Erik Buell Filed Patent For Motorcycle With Hybrid Power System

Buell1Think whatever you want about hybrid and e-bikes, but they are coming in larger numbers. Even Erik Buell is working on them and with 6 others, filed for a patent regarding a motorcycle with hybrid power system. The application describes a motorcycle “with an internal combustion engine, a generator, and a rechargeable battery configured to be recharged by the internal combustion engine or generator, an electric motor electrically connected to the rechargeable battery and configured to drive at least one of a plurality of wheels of the vehicle, and an electronic controller configured to start the internal combustion engine based upon a monitored condition of the rechargeable battery.”

The claimed motorcycle features an electric motor and internal combustion stacked below the seat of the motorcycle with the internal combustion engine positioned above the electric motor. The fuel tank is described as integrated into the frame such that the frame houses the fuel for the internal combustion engine. The frame comprises at least one tubular portion housing a fuel line extending from the fuel tank through the at least one tubular portion to the engine. (sourced by reader Jeff Nicklus)

Yep. like it or not, hybrid and e-motorcycles will be the next generation 2-wheelers. It may inspire new creativity. Technology will advance and then it’s up to people like Buell to create good looking motorcycles

I think that Erik Buell, with all the financial backup he has behind him, may soon surprise quite a lot of people. The man is intelligent and knows in which direction to go to be successful.

Can these actually be successful without government subsidies? The current hybrid and cars like the Prius come with hefty subsidies and discounts, otherwise NO ONE would buy them. I’m all for new technology but the market needs to decide what it wants, not paid off government workers who get under the table checks from big envirnomental groups who make all their money off scamming the government.

Having test rode a Zero I can definitely see the promise of e-bikes. Instant on torque of an electric motor is a pure joy to ride. So can these be successful without gov subsidies? I think so, eventually anyway. Show me the performance of an electric motor with an onboard fueled generator ala Chevy Volt for unlimited range…if EB can get this tech into a light enough, rideable platform…I’m interested.
