million in EBR and the remaining $10 million will be invested within the next nine months.

For Hero MotoCorp the objective is to build up a line of better powered sporty motorcycles than its competitors in India, including its former partner and now competitor Honda. Hero MotoCorp is already the largest motorcycle maker in the world by volumes. The Indian motorcycle market of sporty motorcycles is still a low-volume segment, but a high-margin one with rapid expansion. Hero Motocorp will bank on new models from Erik Buell Racing to dominate this market and will also help EBR sells his models in Europe and the USA.

Good move for Erik.If he can deal with the endemic corruption in India and get paid without twenty years of litigation in their notorious courts, that is.

if this helps Buell become a force in the marketplace to be reckoned with then i am all for it. i would love to buy a american sport bike… even if it takes a foreign backer to get it moving. Best of luck to Erik Buell Racing!!!!

Good for Eric Buell – no one is more deserving of a fat payday than him – It’s nice to see a guy who got knocked on his ass by a bully bounce back and hit it out of the park. Bravo.
Now Eric – Remember that $100 I lent you at Sears Point in 1982 ………..

  12. 12 hungouver Jul 1st, 2013 at 3:12 pm

almost as much as mv agusta got to take back their company from hd

  13. 13 Mike Jul 1st, 2013 at 3:16 pm

What a sign of the times when Buell, one of the few men in the country capable of putting together a top-flight American made production sportbike, gets dumped by Harley, a company that bills itself as American as apple pie but lacked the cajones to support Buell’s bikes simply because they weren’t chrome-laden rolling couches; and the only company that had the guts to back Buell bikes for the long term is from f-ing India. Wow. Just wow.

  23. 23 cbert Jul 3rd, 2013 at 9:08 pm

Isn’t the engine in the Buell made in Austria? Can’t remember.

  24. 24 Doug Jul 4th, 2013 at 6:44 pm

Cool deal Erik & EBR staff…keep on keepin on!

    @Terence – Mission Motorcycles is American-made.

Street legal performance the same as the 600cc race grid

  25. 25 Woody's Jul 4th, 2013 at 7:25 pm

I just can’t get my head around them paying that kind of dough for under half the company. Is there that much of a high-end sportbike market or is this about buying a name to stick on everything in sight they plan on making?

  26. 26 Harlan Schiilinger Jul 8th, 2013 at 9:19 am

    Bravo, Eric!

  27. 27 Terence Tory Jul 8th, 2013 at 9:46 am

Doug,I think Mission Motorcycles is not a serious market contender and I doubt ever will be.Their frame appears to me to be designed by a guy who has only looked at images of real ones on a laptop.

  28. 28 New York myke Jul 8th, 2013 at 6:19 pm

Yeah good for Eric, he’s a hell of an engineer and I always salute success but HD lost millions on the brand and as a dealer who was at the top of Buell sales year after year we lost money year after year because we couldn’t convince them to label the product Harlley-Davidson. I suspect Eric was the reason and I k ow he took my efforts to see that done personally (an understatement!) but it was and I’m sure still is a great motorcycle, Wandell did the right thing, (a lot of!) and I don’t think anyone at the motor company is going to feel bad about Erics well earned success! And go Bain Capital!

  29. 29 obone Jul 11th, 2013 at 8:09 am

the force is strong with you young Erik, destroy the evil HD empire and their slow ass bikes

  30. 30 obama Jul 11th, 2013 at 8:22 am

thanks for creating jobs Erik, since I can’t

  31. 31 Hulk Hogan Jul 11th, 2013 at 8:32 am

Erik are you ready for Hulkomania
are you ready to run wild on HD
    I am with you Brother

  32. 32 Ducley Jul 15th, 2013 at 1:57 pm

Bain Capital backed Hero MotoCorp Ltd is buying 48.2%

Isn’t that the same Bain Capital that used to employ the EEEEEvil Mitt Romney?

  33. 33 woody Sep 25th, 2013 at 8:23 am

…Ducley, Mitt Romney is one of the FOUNDERS of Bain Capitol. They are credited with setting the current trend of outsourcing American jobs. They buy a company, bring over chinese workers for the American employees to train (to take their places !) then close the facility and move operations to China or elsewhere.
