BSA Has Been Acquired. It’s The Return Of A Legendary British Motorcycle Brand.

Automotive giant Mahindra from India has purchased outright the British BSA brand name and all the rights attached to it for $4.1 million in an exclusive arrangement through its subsidiary, Classic Legends Private Limited, to build new BSA and Jawa motorcycles.

It seems that the company plans to up its motorcycle game by producing new BSAs and Jawas as part of a campaign to supplement their commuter bikes with upscale “premium” motorcycles.

“We are very excited about the new journey that we are embarking upon in the two wheeler space,” said Dr. Pawan Goenka, Mahindra’s Automotive Business Managing Director. “Our focus on the premium, niche segment through Classic Legends will bring alive some iconic brands like BSA and JAWA, not just in the form of products but as an entire lifestyle”

Sources in the industry state that the new Jawa and BSA bikes will be sold separately from the Mahindra bikes, and will have their own dealership network. It is suggested that the bikes will be produced at the Mahindra plant in Pithampur, Madhya Pradesh, with BSAs being sold mostly in Europe and the Americas and Jawa sold primarily in Asian markets.

    already making 4bi’s to compete w/ Polaris as well as small tractors, they may consider at a later date to build BSA in the USA

    I never knew I once lived the “BSA Lifestyle” but it’ll be interesting to see how it goes.
    At best, some bikes with classic style a support network.

    Nice to see the BSA is back. Cyril, as a side note, there’s another story that many of your blog commenters may be interested in. There’s a crime bike problem in London, England by where 50 bikes are stolen every day, 20,000 a year. Currently, there’s 130,000 registered bike owners in London alone and it’s getting to the point that you can’t get insurance coverage whatsoever, or the police won’t do anything.     Try to revitalize a brand no one so much as remembers never mind could care less about .

    My 1959 BSA A10 ROCKET 650 “pre-unit” was my sole transportation for several years back in the 70’s …. What a great bike! I liked it better than the many Triumphs and Royal Enfields that I owned. I wish these guys well.

    I recall BSAs as quite decent bikes that many of my friends and I enjoyed, and many AMA champions rode A65 flat trackers and Rocket three road racers. I’d love an A10 or B34 if they weren’t so damn pricey. I guess people do like BSAs since they’re such desirable classics.

    Resurrecting a brand and imitating someone else’s designs from 40-80 years ago is all well and good, but I refuse to accept that I’m alone in not being that impressed. I love those old designs, but if I decide to buy one, the originals in restored condition are not that hard to find. For a new machine I’d much rather have a true original, something that isn’t a copy.

    Hey guys, take a look at the huge success of Triumph, a resurrected brand if ever there was one. Though it is British owned and has six-world class factories around the world. Two of these factories are based in Hinckley in the UK, just a stone’s throw from the Mallory Park race track. There are also three factories in Chonburi, Thailand, and one in Manaus, Brazil. I for one, who ran Triumphs in the olden days, am always glad to see the Triumph logo gracing a tank

    I’m a Triumph fan too. Sure the Bonnie and Thruxton are nice but I think the Speed Triple is their top seller. I like how companies like them and BMW have those “heritage” models but are wisely making profits selling modern bikes that have engines, suspensions, and brakes worthy of a this century motorcycle.

    Lots of talk about good old BSA from my home city but I am a fan of Jawa too. Good commuter and utility bikes that were built in Czech Republic and also of course India. It would be good to see them back as a force to be reckoned with. They built 350cc bikes mainly and that is where the market us in India. 350cc accounts for over 90% of Royal Enfield sales in India.

    But is will not be British. So it will NOT be the real thing by an even greater margin versus (eg) the Hinckley Triumph and the Polarindian.

    Buy what you like, but the ‘second coming’ circus is getting a bit crowded, each offering less meaningful substance above a bygone brand.

    Call me nostalgic, but there is novelty in an unbroken lineage, such as HD, Moto Guzzi, BMW and such.

    I believe the owner John Calicchio would be interested in joining forces with Mahindra as a dealer for the new BSA motorcycles and spare parts. John’s experience in the industry would make a great deal of sense. It would be an excellent fit for both companies’

    Note to BobS – The best selling current Triumph model is the Bonneville Bobber, not the street Triple or Daytona.
    Royal Enfield is expanding in US and around the world. The new 650 will probably be around $6000

    Welcome to the world economy!
    The PolarIndian, started in Springfield Massachusetts and then after staggering around with Floyd Clymer, the name got acquired by a company in UK, Germany and then back to the USA and now up to Minnesota.
    In addition to my British 66 Triumph Bonneville I enjoy a Japanese 2001 Kawasaki W650, which looks like a lovechild of BSA and Triumph, and is more reliable than either of those mid-60s products.
    Mahindra is a good solid Industrial products company which also makes some pretty fair roadracing bikes. I think BSA has fallen into good hands and that Royal Enfield is in for some stiff competition.

    Worldwide, the BSA mark got a whole lot of great free publicity on the back of George Michael’s famous rocker jacket, and based on that alone, the $4 mil price seems like a bargain.

    PS: Kirk, that’s Whitworth, not Wentworth wrenches in my ’66 Bonne toolbox, but mebbe effin’ autospell is the culprit.

    I sure hope BSA does a better job bringing back the Rocket 3 than Triumph did. The last Rocket 3s built by BSA were beautiful.

    Mahindra has very deep pockets and very few Americans know that they are a major car and truck manufacturer everywhere except the US. With 837.7 billion in revenue for 2016, they can make this work.

    I think for 4m they got a major bargain !

    Nothing wrong with upright twins as long as the design keeps the crank from flexing… The triples were even better, taken out to 1000cc they could be made ferocious….

    But the old designs had a problem. The were very unfriendly to young tinkering hands that didn’t really understand mechanical concepts….

    Maybe kawasaki should buy all the old names up they built the 650 triumph clone and the indian looking bike better than the current offerings from the original names although some of the triumphs are pretty nice at least the modern ones

    Pat h; one of the best Triumph clones was the Yamaha XS650. They are being resurrected by young or new bike builders everywhere as a good custom build starter platform available cheap.

    Yah but the xs was a definite Yamaha version of the triumphs nice as they were, hell might be the better to start collecting to many that are left in stock condition are getting chopped and not worth much afterwards , the w 650 was a pretty much updated clone of the original

    I wonder whether Mahindra intends to make retro bikes or just use the names. The 250 single and 350 twins were the mainstay of Jawa every since the ’50s. But they also made some MX and ISDT competition bikes that had some innovative engineering and were very competitive in enduros. I have a 1974 360cc ISDT model. It has a magnesium crankcase that’s one piece – no split.It would be really neat if Mahindra would revive that design. I think Jawa must have patented it since I’ve never seen another 2-stroke single use it.

    I just hope they don’t start making replica BSA Gold Stars and ruin the collector value of mine.
