Sturgis 75th. Being A Guest At The Black Hills Speedway.

dirttrack1dirttrack4dirttrack2dirttrack3I have never been big into motorcycle racing although I have watched quite a few races, at the Daytona Speedway. Last Wednesday, I was a guest of Black Hills Harley-Davidson® GM/Co-Owner and event promoter Terry Rymer at the Black Hills Half-Mile in Rapid City and jumped on the opportunity to learn more about dirt-track racing. This type of racing is uniquely American and the AMA Pro Flat Track series is one of the oldest motorsports championships in the nation.

2DrtTrK_Actn_00101DrtTrK_Actn_0006Greeted by retired racer and now commentator Chris Carr, a seven-time winner of the A.M.A. Grand National Championship and a motorcycle land speed world record holder, and invited to listen to its live international broadcast in the TV production booth, I learned a lot and got quite excited during the different heats and final (18 riders, 25 laps) Chris Carr and myself talked about the technical feasibility of getting the TV feed of his broadcast, giving you the option to watch live the races in my website a couple of times every year. Are you interested? Tell me in “comments” Continue reading ‘Sturgis 75th. Being A Guest At The Black Hills Speedway.’

Postcards From The 75th Sturgis Rally (Part 2)

0Sturgis54011Sturgis5405Sturgis540Sturgis stirs very unique feelings. Because of the beautiful riding in the Black Hills and in the Dakota plains. Because nobody has more friends than a biker, and of course the summer event is the perfect pretext to meet your extended biker family.

You ask all the time with who I hang with during the rallies I attend. So, this post is about a few of the industry friends with who I spent a few days of quality time during this landmark 75th Sturgis anniversary. 75th Sturgis. Cheating Death, Doug Danger Clears 22 Cars And Succeeds Where Evel Knievel And Others Failed

1Jump_A_00052Jump_Doug_0003August 6th at 5 p.m. at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip. The bravado but also the fear of a stuntman named Doug Danger convinced he can succeed where even Evel Knievel failed and others ended up severely injured. A world record attempt to make a crazy motorcycle jump to clear 22 cars on the same 1972 Harley-Davidson XR-750 Evel Knievel used. If at the time Knievel failed it’s because he could not reach the required speed of a minimum of 80 mph to clear the distance.

Front of about 6000 spectators biting their nails, at first approach, red, white and blue suited Doug Danger realized that his speedo indicated a speed under 80 mph. So he decided to increase his launch distance by about 100 yards, starting his jump among campers sipping beer on their lawn chairs… With all the odds against him and a light breeze blowing from the west Danger made his ride into history, clearing all 22 cars and landing safely although the force of impact on the bars created injury on his wrist and thumb. After the jump, he declared that if the money is right he is ready to attempt more crazy jumps above buses and tractor-trailers…

“These people saw one of the greatest jumps in the history of motorcycling today,” said Buffalo Chip President Rod Woodruff. “Thousands of people were holding their breath and the tension was unbelievably high when Doug flew off the end of that ramp, but he was successful and it was an incredible moment.” Continue reading ’75th Sturgis. Sturgis 75th. Perewitz Custom Paint Show.

ps00ps0A great paint job will not necessarily make a good custom, but a bad paint job will certainly break a good one. The objective of a competition like the Perewitz Paint Show is to reward those who invest a big chunk of money in the aesthetic appeal of their bike paint job and the artists who produce them.

The second edition (after the one of this past Daytona Bike week) of the Perewitz Paint Show was held Wednesday August 5th on the parking lot of the Easyriders Saloon on Lazelle street in Sturgis. About 75 bikes displayed the full range of paint artwork and techniques, from graphics to flames to murals to pearls and candy paint jobs.

All participants got a free Perewitz tee shirt and competed in 6 categories for “artwork trophies”, with the best of show receiving an exclusive Steve Soffa Limited Edition Sturgis 75th Anniversary watch.  (photos @ H. Roesler for C. Huze)

Ormond Beach City leaders To Decide If They Want To Annex Bruce Rossmeyer’s Destination Daytona. Ormond Beach City Commissioner Troy Kent said annexing Destination Daytona would increase tax revenues for the city by as much as $130,000 a year. By annexing Destination Daytona, Ormond Beach broadens its tax base, and according to Kent, homeowners stand to benefit from that annexation. The move to becoming part of Ormond Beach would provide Destination Daytona with city services, like law enforcement. “We are actually also going to create an additional police zone,” said Kent. “So, we’re going to hire five new officers to take care of that area.” Pepe said Ormond Beach police started providing patrols during this year’s Bike Week, in March, as a test run. The proposed annexation of Destination Daytona by Ormond Beach had its first reading Wednesday night. If approved, the annexation could go through at second reading later in August.

