Hoka Hey Challenge. Update July 14, 2010.

Under the headline “Hoka Hey organizer says complaints spring from riders who failed at challenge“, Jim Durham and John White reply to some of your questions asked by a reporter of the “Rapid City Journal”.

In it, Jim Durham states that the possible winner is William Barclay, pending he passes the polygraph test, and will receive the $500,000 award at the Broken Spoke Saloon on Aug. 11 during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

It will appease some, but I am not sure yet that some of the answers made during the interview will satisfy everybody. I will not say more, let you read and comment.

I guess that sorta, maybe, sounds like it, might, kinda, possibly, not or so, clear things up or down. I guess the real proof will be August 11th in Sturgis when the prize money is, or is not, awarded.

  2. 2 Dennis J Jul 14th, 2010 at 8:55 pm

I thought John White was not involved with organizing this year’s challenge.

  3. 3 Brett Jul 14th, 2010 at 9:35 pm

In this blog and on Facebook, John White wrote several times that he had absolutely nothing to do with this year’s Hoka Hey! Now he says the opposite to the Rapid City Journal. All liars. Unbelievable.

  4. 4 Hoka NoWay Jul 14th, 2010 at 9:37 pm

Will never participate in any event where these 2 are involved. Shame on you both, Jim & John.

If you believe any of that , I have some nice swamp land for sale , you could have water right at your door . Why did they go for such a big prize ? Why not $50,000.00 , that would have been enough to get guys going .

I am, like Psychosis Prevails( posted in an earlier thread), a South Dakota resident. Many of the readers and posters here don’t realize that there are few “good wells” in central and western South Dakota. The options for those of us who choose to live here are 1.) Rural Water- like city water….monthly bill, expensive and….you have to PAY to get it to your property. I spent $ 5,000.00 15 years ago just to get a monthly bill and good water. 2.) The cistern method that P.P. is using. It works great nine months out of the year. Winter and sub-zero weather can make hauling water any distance a challenge at best. We have the cistern for a backup, but like I said….winter is interesting. 3.) A well…….I have a 480ft. well that was drilled in the 1950s. To use it for human consumption it must be filtered and softened. It is extremely hard. Drilling a new one is estimated at $9.000+.
The point I’m getting at is that there actually are water issues out there.BUT…..The rural water districts, which are set up by the state of South Dakota are responsible for managing these needs. These entities report directly to the PUC and the state government. No individual can just pipe water across miles of countryside at their own will.
In an earlier post I stated that the Rapid City Journal is careful with their sources and print the truth. I believe the above mentioned story is the truth as far as they can report. I am sure they will be covering any changes in this story as they develop. It’s their job….and it sells papers. I for one will be there Aug. 11th along with several of my students who have followed the challenge since the beginning. No matter how this ends, it has been a reality story…..and then some.

Hey Jim and John I have some advice for both of you – you have the right to remain silent, anything you say (like in an interview with the Rapid City Journal or write on the Cyril Huze Blog or post on Facebook, etc.) can and will be used against you in a court of law (federal, state, Canadian, criminal, civil)….

  9. 9 Mc Dermott Jul 14th, 2010 at 11:14 pm

Bob, you are right, I read and heard (from radio interviews) Jim Durham say things in contradiction with his new statements to the Rapid City newspaper. Same for John White. Just read his statements in this Blog where he repeats he has nothing to do with the Hoka Hey 2010. He said same many times on Facebook, but the page was removed…Now, he says exactly the opposite. Their stories change every 2 days. Same with the unofficial spokespersons they use, then they deny knowing these persons when it’s convenient to change their stories. All contradictions are on tape and/or printed, so they are not going to disappear. Up to you people to decide if they walk straight. I believe the prize is going to be given because of the media pressure, TV, newspaper, Facebook, this blog, lawyers on stand by. They just try to save their skin and the Hoka Hey Challenge for next year. John White is saving Jim Durham and in exchange John White gets to own, organize and profit from Hoka Hey 2011. John White must be convinced that to pay $500,000 is an investment that can brin much more money in profit next year. Jim Durham may also have convinced John White that using “Crazy Horse” commercial name since many years will not be an issue with the Sioux if John White help him. Are they partners in the new company Hoka Hey Motors? What is created before the Challenge started? Is it part of the deal? I guess so. Now read the statements of John White and all the comments.

To be precise, don’t miss the comment of John White answering to another comment of R.Lanza asking John White what is his relation of Jim Durham..

