You often ask me about the size of Polaris Motorcycles division (Indian, Victory and Slingshot brands) versus Harley-Davidson and how each American brand is growing in relation to each other.
First, as a corporation (meaning including all its products, motorcycles, snowmobiles, ATVβs, etc) Polaris had a tremendous growth during the last 10 years. Revenue is up 169.7% versus Harley-Davidson 6.50%. During the same period Polaris net income is up 229.9% versus Harley-Davidson only 30.1%. Being extremely diversified, off-road vehicles first, then motorcycles are mainly responsible for Polaris excellent results.
But motorcycles are the new growth engine for Polaris. This segment, starting in 2013 with the Indian relaunch, saw a gain of 1.8% of the overall motorcycle market share versus a loss of 3.6% for Harley-Davidson for the period 2013-2015. Polaris motorcycle sales, excluding PG&A (parts, garments & accessories) went from $220 millions in 2013 to $608 millions in 2015.
Looks like HD is getting their ass spanked .
Cyril, Interesting numbers but we would really like to know how many UNITS of victory and indian sell compared to harley. Another significant stat would be Market share. We know harley is at 50%+ for all MC’s over 600cc. Can you tell us where victory and indian are? Thanks!
Look at the end of that line chart. It’s probably due to the Razor, Polaris is having problems.
Compare the margins. Nobody is spanking Harley’s ass. Q3 YTD H-D gross profit % was 33.6%. And Polaris Industries motorcycle 14.9%. Think about that. H-D 125% more profitable per sales dollar than Polaris when it comes to motorcycles.
I appreciate the effort but whether by accident or on purpose, it doesn’t answer the most requested graphs-BIKE UNITS SOLD by YEAR.
% doesn’t mean squat when comparing a mature company to a young one, and dollar values reflect too many variables. If PII doesn’t want to post units sales I respect that, but evading it while releasing smokescreens and teasers just leaves me cold.
amf to the rescue!
It would be nice to see HD units vs Victory units vs Indian units.
I believe, according to your chart, HOG’s Net Income is –30.1%.
To quote a world famous loser. At this point what difference does it make.
They are both selling motorcycles. One made in the United States and one assembled here but that not my concern.π
Agree with Mr. Riley !
H-d has 50+ of the heavyweight market & they are not going anywhere,
the faithful will see to that !
However, there is no denying that Polaris (with both Victory & Indian)
are claiming market share !!!
not being broken out my actual a motorcycle specific number is a ploy by Polaris.
but for good or for ill you can’t deny their effect & I believe that share will keep growing .
the competition is good for US the consumer & the aftermarket !
More innovation, as they keep trying to “one-up” each other is better for all of us !!
Win-Win if you ask me
@BMax, I guess that’s the point for me, since they ARE claiming market share, let’s see the numbers instead of a smokescreen. Eventually the smack talk goes away and both parties are in the ring, lets see the round by round scoring π
Will all of you Harley lovers pull your heads out of a hole in the ground long enough to see, the forest fire is burning in your direction “really fast” it’s Indians and Victory’s. The numbers are in your face, the bikes are all around you and in some of your friends garages! Competition is great, the forest is burning, make a choice!
2 Kent, the number aren’t in our face, that’s why so many keep asking for them. % is not units. That’s all we want to see, and all we keep asking for. I’ve owned twice as many Hondas than Harleys and this isn’t about supporting a brand. If anyone is missing the point here, it’s you. People saying how awesome someone is doing without a unit comparison is begging for responses like mine.
