I hear that the Slingshot is a success. I am surprised. But good for Polaris.
Ah yes a Go-Cart….. (by any other name, is still a Go-Cart)

I like how these are classified as motorcycles. Since motorcycles do not get smog tested, you can pretty much do whatever you like in terms of high horsepower mods. Except if you live in CA.
I wasn’t a big fan of these until I had an opportunity to drive one. What a hoot!
Legal production motorcycles do have to pass US EPA emissions standards, Most assuredly this vehicle has been tested and certified emissions compliant as well.
Great looking motorcycle. Would like one . Several in my local area.
I have a friend that owns a Slingshot and he took me for a ride last weekend. All I can say is WOW! These things are so much fun. They are definitely NOT a go cart. More like a street legal naked nascar!
We kept having to go back and get my stomach , whether he was going through the gears from a stop or drifting, or taking a turn. It’s like it is on rails.
RE:
“… definitely NOT a go cart….”
Well, by that criterion then it is ‘Mot definitely not” a motorcycle.
I propose that the “degree of difficulty” required (for the uninitiated) to simply get a vehicle roiling down the road is probably a good metric for establishing what is or is not a motorcycle.
Like it or not, that may very well be one of the reasons more of these sorts of vehicles are being created. No one wobbles away form the dealership after purchasing one.

The point is, in reality. its a hell of a lot easier to sell such devices to the timid……

All production motorcycles, including Slingshot, have to pass EPA emissions testing. I’ve never met Nicker, don’t know a thing about him. But guys who feel the need to diferentiate what a real motorcycle consists of or call out others as timid…sorry, that comes across as insecurity. This thing is about as much fun as I’ve had on the street. I don’t give a rip what the technical classification of it is. The government classifies three wheels and a motor as a motorcycle. Big whup. I call the Slingshot fun.
RE:
“… as much fun as I’ve had on the street….”
BobS,
And i certainly don’t know you. However, what i do know is your missing the point.
No one disputes the fact that this product is “fun” for many….
The point is, regardless of how much “fun” you had, many of us simply don’t recognize it’s operation as “motorcycling” ………. Its simply a 3 wheeled car.
If you compare just one simple operating aspect, like steering, the operator simply turns a steering wheel like a car, as opposed to having to grasping the concept of gyroscopic counter-steering (which many break-in-bikers don’t , hence the number of low mileage new bikes for sale anally).
Look, motorcycling has traditionally been way more than “just having Fun”… Its a discipline to be mastered. Moreover, “guys who [have mastered motorcycling] feel the need to diferentiate what motorcycle[ing]” is because TV moronics has “tainted” the legacy of motorcycling to the point of embarrassment.
So if “…This thing is about as much fun as [you’ve] had on the street…” then by all means go buy one. But the implication of posting that in a motorcycling context implies that you’re relaying a “motorcycling experience.” Perhaps in your mind that’s true….

Nicker, no that wasn’t my point. My point was, why care? No the skills that are squired learning to ride a bike are not needed to ride a trike, any trike regardless of wether it has a steering wheel or handle bars. So what? I’m not relaying a “motorcycling” experience, rather I was pretty explicit, it’s a fun experience. The technicality of the government designating trikes as motorcycles is of no consequence to me, that doesn’t effect my motorcycling experience at all.
BobS…
I get your point.
For you, driving this device is about stuff that’s “fun,” not about motorcycling.
But then so are other products made by MC OEMs (like snowmobiles)…..
Would all those things be relevant here too…. just because their fun ???
