Fast Motorcycle Industry News

1- Jesse James WCC Long Beach facility. Got several emails asking me if West Coast Choppers was closing or closed. Contacted Jesse. He immediately replied to me: “That is just people talking smack! We have to much work to close. Wishful thoughts by our competition!” End of the rumor

2- Honda to sharply cut motorcycle prices. At least first in Japan. The company plans to slash the prices of all the motorcycles it sells domestically to 2000 levels! In an effort to halt young people’s growing disinterest in motorcycles, Honda will cut the prices of about 45 models over three years, when each undergoes a full or minor model change. Prices are likely to fall by 10 percent to 30 percent. The price-cutting strategy by Honda- an industry leader – is likely to affect other motorcycle companies. Now imagine that Honda applies the same strategy in the US, what the competition will decide?

3- Australian police wants law to declare the Hell Angels Motorcycle Club as criminal organization and ban all its activities. In Australia, the rival motorcycle organizations have come together to form the United Motorcycle Council, an umbrella group for 18 motorcycle clubs. The United Motorcycle Council said it has engaged lawyers and would fight application of such a law.

I am glad to hear that WCC is NOT closing. I had not heard the rumors but regardless I would not want to see any US builder closing his doors. Whether I like or dislike Jessie personally does not matter. If he was to close the doors, people all over the world would be getting the wrong message about our industry and the current state of the industry. Consumer confidence should be one of our major concerns. The amount of confidence a potential buyer has will determine what brand, how much he spends and whether he or she buys at all. This discussion could go on but I will end my input here. Bottom line is glad to hear WCC is not closing or even close to closing. Just my .02

The Australian police referred to above are the state police of New South Wales, Australia’s most populated state. The government in South Australia, a less populated state, has already passed laws aimed at bike clubs and the SA police have declared a club, the Finks Motorcycle Club, as a ‘declared organization’ and issued ‘control orders’ to some members making it illegal for them to associate with one and other. This has brought all the 1% clubs in the state together under one umbrella to fight this. The Finks won the first round in the courts but the case has now gone on to a higher court and a decision from that court has not yet been handed down. Other Australian states have drawn up similar legislation and time will tell where it all ends up. Many people in the legal profession are concerned about various provisions of these laws including the fact that people can be jailed based on “police intelligence” alone, with no right to access that evidence in their defence. Other states have also had clubs come together to fight these laws that are seen to threaten many freedoms. Unlike the US, Australia does not have a Bill of Rights.

One do you think for one moment Jesse James is going to tell you the truth?Ask his Exwife you’d be better off! Honda cutting 10 to 30% will happen when they can figure out how to cut off 30% of the plastic, chrome, and pot metal! Now as for the Hells A ngles, well they do what they do best!
