Ridin’ Round Texas 2016

Nicklus1Nicklus2A letter from Jeff Nicklus of Jeff Nicklus Customs.

“Cyril. With Conrad’s passing in 2012 I realized that it was the end of the Nicklus name. He was the only male child in the family. I also realized that my children are ninth generation Texans. I further realized that I had been born and raised in Texas my entire life and I really didn’t know where I came from….I knew I came from Texas but what is Texas? I have been to every major city in the state and most mid-sized cities as well but I had never been into the bowels of the state to see the real Texas. I wanted to see and talk to the people that helped make this state great…..I wanted to talk to the old oil men, cattlemen, farmers, ranchers etc. before they were gone forever. So what I decided to do was to come up with a plan to do just that and do that on the back of a motorcycle.

Nicklus3Unfortunately Lady Luck had something very different in mind for me. As you are aware I was diagnosed with a very serious case of cancer and only given a 20% chance of survival. During my year and a half battle with the Big “C” I continued to think of the “adventure” I needed to take just as soon as I kicked cancer’s ass. Well, I have kicked cancer’s ass and now it is time for the adventure to start.

The plan is as follows: I built a bike to make the ride (see the enclosed pictures) actually I built two bikes for the trip but more on that later. I am going to take 30 days, the entire month of April, to head out to discover Texas. I am going to try and confine the ride as many two lanes roads as possible, of course that will not be possible 100% of the time but you get the idea. I have three friends who are coming in to start the ride with me, my brother from another mother, and owns nine Desperado Motorcycles, from Seattle ( I built bike #2 for him to make the ride on), a good friend from Denver, who has two Desperado’s and a local longtime friend from here in Houston. We leave the morning of April 1st (yes, I know that is April Fool’s day) and head to Washington on the Brazos, the Birthplace of Texas, for our official start of the ride.

Nicklus4We have broken the ride up into two parts: Part One we will head from Washington on the Brazos south to South Padre Island and move to west Texas from there. We will return to home base the 18th of April so I can be home for my son’s birthday on the 19th. On April 20th we start the Northern portion of the trip. On April 27th we will end up in Gonzales Texas and on the 28th we will follow General Sam Houston’s “retreat” to San Jacinto where he and the Texas Army defeated General Santa Anna for the ultimate freedom of Texas from Mexico.

Along the way we will have many people join us for a day or more ( my Pal Rick Fairless will join use for a couple of days during our northern route) and by the time we start out on the 28th from Gonzales I expect to have about 50 riders to make the final 3 days.

I plan on doing a daily….well maybe every couple of days video that I will post on YouTube and on my FaceBook page of the adventure. There you have it. I am so excited that this plan is finally starting to come together! Later” Jeff Nicklus

If your ride doesn’t include Maypearl, you’re missing out. And try to find Griffithswitch if you can. At least there’s a sign for it.

Hey Jeff, Happy to see it has all come together for you. I know you’ll have a blast and the bike looks great.
Looking forward to seeing you in the Black Hills this summer and getting the behind the scene parts that won’t make the G rated version. I know that any challenges will be met with complete preparation, so just want to wish you and the team travellers the best of luck.