John White wrote back. (Dated July 11, 2010 at 4.03 pm)

“I have no financial or commercial association with Jim Red Cloud”. .

  11. 11 Rider2 Jul 14th, 2010 at 11:29 pm

It is impossible to donate or work with a tribe without a formal approval for the tribe council. I don’t understand why they say they work with people, not government or tribes. There is no way any plumbing company or else can work on anything in a reservation without proper authorization. Do they think they are going to show up with a Bobcat and start digging next to a house without an okay from a member of the tribe board???

“Red Cloud said that they plan to have a back hoe on the reservation within a week to begin implementing water into homes. Vanessa Red Cloud will be the first home to receive running water in her home as a result of the funds raised by the Hoka Hey Challenge, he said.
“She will be the first one to receive water in her house,” said Red Cloud. “We have a donated back hoe that we will be using.”

… hold on, Vanessa Red Cloud is the first one to get water. Red Cloud as a member of Jim Red Cloud’s family? that’s a joke, right?

That plus the fact that White is saying he had nothing to do with the challenge and now tells a newspaper he owns it is just great.

This stuff is better than an episode of OCC except OCC won’t be going to jail.

I’ve been following this, it’s all so bizarre! It’s so weird! I read what John White wrote on the Hoka Hey Discussion Board and it’s not anything like that article. He claimed that he might take it over next year. Now that so many of RedCloud’s lies are being exposed he’s saying that JW was always the owner…..sounds like he threw John White under the bus, lol. How fitting.

I found some concept posters for potential Hoka Hey Competitions for 2011/12:

In this blog and on Facebook, John White wrote several times that he had absolutely nothing to do with this year’s Hoka Hey! Now he says the opposite to the Rapid City Journal. All liars. Unbelievable.

I was following the facebook discussion and saw that. He actually got angry about the accusations that he was somehow involved. Here is a post I made on FB on July 5th after doing some digging:

It looks like John White is partners with Jim Durham, aka BJ, aka RedCloud.
Here it shows that Hoka Hey Motor Company is a subsidiary of Crazy Horse Motorcycles:
    http://www.hokaheymotorcompany.com/
John White is Crazy Horse LLC:
    http://brassballsbobbers.com/blog/?p=407
Here’s John White with BJ, these pictures were posted by “crazy horse” which is John White’s moniker:
    http://www.hokaheymotorcompany.com/phpbb3/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=3
Here’s John White pretending to be confused with the written instructions, note his coin number,349, and his moniker being “crazyhorse” :
    http://www.hokaheymotorcompany.com/phpbb3/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2
Now, look at the number on the coin, “349” used in the picture for the HHC Reimbursement website:
    http://www.hokaheymotorcompany.com/
That’s John White’s coin number who is Crazy Horse Motorcycles which Hoka Hey is a subsidiary of.
John White is more involved than he’s letting on.

I hate to be so early commenting,on these “Serial” Blogs, cause you want everybody to see and remember what I wrote on the other Blogs, way in the beginning. Now, finally later everbody is talking about what is “known” weeks later. Cyrill you are always on top of this type of contraversy, and you don’t fall in the trap of Gossip. That is why you are the Best. You always are on top of the Motorcycle Biz, first. That is why I call you the “TMZ”, of the Motorcycle Industry, soon everbody else will, also! Lol. Let me just say, “Big Jim or Little Jim or “Red Cloud” whatever your name is, and John White or whatever your real name is, You guyz are so Foney that you probably FAKE ORGASMS” !
P.S. John White your “2003” Bike you bought was only “WORTH” $10 G’s, I didn’t say you paid 10G’s @!#$%

  17. 17 Buck Private Jul 15th, 2010 at 8:11 am

    What happened to BENEFITS VETERANS?

  18. 18 Carla Simons Jul 15th, 2010 at 11:23 am

Buck .. yes, BJ is very good at using emotional marketing to draw people in. Ride with me and become a WARRIOR. Prove your manhood. Dont be a pansy. (before i’m lambasted, no those arent QUOTES — just paraphrasing, accurately, of all he’s said). Then throw in the “benefiting Vets” and he’s got his target audience all set to shell out $1000 to sign up. Heck, some are even signing up already for next year, if we read what JW has said. I’m unclear if the names posted on JW’s Reimbursement Request list are actually folks wanting to ride again next year, or folks wanting their coins back.