And If Tesla Was Creating An Electric Motorcycle…

Tesla1The car manufacturer doesn’t intend to build an electric motorcycle. But you never know about tomorrow or after tomorrow. An English independent designer named Jans Slapins created a virtual concept of what could be a Tesla electric motorcycle. Dubbed the model M (following Tesla moniker), he suggests that the vehicle could be driven by four computer-controlled modes, standard, cruise, eco and race. Lithium-ion batteries are installed as low as possible in an aluminum frame and what is usually the gas tank becomes a storage place for motorcycling gear. Range being an issue, Jans Taplin suggests that the wheels of the Model M could be made of carbon fiber to reduce weight. This would lead to the power-to-weight ratio of the Model M being particularly impressive. Rear suspension is via a mono-shock while the front uses upside down forks. (photos @ Jans Slapins)

75th Sturgis. 7th Annual Biker Belles Celebration. Happy 90TH Birthday Gloria.

bb1bb2Tuesday August 4th at the Lodge in Deadwood was another very special day for women who ride. The Biker Belles Celebration started by a lunch and educative seminar on safety by “A Crash Course for the Motorcyclist” author Vicki Roberts Sanfelipo. Then, there was a tribute to role model Gloria Tramontin Struck who celebrated her 90th birthday and her 74th year riding… Yes, she started in 1941 and never stopped doing long distance trips on the most challenging terrains both in North & South America and in Europe. With a great sense of humor and helped by pictures taken during her trips Gloria did a very entertaining and inspirational presentation of her life on 2 wheels. Her next big plan, a cross country trip when she will hit 100. From all of us in the motorcycle industry, Happy Birthday Gloria!

bb3After being pampered in the Comfort Zone by Team Diva, doing some fashion and riding gear shopping and participation in an auction, the Biker Belles did some riding in the hills, raising awareness of the passion, diversity and spirit of women in motorcycling. Created by the Buffalo Chip, the event is also an opportunity to raise funds for worthy local charities that are of particular interest to these riding women.

bb4bb5It is worth mentioning that all men and women, riders and non-riders, are welcome to join this gathering of mentorship and sharing. Participants are asked to make a small contribution to join the festivities, 100 percent of which directly benefit two South Dakota charities, the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame and Helping with Horsepower.

75th Sturgis Rally. Buffalo Chip Legends Ride Pays Off.

BuffaloChipIndian20152015-BuffaloChipHD2015Riders in the Sturgis Buffalo Chip®’s signature Legends Ride® cheered Monday as the two student-built Buffalo Chip Challenge bikes were sold at auction, raising a record amount in support of the annual charity event. The two bikes up for auction were a 2014 Indian Chieftan customized by a team under the direction of Keith Terry, John Shope and Chris Malo, and a 2014 Harley Davidson Road King customized by a team led by Randy and Nick Cramer and Paul Yaffe.

legends4Collectively the bikes brought winning bids of $120,000, with the Team Yaffe Harley going for $60,000 and the Team Shope Indian bringing in $61,000 all in support of the Legends Ride. The Legends Ride has traditionally supported local charities, Black Hills Special Olympics and the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum. In addition to donations to these two causes, ride donations for this year’s event will also help students interested in a career in the motorcycle industry by providing educational scholarships. After seven consecutive sell-out years, the ride has raised more than $375,000 for charity.

Buffalo Chip President Rod Woodruff and Black Hills Special Olympics President Jack Lynass, last year burned the note on a van purchased through Legends Ride donations. 2015 donations will be used toward another van used to transport Special Olympics athletes to events and training sessions.

legends5legends6“The Legends Ride is one of the most popular annual Buffalo Chip events and not only gives riders a chance to meet some of the biggest celebrities at the rally, but more importantly supports some incredibly worthy local charities,” said Rod Woodruff, Sturgis Buffalo Chip CEO. “We are most excited about the opportunity this year to encourage students to pursue a career in the motorcycle industry. Everyone who has taken part and paid the rider fee helped to fulfill the dreams of students and special athletes.”

Some of the biggest names in television, film, music and motorcycling joined hundreds of riders from around the globe for the annual ride through the scenic Northern Black Hills that raises money for the local charities. Hundreds of Legends Riders gathered on Deadwood’s Main Street this afternoon to take part in the auction and socialize with these celebrities.

Swiss Made Aluminum Pegs By Hard 9 Choppers

1-H9FullSizeRenderMachined in Switzerland out of EN/6028 aluminium , this pegs weight only 0,2477 lbs (111 grams), coincidently the same weight as a (swiss) chocolate bar, but 5000 times stronger with a static load of 1102.295lbs (500kg)

2-H9FullSizeRender3-H9FullSizeRenderDanny from Hard 9 Choppers explains: “I was riding motocross and freestyle motocross for 20 years. The moto cross pegs are small to control the brake and shifter. The freestyle motocross pegs are wider for a proper landing and to minimize the risk of breaking an ankle. The harley industry adopted wide the wide version because they look cool but as a matter of fact they make shifting and braking more difficult. In addition they are very heavy, made of steel or cast aluminum.”

