Royal Enfield Unveiled Its New 650 cc Parallel Twin To Equip Two New Models

Royal Enfield has unveiled a new 650 cc parallel twin engine at the Royal Enfield UK Technical Center at Bruntingthorpe in United Kingdom. The 2 new models running on this engine are expected to be unveiled at the EICMA Show in Milan today 7 November.

It is clear that Royal Enfield, with a stronger engine, aimed at developing a global platform that would carry the Royal Enfield legacy and character into modern motorcycling history and seduce as much beginners than experienced riders. It could mean some new competition for our American brands also looking for new riders.

The new unit is a four-stroke, single overhead cam, air-cooled, 648cc parallel twin cylinder engine tuned to deliver torque across the rev range, allowing the new RE motorcycle to have a ride as smooth and stable as that of current generation, without having to shift too much even at low speeds. The new 648 cc displacement engine produces 47 bhp at 7,100 rpm and 52 Nm at 4,000 rpm, which is considerably higher than that delivered by the current 500cc engine at 27 bhp and 41 Nm. Royal Enfield says the twin cylinder configuration doesn’t have the thump that Enfield’s motorcycles are famous for. But Siddhartha Lal, MD & CEO said, “I wouldn’t call it a thump, but I would call it a rumble.” (photo @ @SwatiKJain)

It’s nice to see RE making twins again and a motorcycle manufacturer not seeing the need to make some oversized and overweight beast.

Following Triumph and Abarth lead, wouldn’t it be nice if the styling was based on their glorious Interceptor Mk2 ? 🙂

Very ice….could give us a reliable inexpensive 650…..might be a breathe of fresh air. Plus it clearly could get punched out to a 750 easily. No radiator either…….

Hopefully this will be similar to the ones in YouTube spy videos, which is a bit like the Continental GT.
I would love one with the common chrome tank, pea shooters and a tuning kit from Hitchcock’s, perhaps a pair of Amals.

My town bike is an Iron Barrel 500 Enfield and while it’s slow I love the utter simplicity, THUMP, and ease of maintenance. It also looks like a friggin motorcycle and not a Transformer!

As a Mark-I Interceptor owner one can only hope the did a better job on the oiling system design… 🙁
