Triumph Motorcycles Will Attempt New World Land Speed Record In August 2015. Guy Martin Confirmed As Pilot.

Triumph1Triumph2Triumph Motorcycles wants to bring the World Land speed Record back home with TT legend and adrenaline junkie Guy Martin confirmed as the pilot. The FIM Federation Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) world record attempt will take place at the Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah August 24-27, 2015. While the current record stands at 376.363 mph, the Triumph team is aiming to surpass that over the measured mile.

The Triumph Rocket III Streamliner is powered by two 2.3-litre Triumph Rocket III engines, producing 1,000 bhp. It features a carbon Kevlar monocoque construction with two turbocharged Triumph Rocket III engines producing a combined 1,000 bhp at 9,000 rpm. The motorcycle is 25.5′ long, 2′ wide and 3′ tall. Powered by methanol fuel, the bike is competing in the Division C (streamlined motorcycle) category. Piloting the purpose built Triumph Rocket Streamliner will be Isle of Man TT racer, truck mechanic and TV presenter Guy Martin. Well known for his love of speed, Guy is relishing the prospect of bringing the land speed record back to Triumph and the UK after an absence of 45 years.

Guy-Martin-in-Triumph-RocketTriumph has a long legacy of smashing the land speed record and held the title of “World’s Fastest Motorcycle” from 1955 to 1970 with the exception of a brief 33-day period. The record-breaking Triumph streamliners of that period were Devil’s Arrow, Texas Cee-gar, Dudek Streamliner and Gyronaut X1, the former achieving a top speed of 245.667 mph (395.28 km/h). Today’s bar, held by Rocky Robinson since 2010 riding the Top Oil-Ack Attack streamliner, sits at 376.363 mph (605.697 km/h).

Final testing is scheduled at the Bonneville Salt Flats in mid-July. To follow the progress of the world land speed record attempt, visit Triumph Land Speed and Guy Martin Racing.

This is great news, and built in my hometown of Portland Oregon. Always been a Guy Martin supporter.

Brilliant news and an inspired choice of rider. Guy Martin is a Star and a true petrol head, my only worry is if you guys in America will be able to understand him. Look him up and you will see what I mean. Best of luck Guy, stay safe and bring the record home for Triumph.

His autobiography is a good read and I suggest it to all bike racing fans. Took a few years but now I can almost understand what he says, at least 1/2 the time. Hope they take the record.

I have not been a fan of the Hinckley derivative of the (once great) marque – but this is just brilliant; best of luck to them.

Martin is not a bad choice either, anybody that can come back from THAT crash, can essentially master anything at speed.

At what point does a “rider” become a “pilot”? ….and how can I get that designation?

    Best of luck, Guy!

Wow! love it… Guy is just the right person for the job as anybody who has seen his crash on the road going luge? in the TV series knows… “Why did you crash? we told to take it easy” “I wanted to go faster….”
Not that I want him to crash you understand…
Good Luck Guy and Triumph – A good TV doc to come out of this I hope and the funds to film him riding his Enfield back to England from Goa

On one hand obviously i wish them all the luck in the world . On the other though where in the heck are the US manufactures Victory , Indian or the MC and why aren’t they out there making sure the record stays here instead of returning to a UK M/C company ? As far as the choice of Mr Martin ? Methinks the good man may be finding the Salt to be a whole lot different from the TT or any other venue he’s raced at . He may also find out the hard way just how unforgiving the Salt can be . But again in the spirit of fair competition I’ll say … Keep the shiny side up .. The rubber side down .. and Rock on – Ride On – Remain Calm – and Carry On

We are. We did. And we helped some kids along the way. Kudos to Lloyd Greer and his team, and Brian and Laura Klock. Three friends who exhibit the class and grace that I see in racers around the world.

ANY RIDER who choses to race at Bonneville, El Mirage, or Pikes Peak has my respect and admiration. From the smallest bikes to land missiles like Triumph is running – it takes a commitment to build up to speed.

Best of luck to that team, and every one who challenges themselves to ride their bike faster than they ride a keyboard.

Have a great weekend – I’ve gotta go work on Elnora…

Nice work and sweet video Robert. 173 mph on an open bike is faster than I’m willing to go. And way more impressive than riding in that Triumph Missile. Next stop 200mph!

Only TJ could make the mistake in thinking that ridng in a straight line on the salt is harder than the TT. Just say No TJ. Eventually the fog will clear.

  16. 16 zipper Jul 11th, 2015 at 12:25 pm

The record 376+ is more than 200mph. faster than 173mph still on two wheels. I have been in a lot of fast vehicles over the years, but I can’t comprehend speeds approaching 400mph. on a bike, no matter what it looks like. Don’t believe I have the balls for that ride. ..Z
