Going To Sturgis But No Time To Ride There?

shippingYour therapy involve riding a motorcycle but riding to Sturgis back & forth require extra vacation days. And attending the August rally without riding is a frustrating experience. No shame in shipping your bike and no worry if you pick a great professional shipper involved all year long in transporting some of the most valuable custom bikes that typically require the most loading and transportation attention.

For example, exhibitors in the Sturgis Buffalo Chip “Motorcycles As Art” exhibit have placed their bikes in the hands of Milwaukee based Haul Bikes offering an enclosed, air ride suspension and soft-tie strapping system to ensure each bike in its care arrives safely. Shipping service includes $15,000 insurance coverage. A map of Haul Bikes eight shipping zones along with prices is displayed on their website

Some other world’s best builders place their creations in the care of A&S Kinard’s “Sturgis Express” as they travel from Philadelphia to the Buffalo Chip. The company reliably serves the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic and Midwest United States. The fully insured “Sturgis Express” will also deliver freight to the Buffalo Chip.

Unless they are broke my bikes get ridden to where I am going.

Trailer Queens ? Rather not go than feel the shame of not riding there

Oh those pesky extra vacation days to ride your motorcycle, what an inconvenience!

  3. 3 Hazy Jul 3rd, 2016 at 10:39 am

Yeah, it is an inconvenience. Sometimes also a matter of keeping your job, keeping the wife and family happy, and doing what you want with your own stuff. I get pretty sick and tired of the “real” bikers putting everyone down that doesn’t fit their narrow little profile of realness. I assume that even though I sometimes trailer, sometimes ride, I don’t fit that definition of the “real” biker, even though I’ve been riding since 1968, build all my own bikes, made my living as a bike mechanic, and proudly wore a 3 piece patch for 25 years, I’m not a real biker. Sorry, could care less what you think.

    RE:
“…No shame in shipping your bike…”

Well, that would depend (on why your “into motorcycling”)….
If all your after is a “personality accessory” shame is probably the last emotion on your mind.

On the other hand, if its “accomplishment” your after, by “shipping” you’ve missed the mark.
But then that certainly proves the point that “we are NOT all equal.”

Your On Point Hazy. Do “real” bikers even have computers to bash others on?

I have always ridden to all of my destinations. It is just what I do. If I can’t ride there and back, I don’t go. It is for the adventure. I wouldn’t miss all the breakdowns, weather, people, scenery, etc. That is why I ride.
I agree with nicker, and there is nothing wrong with what you do … and nothing wrong with what I do either.

p.s. my bike did come home from Laughlin one time in the chase truck … couldn’t get it to run ….

I’ve met guys that ship their bikes to sturgis. The only time they ride is at sturgis and to the ROT rally 150 miles from their house. Those are the only times they ride. I hate being around guys on a bike that don’t know what they’re doing. It’s like a rich guy buying a complex aircraft because they can afford it, they don’t stay proficient and crash as a result. If you want to miss out on the trip, ship your bike. Just keep your distance from me.

ive ridden to Sturgis from Maryland 3 times with a small group of guys and my fondest memories where from the roadtrip out there more than being there…to each, his own, but riding in an air conditioned truck or flying to a “motorcycle rally” just don’t feel right to me

Why does any reference to trailering a bike have to turn into an episode of Mean Girls? Everybody’s situation is different, and unless somebody is trying to put YOUR bike on their trailer, perhaps just be quite and ride? I’ve never trailered to a rally in around 45 years of riding but guess what-that time is coming. I broke 3 vertebrae in a 1974 wreck and it’s getting to the point where the 20 mile ride for a burger on my Fat Bob leaves more of an impression on my body than the trip from Chicago to Key West on my ’68 Commando did “back in the day”. There’s tons of other reasons to trailer, like what if you’re working the damn rally and would like to have a bike available? Maybe you’re going to show a bike and ride one? I met 4 guys from CT who took turns driving the crew cab pulling their bikes in an enclosed trailer and turned a 2-3 day ride into barely more than 24 hours, creating extra time for a ride deep into Wyoming during the rally week. To many, the ride IS the journey, but for others, the amazing riding around Sturgis is what they want to do. Why treat them like crap just because they don’t mirror YOUR lifestyle? That’s kind of acting like a cager in my opinion.

You said it, HAZY! I would give anything to ride my bike from CA to Sturgis and back, but I don’t get that much vacation time. Trailering myself makes no sense, since it would take just as long. If I could afford to have my bike shipped, and the plane ticket, that would be better than never going. Second choice, sure. Would I rather ride? Yep, the best part of the trip. I’ve actually been twice and had the time of my life. Current job, though, I could not get that much time off. Hell, at least there’s a way to make it happen. I know a few celebrity builders that have been riding to Sturgis for decades, but time restraints force them now to have their bikes shipped one-way home. Another alternative to missing out on the rally altogether.

I’m with Nicker on this one !!!
There are numerous reasons of why you’d trailer a bike to an event / ride !
Health, time constraints, etc, etc, ad infinatum …
And more power to you if any of those apply to you !
But the whole purpose of having a motorcycle,
is not like having an ornament on your Xmas tree or just to say you have one.
It is a machine to RIDE !!!
I’ve ridden to Sturgis twice (2008 & 2011) ridden to & from Ky.
So much bonding,so many stories, that we still tell to this day
The camaraderie & the trust that you build &
have to have in your fellow riders to attempt a cross country / long distance trip.
If you are able, can afford it & have the time to do it
You really, really should, ride !!!!
