Springfield Museums Celebrate Centennial of Van Buren Sisters’ Historic Cross-Country Motorcycle Ride. Kuryakyn Holdings, LLC and Mustang Motorcycle Products, LLC Bring Their Support. The Springfield Museums are honored to be the host location for this centennial ride launch event. n 1916 Adeline and Augusta Van Buren, New York socialites and descendants of U.S. President Martin Van Buren, rode their Springfield-manufactured Indian motorcycles from Brooklyn to San Francisco. With World War I looming, the sisters wanted to show that women had what it took to be dispatch riders in the U.S. Army. In honor of the centennial of the ride, Alisa L. Clickenger, of Diamond Bar, California, is planning the Sisters’ Centennial Motorcycle Ride; after a launch party in Brooklyn on July 3, the tour will come to Springfield on July 4 for a second launch event that will honor the heritage of the Indian motorcycles with which the Van Burens made history 100 years ago. As part of the events in Springfield, riders and the public will be able enjoy a special new exhibit created at the Lyman & Merrie Wood Museum of Springfield History in honor of the sisters. Then, the centennial motorcycle group ride will depart from Springfield to travel cross-country to San Francisco for a grand finale celebration