Rider2 ..ah yes, the digging begins on Vanessa Red Cloud’s property. I would guess because she’s the only person (being family, after all) who gave them permission to start digging a trench around her home. Especially when, per BJ’s interview, no permit has been applied for and no plumbing contractor hired. How long will Vanessa Red Cloud be living with an empty trench around her home? Sounds good in a news article though, even if the plumbing cant be completed in a timely fashion.

caveat.. as DarinM said, the water issues on Pine Ridge SHOULD be acknowledged, they are real, and if JW truly does have this as his primary concern for taking on the HHC and carrying it forward, rather than bailing out Durham to save his own financial investments in his newly named HH MoCo, i’ll apologize for every doubt i’ve thrown at him. I’m just not ready to do that yet.

and felicity — loved your poster that said “Prize given pending alien probing” Classic!! 🙂

ok, time to work for a living.

    ooo. one more thing..
Cool Hand Luke.. thank you thank you for your offer to go to Broken Spoke. I’ve contacted them, but no reply yet. please feel free to post anything you find on my forum as well. trying to keep it current

This interview in the Rapid City Journal is the worst case of “PR Damage Control” Jim Durham and John White could have done. Their new statements contradict their previous ones! I can’t believe these 2 guys can be so dumb and push themselves to more public untrue statements . Somebody wrote it before me in another thread. Giving the prize money under pressure will not solve the legal issues that so many have raised. And some who have raised them reached Homer in good position! They are not only those who decided to stop because they realized that there was too many question marks about both Jim Durham and the challenge integrity.

  20. 20 Brett Jul 15th, 2010 at 12:31 pm

I have the strong feeling that Jim Durham and John White were not together when the reporter of the newspaper ask them questions. Done by email or over the phone? Which would explain that Jim Durham threw John White under the bus to escape his responsibilities, stating that he was not the owner of the event, but that it was John White. He didn’t know that John White wrote everywhere on the web, including in Cyril’s website the day before that he had nothing to do with the 2010 Hoka Hey. John White must be have been mad when he read the article. Ha, ha. Are they going to fight now? The saga continues.

    Hey John,
I have never met Alan Sputhe. I do know this though…he has made a living in the motorcycle business for more than 50 years. Have you? How dare you label him as a failure. Look in the mirror and not think about how cute you are for just a minute. Without A.P.E. backing, your toy, Crazy Horse LLC.would be long gone.
There is a common theme contained in your responses and in those who take the time to read your original post to Cyril’s blog. Your theory of any press is good press does not seem to be working here.
For such a busy guy running all those companies, you sure do have a bunch of time to put up insame, rambling posts on this thread Of course you will tell us that you surround yourself with good people and other BS I’m sure.

I actually feel sorry for Mr Ed, The Test Rider …he comes across as a bit of a sissy in your original letter.
I’m sure he doesn’t mind “taking one for the team”….BUT maybe he will realize that money from “friends” comes at a very high rate of interest……loss of self respect.

By the way, what is the name of your motorcycle company today?
If it has been returned to Crazy Horse again I’d keep that one…it’s perfect!

  23. 23 Gary Semper Jul 15th, 2010 at 4:06 pm

Written by Cyril in a former post on June 28.

“This early Monday morning June 28, 2010 (4.20 am local time), and much sooner than expected, Frank Kelly from South Carolina and Will Barclay from Highland Beach, Florida, rode together under the finish banner of the Hoka Hey Challenge in Homer, Alaska. The 2 riders didn’t know each other until they met at the last checkpoint Sunday afternoon. To avoid a risk of accident while racing each other (and a disqualifying speeding ticket) they decided that they would ride together at legal speed and cross the finish line at the same time”

I would to know why and how only one of them would be the winner. Is there a picture showing who arrived first? Where are the rules of the Challenge where it is said that there will be no tie. There are no rules. Just improvisation, lies and deception from start to finish. Wonder if the other guy is going to sue.

  24. 24 Carla Simons Jul 15th, 2010 at 5:02 pm

I discovered the following via a phone call to Broken Spoke Saloon corp office in Boston

As of mid-afternoon CT today, BSS had NOT yet granted permission for Hoka Hey to hold an award ceremony on their property, but said if they were to grant permission (note the “IF”) it would be at the Broken Spoke Campgrounds, not at the Broken Spoke Saloon.

