BUB Seven Streamliner To Challenge Current 376.156 MPH Land Speed World Record

Bub-Seven-Streamliner1Denis Manning, designer and builder of the BUB Seven Streamliner, is scheduled to attend the Cook Land Speed Shootout October 10th-14th 2013, on Utah’s legendary Bonneville Salt Flats. The FIM (Federation Internationale de Motocyclisme) and AMA (American Motorcyclist Association) sanctioned event will gather the top motorcycle competitors for a battle against the current world record of 376.156mph held by Mike Akatiff’s Ack Attack Streamliner, ridden by Rocky Robinson. After a 4 year hiatus, and thanks to the generous funding of sponsor Jamie Williams, owner of Stockton Recycling Center, the BUB Seven Streamliner made a respectable 323.333mph shakedown run during the 2013 BUB Motorcycle Speed Trials.

Bub-Seven-Streamliner2Denis Manning, a AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer, is no stranger to record-breaking speed. In 1970, another Manning-designed streamliner ridden by Cal Rayborn held the world record at a speed of 265.492mph. During the 2006 BUB Motorcycle Speed Trials, rider Chris Carr, 7-time AMA Grand National Flat Track Champion piloted the BUB Seven Streamliner for a new record of 350.884 mph. The record has continued to change hands between the Ack Attack Streamliner and BUB Seven. BUB recaptured the record again in 2009 with an average speed of 367.382 mph before it fell again to the Ack Attack at the current speed of 376.156 mph in 2010.

Cyril-Huze-Chris-CarrThe BUB Seven streamliner features a purpose-designed and built 3000 cc engine, carbon-composite monocoque chassis and Goodyear 400mph speed rated motorcycle tires. Says Manning, “We hope to reclaim the record at the Cook Land Speed Shootout. After tune up runs at the BUB Motorcycle Speed Trials in August, and a rain delay during the originally scheduled date for the Cook Shootout, we are eager to get back on the salt and go for the record”.

BUB Seven Streamliner updates can be found at Seven Streamliner. Manning and team are passionate about advancing the sport of land speed racing.  Each August BUB Racing invites the world to compete at the BUB Motorcycle Speed Trials, held at Utah’s Bonneville Salt Flats.  For additional information, visit BUB Racing.

Is the skinny guy in the white shirt going ride it?

  2. 2 D. Jersey Oct 6th, 2013 at 10:35 am

Rodent, I can tell you that Chris Carr, a short guy, just fit in the cockpit with absolutely no room to spare. Cyril is too tall to fit in it.

Good luck to Denis, Chris and all the crew. Cyril, update us.

I can’t imagine going this speed. Is the target 400 mph?

  5. 5 Gary Princeton Oct 6th, 2013 at 10:39 am

Is a video of the attempt being made?

Well, you never know what happens on the salt, but there is still a slight chance to see a new record this year. No matter how high. Nevertheless, chances are slim at best, because parameters for running are so narrow that it is difficult to have them all in place at one (well, two, counting the return run…) “perfect moments”. to follow the events, especially if you plan to make the trip there!

Unfortunately, Cooks original date was affected by the gouverment shutdown. Quote http://landspeedevents.com: “Shootout Delayed!

Due to the government shutdown and subsequent effect on most federal agencies the BLM was forced to deactivate our permit for the shootout dates of October 7-11. It is not the BLM’s fault. They are forced to follow the federal guidelines. All is not lost however. We had originally scheduled the rain date for October 10-14 and then moved it up due to racer request. Our paperwork for that date is still active and we have been informed that steps can be taken to ensure our ability to run on that date, barring of course the intervention of mother nature again.

So, to be very clear. The October 7-11 date is definitely cancelled.” QUOTE END

AND SCTA World Finals were just cancelled, QUOTE http://www.scta-bni.org:

    “World Finals – Oct 1 – 4 2013

    Cancelled

The salt flats are presently covered in water and more rain is expected. The water levels have gone down since the big rains and occasionally we can see dry spots, but with the temperatures being so low, there is just not enough time for the salt to dry up enough to make racing possible.” QUOTE END

It’s Bonneville. It has happened all those 65 SCTA and 10 BUB years – and it may happen again. Good luck to all out there!

    Flight, car, and room booked.
Motorcycle engine measuring tools, and clothes packed.
Arrive on salt Wed. 10/9 – mid afternoon.

Safe travels to Chris, Denis, and all competitors. Bring on the Big Speeds!!

As it states in a song I once heard…

    “Well the world seems big except for once a year;
when motorcycle freaks all gather here.
Some ship their bikes by a boat or plane,
but it don’t really matter ’cause it’s all the same.

They’ve got the will…to get to Bonneville
Yes we need that thrill…we all get from Bonneville”

Good Luck to Dennis & his crew! Is that song a “Drew original”? Sounds like something that just might have been “created” around a circle of friends at the Flats?!

A few years ago Dennis had one of his streamliners on display at the Barber Vintage Festival. I met some of the crew and they let me take a very close look at the machine. They were more than happy to answer all questions, not snobby at all, just a bunch of gear heads like the rest of us.
