Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials Set For August 23-28, 2014

bonneville1The six-day event during which motorcyclists compete for their place in history with national and world records will be held Aug. 23-28. “The Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials“, also known as the AMA Land Speed Grand Championships, is one of the most unique competition events that they sanction,” said AMA Track Racing Manager Ken Saillant. “Land-speed racing, and this event in particular, attracts an incredible diversity of motorcycles and racers. Every year the competition gets even more fierce, and we expect 2014 to be one of the most challenging ever.”

bonneville2Delvene Manning, owner of Deliciate Promotions LLC and the Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials and former daughter-in-law of long-time event promoter and AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer Denis Manning, said that she’s excited to take the reins of the event during an era of growing popularity of the sport. “Denis shepherded land-speed racing into a new era, drawing competitors from all corners of the country and all backgrounds to chase their place in the record books,” Delvene Manning said. “We have everyone from weekend warriors to fully backed factory teams at this event, and we’re looking forward to carrying on the grand tradition of AMA championship land-speed racing on the Bonneville Salt Flats.”

Expected this year on the Salts of Bonneville, the Castrol Rocket, a 1,000-horsepower motorcycle racing for the absolute land-speed record. Backed by Castrol and Triumph, it will be ridden by former Daytona 200 winner Jason DiSalvo. Detailed schedule, classes, entry forms and existing records can be found at Bonneville Speed Trials.

If history is any indicator, Contemporary “popularity” (of anything) usually means the destruction of that which once was only valued by a few (as in when country wasn’t cool).

As someone once said about Bonneville:
“… There are few places left and few men left unchanged, by modern society and their i-wants and i-needs. It is good to know there are still sacred places, where Man has and will continue to put himself to test, against the odds and Machine…”

On 26 August 1967, 68 year-old Burt Munro, riding a 47-year old Indian, set his last record.

Thanks SCTA for not turning the salt into another televised people-zoo.

Went to it when BUB was the sponsor – great experience. Hope the AMA doesn’t screw it up like it has with its roadracing program.
