Baker Drivetrain Sturgis Nights Of Mayhem

Motorcycle burnouts are almost as old as motorcycles. And during 2 Sturgis nights at the Broken Spoke County Line Baker Drivetrain entertained the crowds with their 3rd “Smoke-Down Show Down” It was chaos all over the place as 20 motorcycle builders installed 6 feet in the air in a new Burnout Cage (built by Wink eller & Jat Allen) were smoking the place until there was only one standing. When the air  cleared, the winner both nights was, without a doubt, Kevin Alsop of Big Bear Choppers.

This year, industry builders competed head to head, two-by-two with new rules creating even more mayhem to please the spectators. This year Baker Drivetrain judges put in place a fool proof system to check the competitors. They checked for 1st gear, let the burnout happen with participants hitting an indicator button to declare they were in 5th gear. They checked that they were effectively in 5th, and if you were, you were declared the winner. It made the competition much more exciting and fast paced… The goods news is that the Broken Spoke Burnout Cage is now going to travel in all rallies where the famous bar is installed. So, expect more fury created by new builders all along the next 12 months.
Baker Drivetrain would like to send out a huge thank you to all those who participated (listed thereafter) and to their generous sponsors: Spectro Oils, Bikers Choice and Indian Motorcycles of Chicago and of course Jay Allen and the Broken Spoke Saloon for hosting their 2 nights of mayhem. Awesome effort from all competitors but Kevin Alsop smoked them quicker than you could believe possible on his personal 145ci ride. Which is also awesome.

Cyril, what are the rules for this event? I love a great burnout and smoke show but not quite sure how they determine a winner.

Hey Randy – rules are pretty simple:
-two riders enter the caged area. our judges check to make sure they are in first gear. they indicate they are ready and a button is pushed to start the light tree.
-the riders watch the light tree, just like in a drag race, upon green, they Go!
-they shift gears, while burning out, as fast as possible. when they hit 5th gear – they hit a big orange button mounted next to their handlebars
-when the button is pushed, that rider’s side of the light tree lights up to indicate they’ve won
-our judge checks their shift lever to be sure they were in 5th, and if they are: they win and continue to the next round.
-if they are not in 5th, they are eliminated!

the rounds work with brackets, like a sports playoff, chosen at random. we work down through the brackets until there is only one person left – that person is declared winnner.

thanks! we’re really geared up to keep this event strong throughout the year, with another big one in sturgis 2011!

Its fun to watch these contests, but there is No way I would put my Harley up there for the burnouts. I would be afraid of damaging something.

I have never understood the appeal of burnout contests.

Everyone should check out their Facebook page. They are bragging how good and great they are. Supposedly, “spite of injuries that Kevin sustained from crashing his “Harley” motorcycle and had a broken shoulder, he still won the burnout contest.”