Wonder why Durham felt it necessary to express it as a done deal in the July 14 RCJ article (and it was also reported the same way in Homer News July 14):
“The $500,000 will be awarded to Barclay — pending he passes the polygraph test — at the Broken Spoke Saloon during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally on Aug. 11”

Why not say, Pending permission, we will present the award at; or We are working with Broken Spoke to make arrangement to present the prize… or… anything but making it sound like it was all wrapped up and confirmed and we’d be a fool to doubt him.

And HHC supporters wonder why so many dont take BJ at his word??

  25. 25 09 Indian Rider Jul 15th, 2010 at 5:17 pm

    Hey NorCalGuy.
Don’t be feeling anything for Mr. Ed.
I’m just setting back watching and waiting.
    Looks like it’s paid off.
I figured you boys would show eventually.
    Welcome to the fray.
My definition of sissy is you coming on under a pretense–why not post with the name Indian Riders would recognize you by.

As for me being a sissy?
Well Mr. Durham and I will meet up again soon.
I do have some questions to ask him and I’m generally not shy.

All these blogs and posts are pretty much BS.
Me–I was there–I know the story (or stories) we were told by Jim.
I have some questions to ask Durham, but I prefer to ask them face to face.

Mr. NorCalGuy would you like to meet up in Sturgis and I can introduce you to Durham?
I might even buy you a beer.
(If I like you–and I’m kind of thinking I probaly would like you once we meet–if not there’s always that pencil)!!!
    LMAO!!!

Target Company does not own the Broken Spoke Saloon downtown Sturgis They could not grant permission to have the awards there it is not their property.

  28. 28 Rider2 Jul 15th, 2010 at 10:25 pm

    Carla,
Considering all the speculations around this challenges that keep adding everyday, it is very strange that the only person who okay those guys to dig was a member of the Red Cloud family. You have to admit that it looks bad. This further tells you that this has nothing to do with tribes who are not associated and don’t want to get involved with this scam (ooopppss sorry … challenge).

As for announcing anything in Sturgis, I don’t really think any big hot spot would want to be associated with these guys. That would not be good marketing for them. They haven’t even contacted the media to show up.

Wait and see. Sturgis is in 3 weeks….

  29. 29 Felicity George Jul 16th, 2010 at 7:42 pm

The Broken Spoke Saloon and Campground is currently working with The Hoka Hey promoters to tie down a official date during Sturgis Bike Week. I spoke to Jay Allen this morning and he said the following ” We do not have any ties with the Hoka Hey organization, that being said, we are allowing them to use our location to announce the winner. We are just providing them a platform at the Campground for them to get this all in the open. and hopefully put all of the negativity to rest”

“As for announcing anything in Sturgis, I don’t really think any big hot spot would want to be associated with these guys. That would not be good marketing for them. They haven’t even contacted the media to show up.” This is not a marketing strategy, it is a chance for the main men to clear their names and be accountable.

As soon as I have a confirmed date, Cyril will be the first to know

Mentioned this Hoka Hey to a lawyer friend and he read a lot of what is on the Web. He seems to think that the heirs of the deseased can sue everyone involved if it is proved to be a scam or even if there is intent, the promoters, John White and his companies Crazy Horse, Hoka Hey Motorcycle Co. American Pile Driving and all Jim Durhams Corps can be sued. If fraud was intended or even present no one can hide behind a Corperated shield.. John White by using assets of APE opens up their liability also. Seems that Ed one of Crazy Horse riders is a manager of an APE facility, The driver of the support truck Crazy Horse, other riders are all APE employees and transportation of the bikes to Florida was at APE’S expense as was the preparing as all are APE people and John White and his rider Ed were the ones meeting with Jim Red Cloud before the race in SD and it seems that Ed drove up from his location in an APE truck charging APE. The plot thickens.
Maybe a class action law suite is the best.

    wetcthulhu@yahoo.com
It looks like I can’t post my pics here anymore….got a letter today from the admin:
“Please, prevent any offensive comments/illustrations in our Blog.”

I find it odd that i can spoof political figures or celebrities with impunity but when i make fun of the Hoka Hey crew I catch a lot of crap. Too bad. I have some really funny ones almost finished, however I respect Cyril’s wishes and will disdain from any further posts. I don’t see what’s so offensive about them, i never used profanity. I use illustrations for my point of view rather than words, What people have written in text concerning the Hoka Hey Debacle paint a much worse image than any of my photoshops.
It’s becoming abundantly clear to me that pictures must hold more power than the written word.
