Road Legal Salt Lake Racer

The Triumph Street Twin is the most contemporary and financially accessible Bonneville. A modern classic powered by the critically acclaimed high torque 900cc engine and designed by the factory as a perfect starting point to build your own custom bike. Logically, it’s the model that dealers had to use in a “Triumph Dealer Custom Built Competition (equivalent in its principle to Harley’s Battle Of The Kings) You are looking at the work of Dutch dealer Triumph Groningen, the unanimous winner of this creative confrontation with a stunning interpretation of the pre-sixties Café Racers and Salt Lake Racers.

This racer was built by Netherlands based Triumph Groningen’s owner Leonard in collaboration with Rinaldo, a very experienced metal fabricator. They immediately agreed on producing a machine with hand-crafted parts, looking like it has run a dozen times on the salts of Bonneville, but still road legal without modifications and keeping its modern functionality when ridden before and after the race.

Leonard says: “For over ten years, Rinaldo and I planned on a project we could build together. The Triumph Street Twin Competition proved to be the perfect opportunity. We looked at the old belly tank racers and Leonard wanted something similar, but smaller and lower. On the way back after we had our First meeting, I already designed in my mind all the one-off parts.” Rinaldo formed the fairing and tail end out of 1 millimeter sheet metal. Rinaldo fabricated the the seat pan and than rolled the metal plates stretching the fairing.

Details to be noticed are how this machine is setup to give the rider a racer stance: the off-center headlight, the detachable license plate and the horn and starter button ‘hidden’ in the bar ends, the car taillight behind the Triumph glass logo in the back seat hump, the cut levers to make them look racy, the custom foot pegs and custom laced spoke wheels etc… Not very visible on the pictures, paint job around the fairing imitates dents due to intense salt abrasion. Amazingly, it took only 2 weeks to complete this Triumph project. Triumph Groningen. (with the collaboration & photography of Onno Wieringa)

    Wow, a great custom that can actually do it on the road. Almost got a Triumph, but got a great deal on a 2015 Scout. Wish I could have both!

    Good Luck for racing on the Salt LAKE 🙂 Veel Geluk en succes! I assume you’ll test ride the bike then at/over the Zuider Zee rather than the Zuidersee Dam? Just Penny pickin’ for fun! You may race AROUND the Salt Lake, probably over the Salt Lake on the Railroad Track, but you gotta be “bigger than Jesus” to race a bike over the Salt Lake. Maybe, in a few thousand years…
    Check you map before you go, but I know you mean the “Bonneville Salt Flats”, which are roughly 60 Miles west of the Great Salt Lake 🙂
    BTW: If you want to “float” on the Salt Lake, try Antelope Island! Great Experience! Save trip and Good Salt! Motorcycle Speed Trials are a great event to join!

    Lets give credit where credit is due.Awesome job! Lot of one off fabrication time. Who cares where or even if you do race it. Appreciate the craftsmanship.
