2012 World Championship Of Custom Bike Building In Sturgis

A must visit while you participate to the 2012 Sturgis Rally is to the World Championship Of Custom Bike Building organized by AMD. This high level exhibition of custom motorcycles competing for the title of World Champion is staged at Lazelle Street and 3rd in Sturgis (under the big white tent just behind the Official Harley-Davidson display) and is open to the public Monday August 6 and Tuesday August 7 from from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Wednesday August 8 from 9 a.m. to 3.00 p.m, time of the awards ceremony.

Judging is by ‘peer-group-review’, meaning competitors choose the winners, but obviously you can’t vote for their own bike(s), Each competitor is asked to select his 12 favorite bikes on a ‘whatever floats your boat’ basis, then place them in rank order one through twelve. Harley-Davidson is again sponsoring the Modified Harley-Davidson World Championship class. Wi-Fi permitting, as I did during the 2010 and 2011 editions, I may do a live broadcast of the awards ceremony on August 8 starting at 3 p.m. local time.

This will be the last World Championship to be staged in Sturgis before the event is moved to the Big Bike Europe Expo in Essen, Germany, which takes place May 10-12, 2013. The top three placed US builders in the Freestyle class will be invited to compete in Germany and will have expenses paid for bike freight, flights and hotel to the value of approximately $10,000 each. The list of confirmed competitors in Sturgis is below.

Great place not only to see the bikes, but the show lasting 2 days, an opportunity to spend time with the builders and also to meet with Cyril.

It’s actually open 4 days – Sunday August 5 through to Wednesday 8.

Still spaces left if anyone’s still thinking about entering!

Thanks very much Cyril for this post – much appreciated. See you there!

Some absolutely amazing engineering is seen at this show each year. Much of it is subtle and the best way to appreciate it is to talk with the builders who are only too happy to show off their designs. This literally is the Crème de la crème of custom bike building.