These high end pegs cost twice more to produce than the steel or cast versions. So, price is still to be announced. But it will be Swiss quality. At Hard 9 Choppers.

Joke Of The week

cyril-huze-joke44 - Copy“It is a slow day in a little Greek Village. The rain is beating down and the streets are deserted. Times are tough, everybody is in debt and everybody lives on credit.

On this particular day a rich German tourist is driving through the village, stops at the local hotel and lays a €100 note on the desk, telling the hotel owner he wants to inspect the rooms upstairs in order to pick one to spend the night. The owner gives him some keys and as soon as the visitor has walked upstairs, the hotelier grabs the €100 note and runs next door to pay his debt to the butcher.

The butcher takes the €100 note and runs down the street to repay his debt to the pig farmer. The pig farmer takes the €100 note and heads off to pay his bill at the supplier of feed and fuel.

The guy at the Farmers’ Co-op takes the €100 note and runs to pay his drinks bill at the taverna. The tavern owner slips the money along to the local prostitute drinking at the bar, who has also been facing hard times and has had to offer him “services” on credit. The hooker then rushes to the hotel and pays off her room bill to the hotel owner with the €100 note. Continue reading ‘Joke Of The week’

Harley-Davidson Opens Harley-Davidson Rally Point And Kicks-Off The 75th Annual Sturgis Rally.

rp2Choosing steel and torches over ribbons, Harley-Davidson ignited its presence for the grand opening of the Harley-Davidson Rally Point and the official kick-off to the 75th Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. Today July 31, 2015 marks the first of a 75-year partnership between Harley-Davidson and the city of Sturgis as the rally’s official motorcycle. The event was sparked by a chain-cutting with Bill Davidson, Great Grandson of Company Co-Founder and VP of the H-D Museum, members of the Davidson family, and Sturgis Mayor Mark Carstensen.
RP1A mecca for riders that provides a new permanent home to celebrate the freedom, independence and rebellion found in riders around the world, the Rally Point will serve as a central spot for all riders during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, and a gathering point for the citizens of Sturgis throughout the year.

Upcoming 75th Sturgis Rally. Five Things People Are Talking About.

sturgisrally1- How Many Will Be In And Around The Black Hills? 1 Million As Announced?

Most say that 1 million people are expected to converge on western South Dakota. Why is it that some anniversaries ending in 0 andr 5, like this year’s 75th Sturgis Rally edition, are perceived as being more important than other “normal” rallies? For sure the 75th is probably going to be the most epic of all other motorcycle rallies in history. The average age of the American V-twin biker being around 50+, many baby boomers want to enjoy this edition because they guess they will not be strong enough to participate to the 90th, 95th or 100th… During the rally, everybody from vendors to visitors is going to try to estimate the number of attendees. And when the rally ends we will get conflicting statements regarding this number, and of course nobody will ever know for sure… Factually we just know that the coefficient of occupation in hotels and campgrounds is at an absolute record high. A climbing consumer comfort, at least in the US, will help inflate the number of participants. Slight disappointment may come from foreign visitors penalized by a much stronger US dollar versus most major currencies. It’s especially true for Europeans for who a trip to South Dakota costs about 20% more than last year.

SturgisRallyLogoxsm2- Security And Traffic.

This 75th rally – officially August 3 – 9, but starting sooner and lasting longer -requires extra preparation from all parties involved. How will it feel for those living and working locally and for those working the rally? What about those traveling  to ride the Black Hills and around, about those wanting to attend as many events and concerts as possible?. State and local law enforcement, tourism officials and health professionals have been preparing during the last 2 years with staging exercises to prepare for the extraordinary. It goes from a terrorism act to Black Hills fires, from evacuation of the injured to traffic patterns and gridlock evasive roads. Transportation officials have taken such measures as the extension of the westbound lane off-ramp at Interstate 90 Exit 30 in Sturgis, the placement of automated and manned traffic signals throughout the hills and more than 30 remote-controlled message boards along major routes. A rally command center, including a Department of Transportation traffic monitoring operation, has been installed at Camp Rapid in Rapid City. Ambulances and law enforcement officers will be available from Nebraska and North Dakota through emergency agreements. Extra National Guard Blackhawk helicopters will be available if needed for medical evacuations. We all know that South Dakota is famous for its summer hail storms, but plans are in place to quickly clear Main Street in Sturgis and warn area campgrounds in case of approaching bad weather.… In 74 years, there was no major emergency event in Sturgis requiring the governor to declare an emergency. So, stop worrying about the traffic, of potential unpredictable events and just enjoy each minute of your stay in South Dakota. Continue reading ‘Upcoming 75th Sturgis Rally.
